 Shower rod for a long bathroom - L'escargot
Because the washbasin is situated at the end of the bath, our bathroom is much longer than the bath and this is making it difficult to find a straight shower rod of sufficient length. I wondered whether it would be possible to use two telescopic rods with the end of one joined (spigoted) to the end of the other. We'd choose the lightest shower curtain we could find. The bathroom is 2.86 metres (113") long. I want to avoid using an L-shaped rod which requires a ceiling support.

Any thoughts on, or experience of, this situation?

Would a length of chrome plated 15mm or 22mm copper plumbing (or gas) pipe with chrome end mountings for wardrobe rails work? I used this method once and recessed the ends into the wall for extra support.

B&Q sell chrome rods as handrails for stairs, and I think they go up to about 12ft all in one piece.

Would need some fairly heavy duty mounts at either end, but the rod would certainly be sturdy enough to do the job, and chrome goes with almost anything in a bathroom.

2.8m is quite long. Copper can bend so easily if someone happened to put any weight on it, good shower curtain rails are usually stainless steel.

Have you thought about a bath screen?

Anyway if you do want a curtain without a ceiling fixed rail Argos/Homebase are your friends. A shower curtain hanging system that's a 3m long adjustable stainless steel cable with neat end fixings for only £15. It scores 4.6 out of 5 from 40 review on Argos.

Or have you thought about a bathroom roller blind. They are even available so you join two two together in an L configuration. A lot more expensive £70 -£100.

At the moment we have an Eastbrook "Biava" Fold-Away screen, but we don't like it. It's neat, but flimsy.

It looks ideal, so I've reserved one online from Argos. The only thing I need to know now is how far (inwards or outwards) should the cable be from the inner edge of the bath to ensure that the shower curtain hangs neatly when in use?

Along the line of the bath edge or just inside I guess.

My cousin's holiday cottage has an L-shaped shower curtain which is set too near to where you stand and as soon as you're wet it attaches itself to you like a giant condom... most unpleasant.
