Anyone who didn't see the last few seconds of Newsnight last night, Google 'Baroness Trumpington' and watch the old girl being unimpressed by Lord King's comments on WW2 survivors.
'Hasn't forgotten her semaphore' was the way Jeremy Paxman put it. Heh heh...

Really hope there's no-one that timid on here!
I was amused and Mrs F highly so... her sense of humour and combined respect/disrespect for authority is rather more highly slanted than mine.

Had me puzzled for a minute. I'd forgotten about him, for the avoidance of doubt it was not the self-made man and ball bearing magnate who became Lord King of BA - he died in 2005.
I enjoyed the clip - delivered with disdain and an even temper by the look of it.

Having watched it several times, Im far from convinced she did anything other than wave her hand at him. Freeze it at the right moment and her fingers are in the right place, so what, her hand was open so she must be new to using such a gesture given she is rather rubbish at using it.
Not buying it whatsoever, Im suprised so many people are, utter cobblers.

Clueless, to use your own word.

Tom King, now Lord King of Bridgewater. Minister in Thatcher/Major govts.

Surely Stu is just teasing us when he pretends to think that no one would make a vulgar gesture on the front bench of the House of Lords?
I don't believe our country is as sad and po-faced as that yet, despite the deplorable trends I see on all sides (hysteria for example, completely phoney emotion, general and widespread dishonesty, etc). The baroness is quite clearly a wicked old girl with the robust, deadpan sense of humour that must have stood her in good stead at Bletchley Park 65 years ago. If you see the full clip, she makes the gesture twice to ensure that it is noticed.
Since I am being sentimental about female politicians, I would add that I am smitten by the icy beauty and demure incisiveness of the well-tailored Danish prime minister. She's like a diamond necklace in soft golden light. If I know anything about TV cameramen and their hawk-like lascivious eyes we will be seeing a lot more of this lady whose country fortunately is about to inherit the EU presidency under the law of Buggins's Turn.

Not at all, I think people see what they want to see and I agree its rather amusing to think she would do such a thing, I just dont think she made the gesture intentionally - I do think she waved him off, but not in the two fingered way, it just happened that the camera angle makes it look as such.
I think its rather sad that people make such a fuss about it either way, its the non-story of the week.

>> its the non-story of the week.
Goodness, what authority. I stand corrected, along with almost everyone else.
'Camera angle' indeed! Snigger.

Her biggest FAIL is having that troughing oik, "lord" Kinnock, as her father-in-law.
Aaaaaright!

Me too Dutchie. Photographed yesterday patting the US president on the behind too. But I fear her in-laws may not meet Roger's high standards, although I know nothing about them.

|
Mind you she failed to show proper deference to Bettie - a rebel from good Celtic stock.
|
Good for her, i reckon it was victory salute too, don't make 'em like that any more, and mores the pity.
Funny thing though talking about ladies who hold high office having a certain fascination for some here..;)...i do empathise, the one Mistress at school did similar for me, still does.
It's still sexist, men can look like a kicked in muck bucket, be 4 stone overweight and bald and still hold office, but it doesn't work the other way often, women have to be generally good looking to get on so well, exceptions as always.

Its a Mans World (so the song states) but theres ever increasing room for a pretty face and good legs! (Er! i mean good sharp female brain!!) ;-)

I knew this thread was somewhere!!
The subject, Baroness Trumpington, died yesterday:
www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/27/lady-trumpington-obituary
(alternative obits are available).
Like the anecdote in there about her visiting a stud while an Agriculture Minister. Her entourage were somewhat embarrassed when one of the stallions put his 'masculinity' on display. Her ladyship's response was 'he knows I'm a former mayor' (she held that office in Cambridge for some years).

When I saw this thread on the first page I really thought Lud was back.....I do miss him.

I'm not sure if I should be impressed or not that you remembered a thread after seven years!
|
I remember Lud, not the thread but he was hard to forget and I'd love to know what happened to him.

Well, I shouldn't think the odds are in favour of him showing up again.
I seem to recall the time he flounced off he was still replying to emails. So I guess, he's probably not flounced.
|
|
Fallen off his perch, maybe? Hopefully not.
|
|
Well, I cannot find any Obits, but that isn't conclusive. My guess would be that a bucket has been kicked, but one never knows.
|
|
Won't he be closer to 90 than 80 now, if he's still puffing?

Obits all refer to her salute to Tom King which was why I remembered. No idea it was that long ago.

You've a much better memory than me, I wouldn't have remembered it for all the tea in china.

She had some pretty dodgy friends it seems. Not least Jimmy Savile..

Having a few dodgy friends is what people with character do. Some of AC's often sounded intriguingly dodgy.
