A very bitter-sweet week for sport in Wales. - R.P.
The loss of Gray Speed has struck a nation very hard, couldn't help thinking of it when reading the comments in the suicide comments here over the last couple of days. I am no football fan and don't pretend to understand the finer points of the game - and I largely despise the participants, clearly GS was something special.

As if to add to the emotional roller coaster - Wales rugby team played their 17th game of 2011 yesterday with Australia, the young team lost 18-24 - but apart from that it was a poignant last game for Shane Williams - he scored a magical try in the final minute of the game. I think the whole nation wept with him...

Good post R.P. - GS seemed to be one of the good guys of football.
Shane Williams was also a special player - and there have been a lot of Welsh players who have that special something - and I go back to Gareth Edwards and Barry John, Phil Bennett etc.
Much as I hate the Welsh when England are playing them, one can't help but admire some of them because they are damned good!
Also went on a rugby tour to South Wales once - played Ebbw Vale first game and got stuffed (all international front row - hard as nails) Next day played Ebbw Vale steel works thinking it would be easier - exactly same team!! Got stuffed again. I was concussed in game and only remember sitting on sidelines in a daze and being given a pint of Brains -"That'll wake you up boyo!"
Hospitality was fantastic - food, beer non-stop for all Easter weekend - brilliant!
No trace of Ebbw Vale steelworks these days - great pity.

PS
If you want to see a right good game of rugby, watch Highlights on ITV 4 at 8 pm - Leicester Tigers v Northampton Saints - a real cracker!
