Just looked in at HJ (as I sometimes do and post occasionally if it helps).... anyway on the right was adverts for single women! If my other half walked in she'd be wondering what I was looking at! And rightly so.
So (and I've reported it) it would seem they are accidentally advertising things Big Bad Dave would find interesting (so to speak).
Watch out. Not clicked on the adverts for young females. Just warning what HJ site is now showing as adverts. It will be Thai brides next...

Never have understood why men are so dim as to think some young attractive, often foreign, woman genuinely likes them rather than their money or their status. It's a mystery to me. Unless of course many do realise they've bought a personal hooker and really aren't bothered and just keep up the pretence for others.

Well I've been and had a look and all I can see when I turn my ad blocker off is car ads. I even looked at a post on matrimonial problems to see if it is context sensitive, no luck ;-)
Any suggestions as to other sites I might visit?

Actually the last such English/Thaicouple I saw was at a shopping centre in Doncaster a couple of days ago. They had a young baby, on whom they both obviously doted.
We also met a nice similar couple in Spain. The wife made the most delicious Thai curry and they appeared as happy as Larry, so I think these partnerships can work.

I'd been going to post about this for a day or two but the OP beat me to it. Hadn't noticed stuff on HJ (though he's still using pop unders!); rather its the ads here that tickle me. Having said that other sites, in particular the Berlingo forum, clearly use the same feed as C4P.
In the last 10 day I've had as well as car related stuff, dating for the mature; dieting for women; Wonga and World of Warcraft. Earlier in the year one for the Church of Scientology popped up!
Are they just triggered by my browsing or is it possible that what I see is influenced by other users of my external IP address? Mrs B might be interested in diet stuff and Bromp junior's P&E course at school might have included cults. MAture dating would however remain a mystery!!

Yes, so for example if you browsed the Halfords site, you will get add for halfords pop up.

A lot of sites do have trackers and web bugs in them that do keep watch on where you go and what you search for. This will affect what ads you see. I don't like that idea so I have ghostery installed in firefox which blocks all of these trackers. I also have adblock so I generally don't see ads anyway as I got fed up of rolling banners and scrolling banners stopping me from reading what I actually went there to read on many sites.

The older 'gwilo' and younger Asian woman as a couple is unsurprisingly a very common sight in HK, many men (apparently) come on assignment here and part-exchange their original higher mileage families for newer models.
In fairness, many seem happy and many seem to go on to start second families. It does, however look a little incongruous sometimes, especially when the aforementioned gwilo is dressed 20 years 'younger' than his actual age, possibly at his younger partner's behest...?

'Love imports' are very popular here. Although it mainly seems to be older, rather strange men that do it most. A swedish girl friend told me it was because no swedish woman would have them, and there's probably an element of truth in that.
My ex neighbour got a chinese woman off the internet. I hope he didn't pay much as she's old, short, fat and ugly. I thought the idea was to get a young fit one. But anyway, she only stayed in the village for a few weeks, and hated it. No shops, buses, friends etc, so she moved up to Stockholm. I think she gave him an ultimatum to go with him, so he did. Ha, I told him easier to get a new one off the net.

I had a Filipino gf some years back and she was undoubtedly lovely but in the end, I realised I couldnt live with someone who didnt apparently have any opinion on anything, she seemed to be hardwired to agree with the man in her life and trying to extract her opinion on something was like a dog chasing its tail.
I just couldnt commit myself any further to someone who amounted to a housemaid with benefits - may be ok for some guys, good luck to them, but I was young enough to want something a bit more balanced.
That said, my brother is lining up for a Thai bride I think, he rather likes Thai women and the country as a whole having been born in that part of the world, so I may yet have a Thai sister-in-law.

So it seems the ad choices adverts here have the same issue. And their context sensitive nature, mentioning them here is making it worse no doubt.
As far as I recall, on the HJ site nothing on the screen obvious should have triggered the ad. And before anyone suggests it neither would cookies from my browser :-)
You would have thought the site admin could select the type of adverts allowed though.

I dont seem to get any of the "naughty" ones ( worse luck ! ) I just get ads for mountain bikes etc. Maybe it's more to do with where else individuals browse?...

Something seems to have changed in the last few months switching from from almost wholly car related stuff to far more diverse subjects. The dating one might cause some people trouble on the distaff side! The dieting one I was seeing last month was graphically laughable, I cannot beleive it got many clicks. Any offencse I felt was probably personal - I have good family reasons to support BEAT (the former Eating Disorders Assoc).
Ads are blocked on my work computer, which is as well because to be honest they're getting close to the point where IT usage policy would be in play.
Can Stephen clarify where they're coming from and to what extent we can select content?

Ads don't bovver me at all at all, I zoom in so I can only see the text, then I adjust the page so I see nuffink else.

The ads are simply those that Google Adsense feeds in. We don't get to decide what gets shown; they just give the code that will deliver an MPU (the big squarish one above Latest Forum Posts), the Leaderboard (at the top) and a standard banner (at the bottom of the thread). We used to have a skyline ad previously (the long tall one outside the site on the RHS).
Google bought a company a while back that delivers ads based on the content of the site and incorporated this technology into Adsense.
The upshot is that if you really keep on discussing naked women or whatever, you will end up with ads that are targeted to people who are interested in that kind of thing!
On a related note, it is hard to get direct ads from say car manufacturers onto this site if it stays a forum because advertisers don't like to feel that they may be trying to sell something that may being slanged on the adjacent forum. i.e. not money well spent!
Also Google Adsense is the best of the advertising agencies for sites of this size. Some of you may recall when we really did have soft porn ads when using other networks.

The original ad I saw looking slightly dodgy but wasn't Russian/Thai or anything related.
I had not thought that the ad at the time could be related to the content of the web page, e.g. the content of a thread's name. No doubt my mention of Thai brought some of the ads. Followed by others mentioning other ads.
And yes I know this site uses local cookies. I looked up things on Halfords and this site and many others then started showing me ads. Which was stupid really - I'd already looked for what I wanted to check out.

The ads on here are context sensitive. So a particular word or words will result in adsense displaying adverts for something else.
So if enough of us said something on here you MIGHT get something funny or whatever. I doubt if I said lemmings it would make a difference for anyone else.
The reason I started this thread was the ad I'd seen on the other site cannot have been based on what I had previously browsed. It wasn't what I joked about above. And I daren't click on it to find out what it really was either.
Of course ads can also be based on your rough location too. Easy to figure out where you are based on IP address. The BBC relies on this for iPlayer for example. And it was interesting to browse here when using a temporary proxy I found in the Lebanon which I'd forgot to turn off (Thomas Cook was not working for BBC customers - they did admit to a fault and fixed it in the end).

I just clicked on this thread and the ad that came up was for filipinocupid.com (which I think should, more correctly, be filipinacupid.com) with pictures of attractive young women (presumably) from the Philippines. I can assure you that there is no way that this could be reflection on my browsing history. It must just be picking it up from keywords in the thread.
