 Replacement Boiler - Robin O'Reliant
I'm thinking of replacing the boiler on my central heating system. At present we have a back boiler which has been in place since the house was built in 1989, so it's quite old and probably less than efficient. I want to fit a new one oi the garage, which backs onto the wall directly behind where the boiler is now, so there won't be any major re-siting involved. We are all gas, no immersion tank or any electric heating at all

I know nothing about the things, any idea of what type I should look at and possible costs (3 grand is my budget but I'd obviously like cheaper). Any idea of what I'm looking at and whether it is better to go British Gas or a small local if I can get a recommendation for a good one?

Our estate runs from a communal Calor Gas tank, unfortunately there is no mains gas supply. The radiators and pipe work look in sound condition.

You can get condensing versions of back boilers now. They're being made again. Would be much easier. www.baxi.co.uk/products/back-boilers.htm

I'd also consider whether it is worth the extra efficiency (probably not that much) vs installation cost + the inconvenience of having the boiler stop working when it gets really cold if the drain pipe isn't properly lagged and draining somewhere it won't freeze.

British Gas will charge you double what a decent local person will charge. I'd get quotes from a couple of approved fitters taken from the manufacturer's website.

This link will get you 5 local quotes

Worcester Bosch get mixed reviews but have a 5 year warranty, and £400 off if BG fit it. Most people think BG are overpriced ISTR

Whoever you decide on, it might be worthwhile to check out whether they have been trained in the make/type of boiler, and, crucially, its control system. We used a local, and foolishly thought he was competent. I ended up setting and resetting the controls (remote external thermometer, house thermostat timer/function selector and the boiler link) as the installer and his electrical "expert" had not a clue. RTFM? It was a poor translation from German. Not even the makers agents seem to understand the operation fully. Vaillant - huh!
