A bit specific this list.
A good "value" album. By that I mean one where a large proportion of the tracks are good, or great - Expressed as a percentage.
My nomination is
Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
11 tracks, 9 excelent, 81%
Compilations and "Best of's" excluded. And "concept" albums that are just one track! Must have more than 5 tracks.
Crime of the century by Supertramp in at 75%
Tapestry by Carole King comes third at 63%
|
I would have to rate Wednesday Morning 3:00am by Simon and Garfunkel, most songs on that album are brilliant.
|
"Get Lucky" - Mark Knoffler - brilliant!
"Levelling the land" - The Levellers - excellent!
|
yeah yeah you two but what percentage, This is a "value" thread.

Notice I prefer the newer stuff.
The Wall was the 1st Floyd album I got, currently on my fourth copy (wore them out!) but now listen to music on the PC mostly.
I have a 12inch of 'when the tigers broke free' that is marked as coming from the forthcoming album the Final Cut.
It of course doesn't appear on that album.....
I also like most of the solo albums from the Floyd members, and I don't really have a favourite from the band.
|
>>Notice I prefer the newer stuff<<
Yes, I like Pipers - all their early stuff, Dark Side etc., I've never seen Final Cut as being PF really, stupid I know, perhaps it's just a momentary lapse of reason, I don't know, but I'll be having another slice of Final Cut tonight
and will report back mañana.
BTW, have you read Nick Masons Inside Out book?

>>>> have a 12inch of 'when the tigers broke free' that is marked as coming from the forthcoming album the Final Cut.

I thought when the Tigers Broke Free was the track that did not appear on The Final Cut. It related to how Roger Waters dad was killed and the Final Cut was all about war and the futility of war, but I am no expert and am happy to be corrected.
It is probably worth something!?
|
>>I thought when the Tigers Broke Free was the track that did not appear on The Final Cut<<
That's right, as s/tony said, and it's not on my CD.

Thumbs up!
I've got some pretty weird stuff from 'the old days', I still enjoy listening to it - even more so now in a way,
A CD called Liquid acrobat as regards the air by the incredible string band = 100%
I've also got a compilation CD called back to the 60's which still gives me as much pleasure as it did when I bought it in the late 70's,
Another one from the days of pot & acid is a wishbone ash CD, no title, just a wishbone on the front cover,
I only listen to 50% of that CD mainly, but that 50% is like 200%, man.

Some high-value favourites in approximate chronological order, and without confirming track counts:
Machine Head (1972) by Deep Purple
6/7, or 7/8 if you get the 25th anniversary remaster with the delicious slow blues When a Blind Man Cries.
Out of the Blue (1977) and Time (1981) by ELO
Can I give OOTB extra points for the magnificent Concerto for a Rainy day? And Time is simply my favourite of all: 15/17 and 12/13 respectively.
Stones in the Road (1994) by Mary Chapin Carpenter
Still moves me after all these years: 11/13
Black Holes and Revelations (2006) by Muse
Mad but great fun, with some tremendous riffing. One shocker but the rest very solid: 11/12
Sam's Town (2006) by the Killers
An old-school proper album that you listen to from start to finish: 11/13
|
3 albums I can play without even thinking about hitting the skip button:
New Adventures in HiFi (1996) by REM 100%
Playing the Angel (2005) by Depeche Mode 100%
Heligoland (2009) by Massive Attack 100%

The Liberty of Norton Folgate by Madness
90%, like nothing they have done before and yet so familiar!
|
A few more I meant to include the first time:
Guitar Town (1986) by Steve Earle
An astonishingly confident and complete first album that still sounds fresh and punchy today: 9/10
and El Corazon (1997) also by Steve Earle
More mature, more reflective and taking in a wider range of styles, but just as satisfying. 10/12
Heaven and Hell (1980) by Black Sabbath
Doom metal riffing and Geezer's peerless bass playing met some surprising melodies when Sabbath fired Ozzy and hired a singer who could actually sing. 7/8.
Blizzard of Ozz (1981) by Ozzy Osbourne shows that the split was good for both parties: 7/9
And a sentimental choice: Vigilante (1986) by Magnum
The one really complete album from a solid but underachieving rock band. Glossy 80s production done really well by Roger Taylor, and any beardy prog tendencies kept firmly in check: 8/9
Somehow Floyd passed me by at a crucial time, but I keep meaning to try them out. I have - and enjoy - DSotM but what should I try next?
|
Well!
Who would have thought WdeB was a Magnum fan:)
I saw them at the De Montfort hall in Leicester in the early 80's and I totally agree with your sentiments...along with Saxon.

I've always had a soft spot for Magnum, saw them live several times in the early/mid 80s, to this day I think they play really good melodic metal. I do recall they always used to play a really short set, under an hour most times. I must go and 'score' Chase the Dragon' now :-)

I would say for a full album, move forward in time, so 'Wish You Were Here'.
As I say earlier, the genre changed over time, the earlier stuff was psychedelic, which may not be your taste.
Tell you what - have a look on Youtube, search using the list of albums/tracks I posted at Zero's request. and see what you like.
Personally, I like 99% of their stuff, but as I already said. the later stuff (IMHO) is better.
The other thing is, there is a lot going on in the (later) tracks, and you can listen many times, and hear different things each time.. (The Wall is the best example of that.)
Right... Amongst out Floyd fans, hands up who understood 'The Wall' BEFORE watching the movie?
You HAVE seen the movie haven't you?????

I'll put my hands up to that s/tony ... I didn't understand 2001 A Space Odyssey either, but still enjoyed it.
Wifey bought me The Wall on VHS over 20 years ago.

Agree absolutely with your choice and, in my case, would add Too Low For Zero by Elton John - IIRC nine of the 14 tracks were hits as singles.

OK, I see it now – when the final cut was made in 83, I was a mobile car engine tuner and so all my time was taken up with running a small business,
Wifeys friend gave me the Pink Floyd CD’s that I didn’t have just a few years ago and I thought at the time that final cut wasn’t the Pink Floyd that I knew (and luved)
As with the “is my car Japanese” thread – when is Pink Floyd not Pink Floyd?
Rick Wright wasn’t in the group when final cut was made but many other musicians were, Waters wrote and composed every song, and it’s the last of the groups records to include him in the line up, even ole Nick didn’t play the drums on one track, plus Waters & Gilmore were at ‘loggerheads’ over the album all through the recording stage, and the theme of the album mostly stems from Rogers feelings about war and his Father getting killed in WW2 when Roger was just 5 months old,
Anyway – I like the CD the more I listen to it (except track 11 not now john) I also go along with Rogers anti-war-futile-loss-of-life sentiments and so I’ll be playing the CD mucho.
|
Led Zeppelin 1 - 100%
Evanescence - Fallen - 100%
When a blind man cries, probably my favourite Purple track
Rumours yep,
|
>>>and so I’ll be playing the CD mucho.
It is a very depressing album Dog, even though it is a work of genius.
Don't listen alone too much or you might just end up in the Fletcher Memorial Home!
;-)
|
Rush:
2112 (1976) 100%
Permanent Waves (1980) 100%
Moving Pictures (1981) 100%
The other bazillion albums are 80-90%
|
>>It is a very depressing album Dog, even though it is a work of genius<<
I don't mind a bit of depressing now and again zippy - it's all part of life's rich tapestry you see, sort of gives a balance to life, like, puts things into perspective, as it were.
Not too much of it mind :-)

The thing with The Floyd is, their music changes immensely over the years, But, there is a common story that runs though most of the albums..... (or is it just me that see's it?)
|
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) 100%
I bought the vinyl LP in 1987, having succumbed to the marketing hype over the lyric "It was 20 years ago today".
Not many other albums have been completely listenable in recent times, except:
Katy B - Katy On A Mission (2010) 58%
David Guetta - One More Love (2009) 50%
I tend to listen my own compilations more than albums by individual artists. I do like my music, just not the same music that most other forum members here would listen to :)
I don't possess any form of mp3 player other than my PC, but do listen to (watch? stream?) music online both on the PC and on my phone.

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like, it's got a basket, a bell that rings, and things that make it look good,
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.
OK, I've taken my Largactil and those blue & cream capsules now, so, yes - there would be a common theme running through Pink Floyds albums ... Roger Waters!
According to Wifeys friend, he's a very difficult person to work with, and always wants things his own way, and that is the reason for the bust up with Rick Wright, shame really. but it happens with sooo many groups (or bands as you call them) understandable really I suppose when you have say 4 hairy assed geezers trying to strut their stuff,
like the Beatles, Cream, etc., etc., etc.
Funny ole life, as Laurie used to say :)

Floyd- Dark Side
Led Zep- Physical Graffiti
Metallica- Master of Puppets
AC/DC- Highway to Hell
Pearl Jam- Ten

As they've just announced they're splitting up:
REM - Fables of the Reconstruction; 82% (9/11)
One of their earlier ones, when Andy Kershaw was trying to get them noticed in this country. Bought a couple of albums after that but they didn't grab me.

Nice choice Focus. Just listened to it for the first time in about 10 years.
REM were considered a band for the more discerning student and I remember listening to it when it first came out which, frighteningly, was 26 years ago.
|
Agree with Violator by Depeche Mode, all killer no filler. Would add Blue Lines and Protection by Massive Attack. On a slightly different note, something I return to often and am always struck by its consistent excellence is High Land Hard Rain by Aztec Camera.
More recently released is Chateau Revenge by Silver Seas which I'm sure many people on here would like. Not a bad song on it.
|
I'll check out Silver Seas if you check Smoove and Turrell's 'Antique soul'. A 100% CD.
|
Smoove & Turrell came across my radar thanks to the Word magazine and I never got round to checking them out in more detail so thanks for the reminder.
