A video has been posted on YouTube of a health and safety adviser falling from a ladder after he apparently failed to observe correct safety procedures for climbing a ladder.

Morrison PLC, which is contracted by Gateshead Housing Group, said it had suspended Paul Cavanagh while an investigation was carried out.

May be scripted or hoaxed in some way, but if its not, poetic justice for those who hate the hi-vis H&S gestapo culture.

The DT reported that he swung on a safety line before coming to earth in next door's flower bed.

"Mr Cavanagh has been suspended". It sounded too good to be true to me.

'Always three points of contact' is sensible safety advice for ladder use.

So two feet and one hand, or one foot (while ascending/descending) and two hands.

Ladders are perceived by many employers as being virtually illegal these days given recent H&S legislation. Scaff tower or cherry picker.

A safety line makes sense working from scaffolding. The ladder has got to be secured. This was silly a accident waiting to happen.

The chimney sweeps here drop a brush down from the top. So all roofs have to have a fixed ladder or steps on the roof itself. But to actually get up there, they use the house holders ladder. They don't even carry a ladder on their vans. Can't see the uk authorities allowing workers to use untested ladders of dubious age and construction.

Makes my legs wobble to see him walking up the roof ladder and standing on the ridge.

Yes, ladders are now only for access. No work can be carried out from one, a stable working platform is needed.

On my college course we spent half a day doing the "climbing a ladder" module - all the usual PPE needed plus another bloke to "foot" the ladder at all times until it was tied securely to the structure.

So back in my telegraph pole climbing days, 'monkeying up the the stay wire' is no longer acceptable?

Whoossies!

You mean you hang it on the top rung before putting the ladder up ? :)

How do you carry it up - in your teeth?

Nothing is 100% safe.I used to use wooden ladders for any work outside the house. They where heavy but solid once stood against the wall.Aluminium are lighter to carry but not as stable. As proven in this incident on the film clip.>:)

do you grab the rungs or the sides of a ladder when climbing/decending? i think the fire brigade have a policy of grabbing the rungs in the unfortunate case of the feet slipping off because of all the water, same goes for the navy...i could be wrong tho
