Cheap PAYG camera phone. - Roger.
SWMBO has decided she would like a camera enabled mobile phone.
It must be PAYG as a contract is a no-no given the low use our mobiles get. A contract is not worth it and even more pertinent, I don't want any more monthly direct debits!
A decent screen would be nice, as would either biggish buttons or, perhaps, a qwerty keyboard.
We are not too fussed about internet access, as I guess it is very expensive to use.(Advice here?)
The camera needs to be of reasonable quality as she is a keen snapper (of photos!) as well as snapping at me!
I know there are hundreds of phones out there, but I would welcome forum member's suggestions, hopefully based on personal experience.
Thanks in advance.

Why not buy a camera?

I like the Nokia classics - sturdy, reliable, easy to use, and good battery life.

This is my current one, don't know what the camera's like:

She has a camera, but it's a bit bulky to lug about on a regular basis.

Touchscreen, blackberry style (i.e. with qwerty below display) or old style with 0-9 keypad?

Touchscreens do take some getting used to.

As usual I'd say in general Nokia and Sony Ericsson take more care of the camera than say HTC; both my HTCs have rubbish cameras. A quick Google or search on Flickr will reveal loads of user images from most cameraphones.

I wouldn't bother with internet on PAYG unless there's a specific reason for using it.

rough budget? 60-70 quid would give some reasonable choices.

Another vote for the above mentioned Nokia C1, - the Hostess has one, and the photo/video capabilities are more than adequate. Tis nice and slim too, but still cant beat my 3310!

buy her a smaller camera. If its the camera she wants, the phone is not the way to do it. Lots of good small cameras around.

If you are after good quality photos, then look for a camera instead as others already said.

Otherwise Nokia 5800 is a good phone (even though Symbian is obsolete). Camera quality is acceptable (has flash too).

Well here's some sample images from the last 3 generations of Nokia cameraphone, maybe not in cheap PAYG territory yet, but results good enough for many:-

What sort of photos does she like taking? As many have said a good, smaller camera might be better than a phone with a camera.

I ask about photos taken because if they have to be in low light conditions or be fast moving, most phones will struggle. A lot of cameras do as well. Image stabilisation another bonus on many cameras.

A camera-phone would not be the primary photo taker; more of an opportunistic "Oh that's a nice tree/flower/house, I'll snap it"!
For more planned photos, i.e on a trip to say, the Yorkshire Dales, the main camera would certainly be on board!
I know nowt about cameras as I have no interest in, or ability with, photography, so perhaps I should rephrase the camera bit to ask what is acceptable in a modern camera phone's photo capability?

A cheap way to get a better quality phone would be to look in Cash Converters* or similar. Lots of verified working handsets for sale on all networks, in all conditions from good up to brand new - they won't buy in tatty, unsellable stock. Pick a clean, non-scratched one with a good-spec camera and pop in a SIM from Poundland**, sorted.

They also have a watertight guarantee to cover you (and catch up with the scumbags) if the handset subsequently gets blocked by the network.

*Other second-hand shops are available.
**Other single-price discounters are available.
