I remember goingt on a Cloride battery course when I was around 22 yrs old so my recollection is sketchy:)

Surely, once the charger is plugged into the cigar lighter it's flattening ( bad grammar, I know) Yes, Discharging further, the battery that it's trying to charge?

If a woman can work that one out then it must be crap.

One of the thin leads in the pic goes to a mobile phone-like charger which plugs into the mains, the other lead croc clips to the battery.

It doesn't say if it's a 'smart' charger or not.

Problem with one of those, as I discovered, is it won't charge a dead flat battery because the charger needs seven volts or so before it will work.

Howdy ALDI car battery charger - Ted
It is a smart charger, Rob. I have one of these, exactly the same and also a Lidl version.

I use them both all the time, one on the bike and one on the Jowett. They won't work on a flat battery, though.

The battery on the Jowett's under the back seat so I connect to the engine block and the permanent live on the fuse box.....works just fine and dandy !

It just has a normal 13amp plug....not a phone charger thingy.

I expect most users want a charger only to charge the battery if it goes flat, so a stupid charger might be a better option than a smart.

I need to travel from Stamford (Lincs) to Barmouth (North Wales) changing in Birmingham. The return train fare is £62.40.
However, Buying 2 tickets for the journey Stam to Birm, change, Birm to Barmouth only costs £40.50, Perfectly legal and a good saving. May work on any long journey that involves a train change; worth checking.

Mmmm lots of savings here.

Daughter comes home to Northampton from Sheffield for weekend. There's a business/commuter flow on some bits of route so a through ticket south on Friday and north on Monday morn is peak & pricey.

Split the journey as Sheffield to Brum and Brum to Northampton and, provided she avoids leaving New Street b4 09:30 on Monday only the local section is peak. £20 saved.

HD ready = 720 horizontal lines per screen vs Full HD = 1080 lines.

= lower definition.

You'll notice the difference playing Blu-rays.

Also a 42" screen not playing HD looks cack within 10 feet or so.

In this case it is a 1080p TV, so can do full HD, except it has no HD tuner, so the only HD you will get is from a blue ray player connected by HDMI cable. If you dont have one of those you aint getting HD and you certainly aint getting HD over the air. Yes 42 inches of SD Eastenders is going to look cack.

Yes it would.

Where that telly is a bit weak - on paper - is the contrast ratio and brightness figure.

Although that might not make much difference in use.

I'd be concerned about the viewing angles. The achilles' heel of LCDs is that they're only "right" seen from dead straight ahead or close to it.
With the cheaper panels, "close to it" can be as little as 20 degrees off axis. Fine if you have the thing at one end of a room, but useless if placed against the long wall.

If you need to be able to see it from an angle, a plasma panel is the better option than a cheap LCD.

42" HD tv at Aldi - Focusless
>> With the cheaper panels, "close to it" can be as little as 20 degrees off

Our old LCD with the rubbish contrast ratio (see above), which was the cheapest I could find at the time, still has a viewing angle of 176 degress H and V. Presumably that means up to 88 degrees off axis. Are modern TVs generally worse then?

 42" HD tv at Aldi - -
>> Our old LCD with the rubbish contrast ratio

One the reasons we bought our Sony Bravia LCD was that you can see the picture in perfect clarity so long as you can physically see the screen.
I understood LCD was the answer to this and better than plasma, so i too ask has something changed?

£199 32" LCD TV on ebuyer also has 178 degree viewing angle
www.ebuyer.com/288354-dgm-32in-lcd-hdtv-ltv-3289w

BTW that one really is a bit naughty 'DGM 32in LCD HDTV' with a resolution of 1366x768. I think the manufacturer is using HD to mean 'hard disk' which it hasn't got but it offers 'PVR via USB HDD'. But the advert mentions 'perfect introduction to 32 inch, High Definition TV'.

42" HD tv at Aldi - Focusless
I suppose the fact it states a good viewing angle doesn't necessarily mean it's watchable at that angle, or does it? How do they measure it?

Ours seems ok at pretty wide angles.

42" HD tv at Aldi - Zero

>> But if you got an HD PVR, which would be a logical purchase, presumably that

Yes it would, but that is not a logical purchase for someone who buys cheap teles. And its more to do with the advertising of the TV itself, I bet at least 50% of those buying this don't realise it wont get HD off air as it stands.

42" HD tv at Aldi - Focusless

That's what we'll probably be doing, eventually. Or they could just get an HD box for £40. And to be fair, there are lots of 'Full HD' rather than just 'HD ready' TVs that don't come with HD tuners - see the Argos catalogue.

Looking at the TV details in the link, it says 'Pause and record Freeview channels via USB'. Perhaps the box has a similar facility.

Yes, would come in handy if you plugged the box into a telly which did not have a USB socket.

As I understand it, not all USB sockets on tellys allow recording.

Some just let you view content from a memory stick or USB drive.

I wondered if that might be the sole purpose of the one on the box, but the fact that it is on the front of the box and mentioned in the feature list implies it ought to do more than that (you would hope).

EDIT: what does it say under the socket in the picture? can't make it out

How to get 20% off any ASDA bill.

First you need to spend £40 on 8 or more items (not clothes or vouchers ).. and get a £5 voucher off with their price match.

Second choose one large priced item which is already discounted - but also discounted at Tesco or Waitrose or Sainsbury..

See www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ for prices.

Then when you price match it, your bill will not be 10% cheaper as advertised and you will get the difference as a voucher for money off - about £3.50..

(Bombay Sapphire gin is my big item.. discounted to £20 per litre everywhere)

This means when you enter in your receipt details , you get £5 (for spending £40) plus the 10% off (£3.50 to £4) totalling around £9 - on a £40 shop.

You can present BOTH vouchers for your next shop over £40.. We did today - no problems.

We also split our shop into two trolleys - each of £40 to maximise our £5 discounts...although only one can be used against each £40 shop.

20% off a grocery shop every week is desirable...

Been doing this for a couple of weeks now - scheme has been going on longer I think but I hadn't cottoned on that it was an easy way to save £5+.

Just done it for couple of receipts - another 2 £5 vouchers (for doing the 10% challenge) and vouchers for £2+ (shopping wasn't 10% cheaper than all competitors), without buying anything in particular.

Shop on Saturday mornings, out of there by 7:45, so it's not too painful :)

None taken, don't worry. We actually have a Waitrose nearby which we use when we need the odd thing at short notice and can't be bothered going the extra mile(s) to Asda. And they do have some nice things in there.

The problem with Waitrose is not their prices per-se, but the huge range of very nice food that tempts you to spend more than you planned to.

If you go in for a list of stuff, and stick to it, they are actually very competitive price-wise. The own brand stuff is also consistently very good, unlike many of the other supermarkets.

Never go to Waitrose when you're feeling hungry :-)

We normally shop at Asda....and why not ?

Swm wanted some stuff for a special Chinese meal she was erecting, we had already tried Asda with no luck. We took the 6/7 mile trip to Waitrose, they had nowt either and the rest of the stock seemed pricey. Catering for the area they were in, I suppose.

We fixed a day to go to the Wing Yip supermarket in North Manchester but we called in at Lidl before then and they had the special rice wine she'd been after. Lidl really have some great stuff.
