Specifically their assault rifles - the usual suspects rear their heads - plenty of AK47 - but I've also spotted FN rilfes (Similar to the old British Army SLR) - prompted by a mis-captioned photo in our favourite online paper, I wonder....
Did NATO supply weapons to the rebels or where these ex-government sort of looted stock

Answered my own question through Wiki - looks like Libya had official use of the FN rifle...

Most enjoyable the 7.62 SLR. Much more fun than the Lee Enfield .303

And in the right hands, a better tool than the current SA80, at least before the latter had a considerable overhaul to improve its reliability.
Neither are a patch on the M-16 though IMO.

The M16 had its share of troubles as well, ironically now made by a company owned by the FN people.

Didn't one side benefit from up to date air and missile support, doubt a few Lee Enfield .303's would have made much difference.
Or am i thinking of another oil rich country who's leadership the west decided to change?

I watched a (rebel) tank being transported by a tank transporter on BBC this am and large scale rocket launching (Katusha type) - so some of the regular army has defected.. Don't see much footage of that but I suspect it is more significant than the News and the MOD would like us to know..

Most of the decent weapons were never in the hands of the 'regular army' to begin with. In fear of a coup, Gaddafi had another army loyal to him that consisted of a lot mercenaries. The 'regular' army was not even trained the same. Same goes for who controlled the air force.

Quite a bit of help was given to the rebels, a lot fronted through Qatar, look for the Qatari flags on the news. No doubt we give them help I think mainly it was the French funding it.
