Got a couple of items of clothing that have zipper problems. The zip itself is ok, just the 'engagement mechanism' that either lets one piece go through to far, or is not engageing the zip teeth properly.
Any possible solutions, apart from trying to source replacements and someone handy to do the sewing work? I remember seeing something a while ago that repaired the engagement part, but can't seem to find anything now. I know there's a good contingent of tight wads here (including me) that wouldn't dream of throwing away perfectly good clothes, but also don't have the wherewithall to replace the whole zip themselves.

The slider opens up a bit. Both the slots gets too wide, and the two bits that force the zip together widen.
The slot you can usually persuade to close up a bit with a pair of pliers, and this usually puts the "forcer together" shoes back into place.

Excellent Z - and absolutely correct.
In which part of your diverse career did you pick up that one? ;-)

Buy new clothes. Retailers are starving out there !

And lube all zips with a wax candle.

Can do, but a soft pencil works better. Doesn't gunge up the zip see?

2B or not 2B. That is the question.

You seem to be Lead-ing the way in this debate

My stylish cardy has buttons - 100 per cent reliable and much lower maintenance.
|
which way do you "squash" the slider? top/bottom or side/side?
This could save me a fortune!!! i`ve drawers full of broken-zip jeans ;-)
|
Top/bottom, but it won't stand much messing with.
I overdid one, prised it open a little, and it snapped.

Throw them away and get yourself some chinos. Much more comfortable and as cheap as chips.

Yuck..........................nothing like a Church's Brogue!!

It's nothing like a shoe to be accurate. It looks like something designed by someone who has been told what shoes are but who has never actually seen any.

Do remember to take the trousers off first, or you could get something worse than Humph's headache.
|
right! 18 pairs found -
7 mended ;-)
5 pairs broke beyond repair ;-(
and 6 pairs no-different! ;-/
Dont know why my zips keep poppin tho` ................maybe they`re just carp! ;-0
|
Only thing to beware of is that a zip, once broken and subsequently repaired, will almost certainly fail again. This will not happen while in the privacy of your home. It will happen when it is least convenient.

We didn't have all this hassle with buttons...
|
Well I tried Zero's trick, and it worked on one item, and half worked on the other. The half working one is one of those zips that can also be unzipped upwards. It's my favourite hunting coat, so may get me through the winter if I'm careful.

Just use the buttons. My lightweight summer camo jacket has a knackered zip, but I get by.
