How much have you spent on preparing for the snow? - Falkirk Bairn
2 x snow shovels £40
3 x bag of grit £12
2 x front tyres @£55 each (4mm & 3mm so due soon anyway)
2 x fan belts + Fitting- slightly cracked £xx (fitting later this week)
2 x foil blankets £10
2 x scrapers £5,
2 x de-icer £3

1 x fan for boiler as old one was noisy (on the way out?) £50

In the bigger picture maybe not exactly a fortune but over 2 weeks it mounts up!

What else should I have bought, or will you buy?

My end of Northants usually gets off lightly as well. Sub zero temperatures without snow are the other contingency.

Need to get some grit for paths/drive and more screenwash additive (+ meths in case it gets really cold) plus check scrapers are complete and in place. Less than a tenner all in.

I nearly bought a sledge at the garden centre yesterday. Also, daughter has outgrown last year's wellies.

Car-wise, I'll sling a shovel in the boot just in case, like I do every year :)

I'm hoping to make some money out of it, by selling the set of chains we had to buy in the States last year for our hire car and brought back thinking they would fit the Focus. But they don't.

Nothing, got half a bag of salt left from last year and Kettering seems less affected by snow than surrounding towns for some reason, presumably some microclimate factor.

What about floods. Far more likely disaster scenario than blizzards. Sandbags, emergency generator, fortnight supply of canned food, waterproof clothing, small inflateable boat, two way radio are minimum requirements.

Then there's drought to worry about.

A couple of kilos of cheap table salt - it's cleaner than rock salt - for the path by the back door.

Tip for snow shovel users: sprinkle some salt or rub a candle on the face of the shovel - the snow doesn't stick as much when you come to unload.

How much have you spent on preparing for the snow? - Ted
Not a lot...carry a fair bit of kit anyway for the job. Always have choccy bars on board but stored well away from the reach of greedy hands ( Me ) .

Bought 12 kilos of cheap table salt..about £6.
Snow shovel from Go Outdoors...impulse buy, about £7, to save carrying the steel one about.
3 De-icer in trigger bottles......would get them anyway. About a fiver. Will fill 'em with meths when empty.
Got about 6 aerosol de-icers from last year. I just leave them behind the front garden wall for handiness.
Always have a good travel rug on board, but if I got stranded I'd just get out and struggle to the nearest bistro.
Salt would be the most essential for me. Fell 3 times last year, all on home ground. If it happens again I might sue meself !

I dunno, there are some right muggins on here.

You spend a fortune on "Winter Tyres" to cope with the snow, then you spend a fortune on stuff to get rid of the snow.

Nothing, I already have a small shovel, a flask and a warm coat.

Don't want winter tyres, if anyone at work got wind of me having those I might have to at least attempt to go to work if it snows. As it is I've got the best excuse going. Automatic Merc with low profile tyres. "Sorry chaps, no can do today I'm afraid, must dash, snowman to build and wine to mull ! " Heh heh !

I remember the day after Scotland ground to a halt in the snow last year, my neighbour and I were out in my wee hut at the bottom of the garden, having walked through knee high snow.
We had the wood burning stove on, we were in our T shirts and we had a couple of games of darts and some beer.

On that basis I have concentrated on getting the necessities covered:

Beer fridge is full with a variety of bottles and cans for every eventuality.
New darts sets have been purchased over the years.
There is a rack full of bone dry wood and some more just about fully dry. And off-site I have half a garage full as well although that may not be dry enough for this year.

Oh, and have a pile of frozen burgers that can be cooked on top of the stove :)

Still got half a bin-bag of last year's salt/grit I acquisitioned from the grit bin at our health centre.

Also got about 10 litres of concentrated screenwash in the house - highly recommend the -60c stuff from LIDL - stick some in a scooshie bottle for the best de-icer around (other than straight meths) - Kept such a bottle in the car last winter in case it froze between journeys.

Never found any need for a snow shovel - a standard shovel and some elbow grease always did the job in the past. Again normal shovel kept in the boot last year in case of a 'digging-out' being necessary - happened once when the Forester bottomed-out in 18 inches of fresh snow.

Not going to work isn't really an option for me unfortunately, but I'm not expecting difficulties with the Shogun - will be a 'mare if it gets stuck though since it weighs about 2300kgs...

Just spent £120 on wine tonight. Just in case I get snowed in.
Man maths tells me that my new credit card gives me 5% back in the first 3 months (up to a max of £100) and I get 5% discount on 6 bottles. Actually I bought more than 6 bottles but whose counting.

How much have you spent on preparing for the snow? - Mike Hannon
I normally buy a few cans of cassoulet and some bread flour as emergency rations, because we always get snowed in for a bit, off and on, and I don't attempt any heroics any more because I don't have to.
The emergency rations usually get eaten the following year.
But I may not bother this year (so far, so good) because our little commune has bought a snowplough blade for the tractor, and a grit spinner (no salt though, I'm pleased to say). Last year the grit spinner got here (5km from village) twice but both times no grit was coming out. I did mention this to the Maire...

The producers aren't daft - if it was comfy for the celebs in there they wouldn't do all that bickering and infighting that makes it so entertaining to the general public (not me of course). And because they're so starved it only takes a bit of alcohol won in some sort of task to make them drunk and do more silly things.

Did you run the pump occasionally during the summer, as good practice suggests? Did your system have appropriate additives to prevent corrosion etc.?

It seems such an uncharacteristic lapse if not, Z. After all, we do expect nothing less than perfection from you here on C4P.

:-)

As others have suggested, it could have been worse. It could have happened over Christmas/New Year, with no-one keen to come out and/or charging sky-high rates.

If he had an up to date boiler it would run its pump automatically for a few seconds after each 24 hours of inactivity.

Yes it had sufficient inhibitor, yes the pump runs daily as it services the hotwater, and yes I have a boiler that does pump over-run following a heat cycle.

None of this would have prevented the coil from frying.

Actually we travelled quite a bit during our early years there. Madrid (Royal Palace and Armoury), followed by The Valley of the Fallen and The Escorial, where the Kings and Queens of Spain are buried, Sevilla, Jerez de la Frontera, (Sandeman's bodega and the riding school), Los Alpujarras, Granada, twice (The Alhambra),
Nerja, twice (the caves), Cordoba (the most impressive in some ways with a RC cathedral INSIDE the çi-devant mosque. Go if you can!).

M+S as a nod to the winter, as the originals tyres were terrible - as mentioned in another thread.

I’m a ‘sucker’ for gadgets and I’d be interested in how that thing checks out, although it would be as much use as a chocolate teapot up here on ‘the moor’, AND if the device left behind any snow at all, it would soon freeze and become iced up – which is far worse than the snow!

Lemme tell ya about the last ice age – bought a BIG bag of rock n’ roll salt, cleared snow as soon as it fell using shovel, spread sed rock salt over long driveway paths, etc.

Result = one ruined driveway.

I remember the headlines end September promising us snow for October. As it was the Daily wail, I ignored them...

That electric snowblower has "Plug in the extra long 10m (approx.33ft) power cable"

They have to be kidding.. 10 metres gets me out of the garage - the plug is in the rear wall.. and about 3 metres further..

If that's the use of their advertising, it's overblown...

I think it was colder today - this evening the car was saying 7 deg C.

I hope it's an okay winter. Ignoring the fact I didn't get a heated windscreen (ordered incorrectly by dealer) and my 18" tyres will struggle in snow.... the VW CC needs to drop the windows a fraction (like a BMW Mini) to open the doors!

I had heated seats on the BMW RT (bike) - a wuss' option I thought, in fact they were very good - don't have them on the GS, doubt whether I'll miss them. Mind you the heated grips are really good, even on a wet summer's day.

On cloth maybe, but not leather. Can't beat heated leather seats.

You are problaby right anyway the seats feel warm,I look at it as a bit of a gimmic.

The heated leather seats warm up really quickly (base and back of seat). Three different heat settings too.

For the hot summer days I thought black leather could get hot - so opted for climate seats so they can be cooled in summer. But you can also use it all year round.

It is a nice extra in a car if it works, better be warm than cold.Climate seats that is posh cooling in summer.

I am surprised how cheap adding climate seats was.

In the Focus the quick heating windscreen is a bonus.I'm used to it now the car has a starter button press the clutch first.Last winter the Daughters Panda handled better in the snow than the Focus with the fatter tyres.I felt more in control driving her Panda. The Focus has the Michelin Tyres plenty of thread.

Only 3? My Vectra-C has more than that.

So in fact you hope the next 3 (4?) winters are okay. Cannot believe somebody who relies on his car for work has bought something so impractical.

I tend to work from home a lot :-) The door opening problem is no different to any cars with frameless windows like on a BMW Mini. It's not having winter tyres that might be more 'fun'. But most cars don't have winter tyres in the UK.
