Half price at Morrisons, had them before and they are superb unlike some other supermarket butcher stuff, we bought 3 large ones....one is in the oven as we speak and SWM does a nice bit of crackling..:-)
Just had a hot mince pie (on offer too) to keep me from fading away whilst that pork roasts to juicy perfection.
|
Just been to Morrisons, we have one, freshly re-done, where they are trying out their new "posh" format.
Fruit and Veg,
Where they used to have crappy fruit and veg, limited choice, and that nasty "street market" format, this one is all modern with "misty" cool air blowers (gimic?). The choice was astonishing, fruit and veg I have never seen on sale before and only seen in specialist shops, and some stuff I have never even heard of!
Rating Excellent
Bakery
Stunning. I always use the "Spelt" test - ie do they have any. Yes they did, not only pure spelt bread but spelt and other flours mixed. Wide choice of all sorts of types of bread.
Along with the patisserie, this rates Excelent
Deli
Ok - on par with Sainsbury
Fishmonger
Good - they had fresh sardines that had been butterfly filleted and mixed with chile and garlic. Lacking in swordfish or Tuna steaks tho.
Wine department
Poor, very very poor. Far far worse than a normal Morrisons. Small (its a big supermarket this one) very limited choice and displayed by price band and colour.
Crap wine department in fact,
Puddings, deserts and sweets.
Really poor, very limited choice indeed.
Butchery
Looks like thy had some good joints to be butchered to choice, but limited choice, no veal for example.
Tills
Plenty - and fast.
Overall, a real curates egg this one.
|
Gosh, they allowed a Morrisons in Surrey? Did you remember to wear some tracksuit bottoms?
:-)
|
Ho Ho - They've got one of these new ones in Holyhead - which is an er...interesting town !
|
Nothing wrong with the Morrisons in Coalville.
The rest of the town, however... ;)

Big Ford dealer, isn't there?

I am shocked. I thought a Morrisons at Ownslow West was getting a bit close to Surrey.
|
Morrison's is a very good store in many ways.
Locally - well 12 miles away- our nearest, they have much better butchery, delicatessen, fishmonger and cheeses displays than either Tesco or Sainsbury's.
Their veggies are at least as good and some of their stock items are not available in the other two mentioned.

While out with dog this evening, my wife mentioned that we ( she ) needed some cheap brandy for something she's cooking. We came down off the towpath and swung by our local Spar where I bought a 75cl bottle of their own brand V.S,O.P.
Tenner, so clearly not meant to impress with. Anyway, I thought I'd better test it like you do. It's not bad. I might have to test it again...Hic...

My father-in-law went on pints of dark Leffe in Brittany when we were all there a few years ago. He's a hardened beer drinker but I had to prop him up on the way back to the house we were renting !

Two for £5 Tesco
BUT £2.38 in Asda (each)

Not exactly non-motoring, but it could be seen as a bargain!. 10p off a litre of fuel when you spend £60 or more in Sainsbury's - at least, that's the offer in our local one

There seems to be plenty of discounts around at the moment. My wife had a £12 voucher for an £80 spend at Tesco last week, and I had a £5 voucher that I used for petrol on the same day.
|
>>10p off a litre of fuel when you spend £60 or more in Sainsbury's
SWMBO got sent 4 '£9 off a £60 spend' vouchers for Sainsbury's (she usually does Tesco) and came back with a 10p off a litre of fuel voucher (and they had no Grouse). I had to give the two 5p off Tesco vouchers to my daughter. I don't buy enough of the stuff.
|
I got sent some £4 of a £20 spend voucher for Sainsburys. I use them at Tesco.
|
Just grabbed a litre of Famous Grouse for 13 quid at Sainsbury's

Did you carry it home in your waterproof duffle bag?

Speaking of Amazon, I recently bought this:
www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-KX-TG2511ET-Single-Digital-Cordless/dp/B003LPTAMK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322471456&sr=8-3
Much better standby time and better call quality than my previous BT cordless.
|
We bought a set of these Panasonics when we moved here to replace BT Freestysles - not been able ot get on with them. The Freestyles were better in many respects. No doubt I'll be told I'm wrong in a minute !
|
...No doubt I'll be told I'm wrong in a minute !...
I'm not overwhelmed by the call quality of the Panasonic.
Given the BT phone was worse, I'm wondering if Iffy Towers is not suited to dect phones.
Could be your place is the same.
|
I have a panasonic KX-TG6511E
www.cordless-phones.uk.com/cordless-phones/digital-cordless-phones/panasonic-kxtg-6511-phone
Call quality is excellent, standby time is measured in weeks! talk time is long enough to exhaust Nicole, and it does not interfere with the Wifi. Rated all round superb by me, and beats the BT rubbish we had before by a country mile in every respect.
|
>> I have a panasonic KX-TG6511E
I've got the panasonic KXTG6522. It's a brilliant phone.
|
I've a theory about that - the phone system has been less than perfect here to be honest. We had a broadband failure few weeks ago - never had that before.

Asda are doing packs of 15x300ml bottles of Budweiser lager (5% alcohol) for £7. Not something to get the real ale fans excited, but handy to have a few in the fridge over Christmas. Works out at £1.56/l, or 88p per pint.
|
Thanks for the tip, I've ran out of beer so need to get some for the weekend :).
|
Morrisons doing 12 bottles Miller for £6. Pringles , buy one, get two free.
Apparently they sell fruit and veg and stuff as well!!! :)
|
>> I've ran out of beer so need to get some for the weekend
15 bottles in a weekend??
They will most likely drop the price further still the week before Christmas. Last year they were doing 20-can packs of all the 4% lagers for £10, two for £15, three for £18.

That was last year....5% inflation, increased booze duty, 20%VAT....dont think we will get quite the same deals as last year
|
>> Last year were doing 20-can packs of all the 4% lagers for £10, two for £15,

I know the 4%-ers can get very cheap, but good deals on the 5% stuff aren't quite so common. But I'll be keeping my eyes peeled :)
|
Plan to go down to ASDA after my 9pm job. I tend to get through more supermarket beer now as I often go down to my mates flats and have a few beers there before going onto the club.
Considering I do most the drinking before going into the club this safes a massive fortune. The downside is pubs are closing as a direct result of all this at cost beer supermarkets sell.
I don't fall for it though, only ever buy stuff on offer at supermarkets, the rest I buy from local discount shops or the local green grocer and butchers, you save a fortune and get better quality goods.
The margins on some of the stuff supermarkets sell which is not on offer is simply staggering.
|
Got them now. That should last me till midnight :).

You're cutting back?

Yeah 25 units a day maximum for me now :). Actually am a sad twit so I won't be touching any of it until the weekend.
As much as I am a hypocrite for buying them, I do think it is far too cheap. 47p each is just silly.

Budweiser Budvar comes from the Czech Republic and was the 'beer of kings'.
Budvar tried to copy this and was the 'king of beers'. But tasted like wee.

The Americans, generally, are **** poor at making beer, the Samuel Adams is a notable exception although a mite gassy, another exception was the beer they serve at a microbrewery in Salem Mass....amongst other things (including the advice of the owner of the B&B) I forgot its name...:-0 Good place to be on July 4 ! You need to be in Salem on Halloween!
Your right, large scale commercial brewing int he states is, without doubt, capable of throwing ou the worst pee water known to man. You are also right, that local micro breweries can be very very good. Found a good one in Seattle.

Had some good beers in micro breweries in San Fransisco and Sunnyvale. The later was a tray of beer in small glasses to sample them. Going back a few years as I've not been to California in over ten years.

Here in north Surrey it is 135.9 @ my local Shell station, BP is always nore expensive and Tesco / Sainsburys if often not cheaper.
It is several miles to my nearest supermarket petrol so careful planning is required to cash ino on any offers.
|
Local petrol stations are 134.9p, but the ASDA two miles away is 128.9p, and a petrol station in a town I visit a lot 6 miles away is just 128.9p.
I never buy petrol in this part of south Manchester any more, they are charging Kensington and Chelsea prices.

But there are plenty of Petrol Stations in Chelsea which a cheaper. I spent a lot of time in Chelsea a couple of weeks ago, was one on Grosvenor Road (or could have been Chelsea embankment) for 135.9p petrol.
There is of course rip of petrol stations in London, and from what I have seen they usually fill the car up for you etc.

Plenty is a bit of an overstatement. Chelsea real estate is too valuable to have garages cluttering up the place.
|
I did think it was a bit odd, but it might be planning permission restraints. Not every where can be exclusive apartments.
|
The local variations are stark, not just raw prices but the petrol/diesel gap too.
Sainsbury Weedon Rd Northampton: Petrol 134.9, Diesel 140.9
Sainsbury Fosse Pk Leicester: Petrol 127.9, Diesel 138.9

Not stark round here in a three mile radius of my house.
Tesco (two of them) 134.9
Sainsbury 134.9
Morissons 134.9
Shell 134.9
Total 134.9
Esso 134.9
Cartel? Noooo.

Same story within 3, or even 10, miles of here. But a bit further afield in Leicester or in Gordon/FoR country in East Northants, its much cheaper - at least for petrol.
Not new either.
In summer 1996 my Father's terminal condition had me back and forth to Leeds twice a week. Quickly learned to manage th BX's fuel to get the warning light on as I arrived in God's own county. Diesel was 49.9p/litre in Wakefield and 54.9 at home.
Why?

Santander have a credit card which charges a £24 annual fee and gives
1% Rebate on major supermarket purchases
2% Rebate on Major High Street stores (not M&S I think) but most others
3% Rebate on petrol purchases.

But how many retailers will accept them?

Most garages and supermarkets which is where my spending is. Full list of high street stores on their website or leaflet available in branch

Decent review when tested at £70
www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/reviews/compactcameras/128867/1/nikon-coolpix-l23-review.html
Verdict
The Nikon L23 has plenty going for it. The large buttons, low price tag, simple operation and comfortable handing make it ideal for first-time users. It's a shame, therefore, that image quality is generally quite poor and not suitable for critical use - but, considering its £70 price tag, it's hit the nail on the head for the budget end of the compact market.

At Morrisons again.
Half price whole salmon, bought a lovely fish for £13.80, have just filleted it meself and it's given 8 thick juicy steaks and from nearer the tail end two lovely steaks, each big enough for a decent meal, so worked out at £1.38 per generous portion.
