Congratulations advert. How to Zap it ? - henry k
I am being bombarded with this congratulation advert.
I do not want to win an Iphone.
How do I get rid of it ?

Thanks

Me too henry.

What with that one, and the garish flashing ones that appear at the top bottom and side of the screen when I get up early, it's enough to make you not bother at all at the moment.

I'm getting sick of them too and I know I can tweak settings or change browsers to eliminate them, BUT I don't have to do that on any other site and am happy to accept a few discreet ones to help the site a long, so why is it OTT on here?

ditto the above......exceptionally irritating........and some of us don't know how to fiddle with settings and/or don't want to be bothered with that even if we did.

I can live with the adverts but it these clever types who set up adverts that will not accept NO ( go away, F.O ) or any other input are the ones that bug me.
I opened up another window to get away from it.
At last it has given up and died.

What's all the fuss about? Ignore it. I didn't bother to press either of its go away buttons. I knew they wouldn't work and it would just encourage the thing.

Agreed AC, the few sites i visit where advert type things appear the close button just opens it anyway.

Have those pestered overmuch by the things cleared their cookies recently, or run CC cleaner recently, damned nuisance having to re-enter all the passwords but does cut the carp for me for a while.
Congratulations advert. How to Zap it ? - Pat
If you do the settings on CC Cleaner you don't have to re-enter your passwords and yes I do it regularly:)

It's the brightly coloured, flashing Ads I object to, very distracting when you're trying to read posts in the middle of them.

AdBlock Plus on Firefox seems to block most things, although one persistent blighter (pop-up the right term?) got through on a Boxer dog site: "quizbeginlive" Had to restart to get shot.

Oh yes, many thanks N.

Just downloaded and restarted and all ads have gone, from every site i regularly visit....as a bonus the pages load in milliseconds now, joy, virtual pint i owe you N.

Sorry to hear there was a rubbish ad.

As you are all aware the ads here are served by google, so we get whatever they deem appropriate. If there is a poor ad then there is near zero chance of getting them to pull it unless one of you has their phone number or contact email that is answered by a real person.

Ads also help pay for this site, so if you all decide simply to block them, we might as well pack up and go. Simple as that.

Suggestions?

Yep! I was thinking the same thing earlier, just a necessary evil really, they don't do me any arm.

If you click on the little triangle on a Google Adsense advert you can get to a page that manages your preferences. You can turn some things off. It had guessed my demographic wrong but I turned that off totally.

I still gets ads but they are more focussed (and less annoying). Just a thought.

Is there any mechanism that allows site owners to tell google's advertisers that they're not helping themselves?

There was one earlier today offering cheap vans - cancelled fleet order according to the spiel.

Now if I need a van that's great. But if I've no possible use for one then making the ad flash in massive text in two not quite synchronised bits of my screen ain't going to do anything but send me for a respite in cyclechat.

And even if I must have a van tomorrow the text changed too quickly for my fifty year old eyes/brain to absorb it.

I must be quite a tolerant person. Pop up ads don't bother me, brake lights don't bother me, nor DRls or indeed Xenons. Cyclists are fine by me as are motorcyclists. Truck drivers are just dandy too (except the ones who elephant overtake and who obviously should be tortured before execution and having their heads displayed on spikes on motorway bridges as a warning to the others.) Tailgaters could just be shot, preferably by a rear facing machine gun attached to my car.

With the above obvious and I think perfectly reasonable exceptions I urge calm and acceptance of the needs of others.

But people who only own one pair of shoes send you into apoplexy!

I could suggest something that stops all Google ads for here. And would bring about the demise of the site quicker than an ad blocker.

Either we live with the ads or all move on and leave Stephen and co do something else. They are happy with us using spare server and network capacity at present. With some revenue from Google ads.

Are you saying 'they' can see how many on a site block ads?

>> Are you saying 'they' can see how many on a site block ads?

No. But if the regulars (and others) don't display ads then there is no income (albeit small anyway) for Khoo Systems. And the forum would close. I doubt the ads cover the cost of power, cooling and Internet connectivity. Although, with a virtualised environment most of that will already exist and the site uses a percentage of it.

Sorry, I'm not into the higher echelons of computers, but I don't think you've answered my question.

Let's take a hypothetical case. If everyone on this site used some sort of advert blocker are you saying Khoo systems would receive no payment?
Congratulations advert. How to Zap it ? - car4play
We can't see how any of you block ads. And yes if everyone did block them we would get no revenue from the ads.

Against this note that the majority of unique impressions come from people landing here as a result of search. So a few blocking here in reality won't make a huge difference. In fact we used to give the mods an ad free connection to make their life easier. However, I suppose I am just appealing to the principle of everyone kind of doing their bit to help make it all work.

You have got me thinking that it probably is possible to create a script that notices that ads have been blocked and politely notify the user not to do this. I guess this could be taken further to stop bits of the site working if ads are blocked, but to be honest once one goes down this whole line it really is going against the spirit of things and would hack me off as an end user to feel that my browsing was being that controlled.
Congratulations advert. How to Zap it ? - henry k
In general I can live with adverts and am not on a path to block them.
I just got hacked off with the one advert that IMO was intrusive and self defeating.
I have not complained before, here or in the other place as it is often referred to.
Thanks for all the replies and comments.

If everyone blocked the ads... then yes to payment to Khoo Systems. If they remain as in page ads and not pop outs (or pop unders) then I am happy. If they became intrusive then I wouldn't be. Current page as I type this is missing an ad from the top and right... no ad blockers in force.

Two thoughts.
1) Those of us who hate ads., but love car4play should turn off our adblockers for at least one day per week and spend a few moments clicking through to earn C4P some referral credits. (I've just done this today)
2) Quite a few sites I visit which offer free "things" whether it be software, or access to fora or torrent search engines, have a "donate" button, usually via Paypal. You see this quite often on independent Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird add-on authors' sites.

Certainly one torrent search site I visit occasionally "knows" if I have an adblocker, as it has a modest note to that end, saying "that's fine: it's your choice, but how about a small donation?".

Does the site only get revenue when a ad is clicked?

Just wondering if there's any difference between:

1. blocking ads
2. not blocking ads but not clicking on them

from a site revenue point of view.

There is no formula in Google's payment for ad impressions or click throughs. Other advertisers will pay you on a known basis, but with Google you just have to accept what they give you.

I might be wrong, but with other advertisers they trial say 30K impressions (views) and monitor the click through and conversion rates. Then knowing how much they are prepared to pay for a click through/conversion they then serve ads based on number of impressions.
If you block ads an impression isn't counted. If you don't block them but don't click on them, then the click through rate goes down (but very fractionally).
The whole point though of targeted ads is that they should be useful to casual users of the site and so visitors will want to click on them anyway. So, for example, if one needs car insurance and that is the topic being discussed, and a load of ads appear offering a great deal on it, then fair play - visit that link.

Hi Roger

Although I appreciate the kindness of earning us some dosh from clickthroughs, if Google thought we were encouraging anyone to do this or supporting that kind of action, our account would be banned by them from infringement of their terms.

... and once you are banned, you are banned for life; there is practically no come back, no-one to remonstrate with, no discussion; basically nothing one can do about it. Furthermore they are likely to ban any other account set up to host ads to the same site.

Of course the big failing in all this is that if a competitor hated us they could simply click away like mad every day on our ads and get us banned.

A similar sort of thing goes on in Adwords (the pay end of Adsence which advertisers like us use). You pay for x click-throughs per month with Adwords and a competitor can simply click away on your ads so that you run out of that month's credit and so your ads no longer get shown. Ta da, competitor's ads eliminated!

I am sure Google have routines to try to spot this kind of thing, but I know of people who have had their accounts banned for click throughs even though they understand the rules and have put procedures in place to make sure, for example, ads never get shown in their own office.

I don't get any ads, never have. I haven't altered any settings. It must just be automatic for Firefox.

The only ones i get with F/Fox are the ones in the top and bottom banners, and the one under the log-in / search box, are there anymore?
Congratulations advert. How to Zap it ? - rtj70
Devonite, they are the ads being discussed. Not too intrusive IMO. And the page loads before the ads so they do not slow things down too much. At least there are no pop-ups (easily blocked) and more annoying pop-unders (like HJ site uses).

For the purpose of shriving myself, I have zapped the zapper pro tem for this site. Ad Block allows some flexibility. It's not been too bad, I have to say, with just a couple on the page.
