 Support Car4play! - car4play
- well sort of.

Next week I shall hopefully be going on a trip up Kilimanjaro with a bunch of other guys in aid of charity and part of my delayed mid life crisis.
I know you all enjoy hanging out here and are eagerly awaiting a long overdue redecoration, but if you really value your site here could I ask (rather cheekily and with no emotional arm-twisting - not ) that :

1) you pray that I return safely. For those that don't pray, do whatever else you do in those circumstances! That is if you want this site to go on. (mmm how does your arm feel now? lol)

2) you make a donation to my Just Giving page I put together a couple of days ago. All the dosh raised goes straight to the charity I am supporting which is the same as the one organising the trip - Rock UK.

They are a charity that helps disadvantaged kids get out doing outdoor activities, building confidence and leadership etc. I did toy with the idea of supporting other charities such as Macmillan Cancer Relief, Alzheimers Soc, Motor Neuron etc. Funny enough searching JustGiving for trips to Kili in September gives around 5 groups doing just that. So the closer to home Rock UK charity sounded like a better bet for me.

So please visit
www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Khoo

and any contributions will be gratefully received.

PS: Of course this will be ideal blue sky time to brainstorm and clarify the ideas I have for this site, though the slight lack of oxygen to my brain at 19,000 ft might have the opposite effect!

I think you will find that the lower oxygen levels at that altitude means your brain will be doing not much storming.
 Support Car4play! - car4play
Well this is true. I have just got some Diamox which can helps with Acute Mountain Sickness. Side effect is that it makes you want to pee on every bush you pass!

Also just to say that I have funded this myself, so any donations go completely to charity and don't fund me!

Hats off to that man! I mean SK - but as it happens I have also just donated via JustGiving to the son of a friend who is crossing India with some mates in a tuk-tuk (motoring link!) for charity. However, I'm delighted to be able to add my support.

We keep hearing hints about the long-overdue redecoration of Car4play - or is it the construction of a driveway? Hm...

Can I just say a very big thank you to all of you who have generously supported me in this venture by donating to charity. (www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Khoo ).

I shall be boarding a plane there in less than 48hrs and start the climb on Sunday morning. How scary is that!

Dony worry, flying is perfectly safe, many people do it daily, and not many die.

I see that Bear Grylls is one of the ambassadors for RockUK.

Off in a few hours. Some of the others are already there!

The cat announcing he's going away could be seen as an invitation to the mice to play.

Dave (LEDFoot), Emma and Mark here should keep the traps stocked with cheese.

.. not to mention our lovely Mods.

Incidentally in the hall of fame of my most generous sponsors are:

- Avensys networks who donated a massive £500 to RockUK. They have provide our server internet connectivity for the last 11 years.
- MD of honestjohn.co.uk - Nova
- HJ himself who got us to £1000 total!

.. and of course some of you here who have given generously out of your own pockets.

A big thank you.

On one of the Top Gear specials (Bolivia) where they had 4x4 vehicles, Clarkson mentioned that taking Viagra helps to prevent high altitude pulmonary edema.

Tests done on cyclists showed and improvement in performance, at altitude, of between 0% and 45%, and was attributed to the improved performance of the heart.

Well I made it to the top and have now made it back!

I can honestly say it was the most physically and mentally exhausting day of my life.

Summit day: Up at 11pm, leave at midnight, 7-8 hours climb to the crater rim (Gilman's - feeling quite dead already), 3 hour round trip to the summit (Uhuru point - completely shattered now), then back down to Kibo hut at 4660m (sliding down the scree and shredding one's gaiters!), one hour rest and lunch, then 3 hour walk to the 3500m camp.

I knew that altitude would make simple things exhausting, but not THAT exhausting.

None of us who did it in the group would do it again. Out of the 13, 2 didn't make it to the rim and one didn't make the summit.
It was quite crowded and another team of 35 supporting Macmillan Cancer were there on the same route. 19 of them made it to the top. Some were seen coming down looking like ghosts.

Anyway, it was good to have done it and supported RockUK charity.
A big thanks to all of you who have supported in one way or another. If you are still feeling like it you can still make a donation on my sponsorship page where everything will go to charity.

I was just wondering what was happening. Well done for completing your assignment!

You were going to do a major re-vamp of c4p, or something like that, remember?
 Support Car4play! - car4play
Oh yes, now I remember. ;-)

As an interesting follow up - just read this in the Mail:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2043193/Alistair-Cook-climbed-Kilimanjaro-celebrate-70th-birthday-drops-dead.html

We also did a training run up Snowdon too.
One of our guys was 64 and made it up Kili ok.
I totally appreciate that if one's heart isn't up to it, the sheer exhaustion could kill you. Still sad for his family though.
 Support Car4play! - Dog
He looks half dead in the Mail's photo - at least he died happy and doing what he loved.
 Support Car4play! - CGNorwich
"at least he died happy and doing what he loved."

A lot to be said for that. His family will have good memories of him too. Better than watch someone decline for years in a nursing home.
