The people who pay to register and maintain domain names. Be that individuals, companies, value added resellers,

Do you think that there may be 'bigger' money behind it at all? Can just those who pay to register etc. provide enough funds to finance it all?

A trawl through the 2010 accounts shows an income of about £20m from domain name registrations and subscription fees - presumably the annual fee a domain name holder pays to keep his '.co.uk' address.

Nominet is a not-for-profit company and distributions to members are banned.

They have an investment portfolio valued at about £27m - they spent £5m adding to it 2010.

The portfolio gave them another £400,000 income.

They also paid £5m in 2010 to the Nominet Trust - their own charity.

Thanks Iffy. Much appreciated.

I would imagine the overheads are pretty low, the sort of company one could run from Humph's shed...

Spot on - they have more money coming in than they can shake a stick at and very low expenses.

Hence they have £5m spare to spend on the investment portfolio, and another £5m to give to charity.

I do some work for a similar organisation, despite their best efforts they've been running a surplus for the last couple of years which proves a little difficult to manage. Reminds me I'll have to put my mileage claims in !

I'm going to google Nominet now - probably based in a glass palace somewhere !

Their address is a science park in Oxford.

Not the cheapest real estate, but not the dearest, either.

More to it than meets the eye, specially in the field of claim jumping and naming disputes! Its a responsible business, the right name is worth millions of squids to the right people.

I am curious why martin is curious tho....

The occasional letter I get from them when a domain name is due to expire and promising a renewal for "just" £49 seems to stretch the definition of not-for-profit a bit.

The phrase is often used to describe this type of business, but doesn't mean literally what it says.

The company does run at a profit, but those profits cannot be distributed to shareholders.

Strictly, there aren't shareholders, just members.

The profits are accounted for - hence charitable donations and money spent on an investment portfolio.
