tis that time again and the choice is doing my head in to be honest. NEED to make calls and text a bit. e-mail would be an advantage perhaps once or twice a month. It strikes me that the 'normal' phones seem very cheaply built now so was thinking of the smartphone route. Once again the choice................ Son-in-Law reckons if I have a touch screen that it'll be over the nearest hedge on the first day. I don't have a lot of patience for sure. Blackberry buttons are a no no for obvious reasons. Samsung solid (rubber jobby) gets some poor reviews cos the torch! can come on inadvertently and flatten the battery. Has anybody used or has a Motorola Defy, Gorilla glass and supposedly dust proof. Help please cos it's driving me mad.

Cheers.................Martin.

If you want a "phone" with limited email have a look at a nokia 3720 classic, virtually indestructible with a huge battery life.

Touchscreens are infuriating until you get used to them. I nearly stomped my N8 into a gazillion pieces several times during the few first days of use.

There are some with touchscreens and keyboards. Most phones have stupid tiny keys now. I'd try the blackberry anyway as they have good battery life and the stupid little midget keys are a fact of life.

The iphone touch screen is nothing but a delight to use,

Even after the IOs 5 update screwed up my email and apps.

Touch screens often don't respond to gloved fingers though. I have occasionally resorted to swiping the screen with my nose to answer calls.

Capacitative touch screens won't work for gloved hands. So that will be the case for iPhones and most (if not all) Android phones.

The resistive touch screens would work - but are generally crap. And don't support multi-touch.

And mine. Working again 100% now though.

Wouldn't be without my iPhone now.

iPhone or Blackberry too fragile for builders etc - I would never take my iPhone on the bike for that reason. Get the Nokia. Does what it says and will still work when it gets wet or dusty...or cold...

Friend of mine dropped his old Nokia in his garden pond a couple of times. Used to keep it in his top shirt pocket. He'd bend down to feed his fish and...

Successfully dried the phone out in the airing cupboard with no apparent damage.

You couldn't do that with an iPhone and I reckon a Blackberry would be toast.

I mentioned in the other place my old BB lost it's ability to type the letter "t" due to water damage. Quie inconvenien ha was.

Mine did that and my blinking password had a "t" in it. In fairness 02 handled it well, it was at a particularly bad time for me and vented my spleen at them. I had a shiny new phone and a 125 pound credit a couple of months later.

In my line of work, when i used to work, many a Nokia 5100 dropped down the bog, bend over to lift the lid and whoops out the top pocket and down she goes to the bottom ala das Boot.

We got very adept at stripping them apart. cleaning the contacts, and putting them back together., would expect noting else from computer engineers

Didnt stop us claiming they were toast and getting 48 hours peace.

Yeah, did that with my 9210i at least twice (well it is big and heavy), 6680 and E70 once each, SE K750i has survived a couple of swimming sessions as well.

Since i updated my iphone when i send text messages to some people the "sent" messages are hi-lighted in blue, but messages to others are still in shown in green. Any ideas why this is - assuming that you can understand what i am going on about that is !

|No idea! I will cross that new bridge when I come to it.Too knackered after deleting 14 months previously deleted emails, and re-installing and rearranging all my apps.

I chose Nokia C3 01 for my last upgrade, have no regrets, it's a normal phone with normal keys but has touch screen functions for menu's etc.

Works well as a stand alone phone and with the bluetooth set, seems well made and standing up to my not gentle use well so far.

How long has it been in your possession GB??
 New phone - -
Had it at least 6 months Martin, possibly 8.

Took me a little getting used to a Nokia again after using a Sony for a couple of years, but second nature now, i'm not a regular texter by any means but the few that i do send are easy enough with Nokia's predictive speller.

The phone works well on Orange, and since they tied themselves in with T Mobile is it?, i virtually never get a dropped call, the Sony would do that now and again.

I knew that it was going to be fun when itunes failed to recognise my phone when i tried to sync it after the update was done, and i had to "rebuild" it from scratch as if it had just come out of the box !

The whole experience of Apple products is what makes them so special. And because they control both the hardware and operating system, this upgrade process works so well.

Not mine on Sunday, took an hour and a bit but zero problems, all apps fine, email and phone logs all 100%, all backed up and reinstalled automatically. Does seem a tiny bit slower moving between screens and battery life and signal no flipping better so IMO faultless as a mobile computer, average as a phone. At best.

It might have something to do with iMessage? (the track messages with delivery and read receipts)

Send and receive unlimited text, photo and video messages with other iOS 5 users
Track messages with delivery and read receipts
Group messaging and secure encryption
Works over mobile networks and Wi-Fi*

* Normal carrier data rates may apply. Messages will be sent as SMS when iMessage is unavailable; carrier messaging fees apply

My Nokia 2330 Classic is perfect for both making AND receiving calls. It has had a hard life, being battered a fair bet. Metaphorically of course.
Emails are for doing from the comfort of my battered old armchair, a gift from the tip, in front of my Morso.
I prefer to spend my money on winter tyres.

How easy is it to transfer my contacts from a Nokia 6303 (I think) to a Motorola Defy.

Two methods I can think of:-

Copy all contacts on the Nokia to the SIM, then stick the SIM in the Motorola and copy from SIM to the phone. Any contact with more than one phone number or an email address will appear as multiple contacts because SIMs can still only associate one number with each contact IIRC.

Use a PC with outlook or similar, copy all contacts from the Nokia to Outlook, then connect the Motorola and copy the contacts from Outlook to the Motorola. This should keep all contacts with multiple numbers etc. intact.

copy contacts to sim card in nokia, take sim to new phone (with old number) and copy sim contacts to phone.

Thanks zero and spam man.

Having changed from a Nokia N70 to an iPhone, I found out that not all the contact info ends up being stored on the SIM when you copy it from the phone to the SIM. Addresses and notes for example. I also had more than one number stored on the phone in one person's contact file, but only one of the numbers stored for that particular contact transferred over to the SIM.

That was back in February and I'm still occasionally noticing missing data that wasn't transferred across and I have to fire up the N70 and manually put it on the iPhone.

I would recommend using Outlook or similar as the 'data bucket' for this reason, although I'm fairly sure when copying via SIM from Nokia to Nokia, at least, all the info was kept, but spread across multiple contacts e.g. I ended up with Angelina Jolie, Angelina Jolie(1), Angelina Jolie(2) and so on.

When transferring between two smartphones with the same memory card format it should be possible to export the contact info to the memory card and then put that in the new phone, this method will also keep multiple numbers for one contact.

Presumably for backwards compatibility reasons, the storage capacity and format of a SIM card is very very limited by today's standards.
