I have a roll of clear acrylic sheeting that i intend to use for replacing some curved panes in a greenhouse i`ve been given. One thickness of the sheet is not enough, so am thinking of glueing it double thickness.
Adhesive recommendations please, there will be 8 x 2ft x2ft panels, so Tubes of stuff are probably out, how about Solvite wallpaper paste or clear silicon sealant?
To replace the panels from the manufacturer costs almost £40 per pk of 4! - so £80 on an old greenhouse is a no-go!
cheers folks!

Whenever I have used so called clear sealant it's gone brown and dirty looking in months.

To be honest im not too bothered if the said panels aren`t transparent, theres enough light getting in anyway. The main thing is to keep the wind out.
I`m also thinking of a visit to the local "Scrappy" to see if he has any old Aluminium sheeting (caravan skin?) that may do.

How about joining the sheets with non-rusting set screws and nuts?
Soft washers will waterproof the joints.

You can buy clear waterproof tape for repairing glass cracks.. Binds the ends together with it.

Adhesive for acrylic will render it opaque but it sounds like you don't mind. An alternative would be to use something sonic (not a screwdriver!) to make the two parts fuse. Acrylic adhesive might be an option.

cheers for the ideas so far, in the past i`ve tried taping two bits together, but they then fill up with condensation, go green and stink! so it has to be a "full surface" coating, hence my thought of wallpaper paste, cheap and easy to apply, cood coverage from a mix.

Acrylic adhesive and tape until it bonds.

Sorry to pour cold water over your wallpaper paste idea....but....it's water soluble. As soon as the damp gets between the panes, as it surely will, you'll end up with a mouldy mush.
I think you're looking at some spirit based adhesive which won't be cheap.

Ah! how logical re wallpaper paste! - me never thought of that! ;-) cheers!
£80 to restore an old greenhouse might not seem much compared to the price of a new one,but when given for nothing it goes against the grain! ;-( (probably was the reason i was given it!) anyway I was playin in the shed today. and i had an idea to bond a sheet of the Acrylic to a same-sizes piece of that small-mesh wire netting with silicone sealant. The result looks very promising, both rigid, bendable (to the required curvature) and still transparent! Tis now fitted on a weeks weather trial until i get time to make the rest.

You can bond acrylic with acrylic cement. But the join will go opaque. Not sure it would be strong enough.
|
So how much is a similar greenhouse new? £80 to restore something you got for nothing might be a good deal. Don't think your acrylic sheet is going to work. Will never have the necessary rigidity.

Would just like to report back that the Chicken wire bonded to the Acrylic sheeting with Silicone sealant was a great success! Finished re-glazing the 8 panels last Thursday.
When I went down the allotment today, Me found that a piece of my nieboughs shed roof (4x3ft asbestos sheet) had blown off in last nights gale, and dropped right through the roof of my greenhouse! ;-(
Result, 2 bent spars and 18 smashed panes of glass! - back to the Acrylic then!!!! ;-(
