Apocalypse indeed! How can people call a bit of urban disorder an 'apocalypse'?
A few street sweepers will have that cleared up in no time.

Thats just the Saturday night lull between the binge drinkers and the street sweepers.

cant be his, it doesn't have that slightly wrong shade of red front wing.

Seen this in the Evening News website. I know all the buildings in it very well so it is rather spooky but what is more spooky is I have seen this sort of thing after the IRA bomb in 1996.
The pictures a bit too close to home for me.
Very cleverly done though.

Well after United and City exiting Europe last night ...

Can the rest of England exit Europe, too?

What is special about these pictures, it just confirms us southerners view of the north! :)

I think most people in Manchester were secretly quite pleased. Place is much nicer after it was rebuilt!

I doubt if the many improvements that happened after the IRA bomb would have come about so quickly. Getting rid of the old M&S and Shambles Square shopping area and opening it all up was a huge improvement.
So I might not have been pleased with an IRA bomb going off, but appreciate what happened to the city centre subsequently.

It was all due for redevelopment anyway but I think the bomb just bought if forward a good five years. If the bomb hadn't have gone off, there is no way the old mess would still exist now, it still have have flattened just not as quickly.
The vast majority of the construction work in the city centre over the past 15 years has not been bomb related.

I was there the day Woolies went on fire....

Are you allowed matches now, or do you still go for electro therapy?

My best pal's dad was an administrator of such things....a charge nurse maybe ?

I walked past the Hacienda this afternoon...damn cold and wet it was too ! I didn't look up but I'm grateful nothing fell off.
The city's much better since the bomb...I heard it go off, I was at home 3 miles away. Got a phone call to drive in and rescue SWM and 2 mates. I was fortunate in having the knowledge of some of the little side streets.....they hadn't been cordoned off. Huge plume of smoke could be seen as I went in.
The car they had gone in was trapped under M&S in the car park for a long time....not ours !
SWM was in a good place when it exploded...on the escalator at Kendal Milne's store...no windows to explode !

I was at home playing Simcity 2000 on my 486 SX2 50 (that is how clearly I remember it) and my mum received a phone call from my farther. He said a massive bomb has gone of in the city. My dad was on some sort of duty at the time which meant it was his job to warn all the council departments of any disaster.
We put the news on and nothing, it wasn't on any news or teletext until 10 minutes after my dad made the call.
I remember my dad drove into the town with us the week later, parked up in Ancoats and as we walked down alarms were still ringing from the cordoned off streets. Very few people lived in the city centre then but if it was to happen again 1000s could be made homeless.

There wasn't a car park under the old M&S.
I was due to help load up a van for work on the Sunday in the loading area of the Arndale. I'd unloaded a load of kit there a few days earlier at our office that used to be in the tower. Thank goodness it didn't all happen on the Sunday - being selfish. I'd have either been in the basement area of the Arndale or in the tower. The tower took a massive blast at the level I would have been at. And then travelled up the tower through the open lift and upwards to make a mess of the top floors. Glad I don't work in there anymore!

Perhaps the worst thing about the bomb is the tiles on the tower survived.
|
The entrance was on Cateaton Street...opposite the Mitre Hotel, Rob.

Thanks Ted. I didn't realise (or at least remember) there was an underground car park. I did know the loading bay under the Arndale is huge! You can get a few articulated lorries down there. And security back then was not great.
As for Rattle saying: "Perhaps the worst thing about the bomb is the tiles on the tower survived." The tiles used to fall off and they were all stuck back on with better adhesive. It took a lot of time. But it clearly worked well.

There certainly was a car park below Marks and Spencers - with a shopping collection point.
