The usual difficult decision - it always happens when I go abroad.

Off to Mallorca soon. Two people, ten days, B & B accommodation. We are taking cash to pay for evening meals plus a snack lunch, together with a coffee in the mornings and a beer or whatever in the afternoons. You know the kind of thing. Our tastes are not grand or extravagant in any way. We walk and take photos, sunbathe a bit, maybe pop into a museum or take a scenic rail trip.

The trouble is - HOW MUCH CASH?

I gather Mallorca prices are pretty close to UK's - is that right? How much would you take?

Are you intending to buy all your Euros in the UK and take the lot with you?

Apart from rip off exchange rates it seems pretty risky to carry hundreds (?) even split between the two of you. Can you get a credit or debit card with nil charges and a nil or low loading on conversion for use abroad? Nationwide used to be recomended and Santander's Zero card s pretty good.

Martin's Money Tips page also has reccomendations for pre loaded payment cards. The only problem we had with ours (Travelex) was that it was consistently refused for tolls on the autoroute.

does he still send out weekly emails? - I haven`t had one for about a month now!

Yes - we do take euros with us and I usually get a good rate from somewhere like ICE at Waterloo Station, having searched the Travelmoney comparison site linked from MoneySavingExpert.com, aka Martin's Money Tips.

We don't usually take a huge amount anyway (as I said before, our tastes are simple) and split it between us, carrying it in money belts. I went off using credit cards abroad some time ago, finding that there were enough places not accepting them (e.g. smaller Greek restaurants) to make life difficult - and you have to carry some cash anyway. I realise that Martin's Money Tips reckons plastic is cheapest.

I don't know why Devonite's not getting his e-mails - I get one every week.

Not been to Mallorca for about 3 years - we really like it, but went 3 or 4 times in a row so have decided to leave it for a bit. The north of the island is very pretty and many dismiss the whole island on the basis of their image of palma nova.

I dont recall it being very cheap when we went, and they may be area related, but for a couple I would have thought you needed to allow £15 for lunch and 25 plus for an evening meal depending on what you want / bottle of wine etc. Its a really wide thing because the type of establishment and your taste wil make a big difference

Most Spanish caffs & restaurants offer a lunchtime "menu del dia" for about 7 to 8 € upwards.
Even on the paseo (main promenade) in Marbella they do decent menus del dia for around 8 €.
If you can find an authentic, up-country "venta" where the locals go for Sunday lunch you may fill your boots for not a lot!

Here is the web-site of a particularly good traditional venta north of Malaga.
Not much use for Mallorca, I know, but if any of you are ever around that area I can wholeheartedly give it my personal recommendation.

Be careful where you get your Euros from - there was a recent TV program about people getting in to all sorts of trouble (including prison) because they'd innocently bought fake Euros.

When are you going FP? I'm dropping the ex wife and kids off at Ringway at 3.30 tomorrow morning for their flight there.

Mug? Me? Yes, but I do get a child free weekend with the Belgian GP.

Out Tuesday 30th August, back Friday 9th September.

Very civilised of you to do the taxi-run. I presume you are a motor-racing enthusiast and are not conducting a relationship with a doctor.

RP it's often called Ringway though isn't it :-) It was initially called Ringway - 'cos that's where it is.

Oh I know that - just using the old name tickled me !

There's a certain romance to the old aerodrome names.

Elmdon; Castle Donington; Woolsington; Speke; Lulsgate; Rhoose; Middleton St George and Eastleigh to name but a few.

Leeds Bradford was known locally as Yeadon Airport well into the seventies.

>> Rhoose

That brings back memories too for me (being from that vicinity..ish).

Worked at bmi offices at Castle Donington a bit too. Old impressive buildings. The server room gave me a chest infection though!

I suspect a DH Dragon would be comfier than whatever Thomsonfly cram them into. I shall be in bed before they get through security (regrettably not with the Belgian GP...)
