 Samsung Galaxy S MK1 - can't recieve calls or SMS - RattleandSmoke
This has been happening for a week or so, it works ok then all the sudden I get friends messaging me on Facebook saying they have been trying to call me all day. My phone has a full signal and appears to work normally.

I then restart it, but it can take several attempts to restart and it can take more than 20 minutes to boot up.

Facebook is very slow on it too, and it never used to be.

Hardly any startup apps etc so I doubt it is a software isssue.

Any ideas?

Try using a different phone for few days [using same SIM]. If same problem, then try a different network's SIM first.

At least then you can isolate whether it is a phone or network related issue.

Well something is seriously screwed then....

I'd restore to factory settings, if it's still taking 20 minutes to boot after that then I reckon a HW fault.

Can you reset it to factory defaults ?

Can do a reset but can't find a USB cable with the right connection, I know I probably have about 500 some where as I need to backup some files on it.

I do have a bluetooth stick I can use though.

Does it use an external memory card? If yes, try restarting the phone without that memory card (i.e. using internal memory only). Many smartphones corrupt memory cards and then take ages to restart.

Sadly not, I just the use the built in one. Not sure how a faulty SSD (in this case) would cause the issue of the phone not functioning correctly though, but I do see how it can cause issues with startup.

It is just out of warranty too :(

Take it out and try it without Rats.

Sorry, didn't make it clear, it doesn't have a memory card, it has 16GB built in which is soldered into the board. The SD slot is empty.

Also trying to back up my files but Kies will not connect to it :( Possibly all part of the same fault.

I doubt its a hardware issue, if it were it wouldnt be a long startup, it would fail to start up.

Factory reset will cure it.

Finally managed to get it to connect, so I will back it up and just do the reset :).

Rattle, connect it to the computer with the USB connection set to mass storage. Then the inbuilt memory card will show up as a USB drive on the PC. Then copy off the files.

I wouldn't try doing a full backup - it's not working and so the suggestion is try a factory reset. You'll need to reinstall apps etc.

Personally make sure that anything on the phone is also on a computer, i.e. master copy is not the phone version. Not possible with the limited number of photos I might take on the phone - although that too could be copied to the Internet automatically. Otherwise if you lost your phone you'd lose files.

The files are mostly music I have on my PC anway but I have a recording of my late grand farther which I really need to keep (although my sister also has a copy).

I do have some photos but again they are just mostly crap so not the end of the world.

It is the contacts I need to save so doing that now.

The firmware is also out of date, so when I reset it I will make sure it has the latest firmware.

Let us know how you get on.

Done the reset, booted up in a minute so hopefully the problem has gone, but won't know until a few days as resetting things can just mask hardware faults such as a faulty SSD or RAM.

Got gingerbread on it now :) Didn't even know you could get that on the Galaxy S. Also as I did a hard reset by typing in *2767*3855# it has got rid of all the Vodaphone crap it came with.

Feels so much smoother. I think the problem was I just lost interest in it, it was just a tool and that meant I hadn't been bothering with firmware upgrades etc.

Gingerbread has been out for ages on the Galaxy S.

Are they not syncing with Google all the time? I sync contacts with Gmail. And the Mac syncs with Gmail. So I have up to date contacts on the Mac, phone and online.

Still not getting calls. It boots up fine now, but I have to reboot and then txts come in.

Phoned up India and they said to take it into the nearest store, they will check the SIM card and if that is at fault they will replace it, if it is a hardware fault they will fix it free of charge, so hopefully its all be well.

They did try fobbing me off with

"I will disable your voicemail and can you please go into settings.... and change it to 2G" I pointed out it is a smart phone and this is not fit for purpose in 2gb mode.

Problem is now the local store in Stretford has now closed, the one in town means a tram of paying for parking, so I will have to go to the flipping Trafford Centre this evening which I am not too happy about.

4S on sale in the Trafford Centre. You could test drive one:)

With the £300 repair bill on my dent coming next week, I cannot even think of getting a new phone, and I have my Blackberry for business purposes.

I only got the Galaxy because they gave me an offer I couldn't refuse (£20 a month, 500 minutes, 1gb data, 18 months) when the phone first came out.

Understood! Sounds like a good deal you got.

Rattle have you not thought that putting the phone into GSM mode and doing some testing rules some things out. Were they suggesting this as a permanent solution or a test?

Went into the shop, they showed me a hand written list of about 150 people, all with the first few digits as my number all with the same problem. They are not sure what the problem is but will report it to Vodaphone.

I am not sure I am happy with this, why are they delaying reporting it? If it is not fixed by the end of this week that will be over two weeks without a reliable phone so I may ask for some refund on this months payment.

Do I detect you've been having a bad day? I said first few digits, not first two.

few has no defined quantity, but in the case of mobile phones there are probably several million people with the same "few" starting numbers.
 Samsung Galaxy S MK1 - can't recieve calls or SMS - RattleandSmoke
I didn't see the numbers, but lets just say the person in the shop instantly knew what I was going to say, and there has been lots of people complaining about this over the weekend, all the numbers of the same pattern to them.
