I fear this is a stupid question but here goes anyway! I'm not sure if I've simply never noticed before and it's been happening anyway, but when my hot water is on (without the heating) the heating pump still runs. The rads don't get hot. Is this a fault?

If you have a zone valve, No, the system is working as designed, circulating water between boiler and hot water cylinder when required.
