There are ok and good tv progammes but very few if any Greats....

I was recommended to "Blood and Sands", months ago and have now seen the series twice, and now the Prequel, "Gods of the Arena" - the acting , dialogue, action and daily routines of Romans( Ok the gratutitous sex and violence) and the storyline based loosely on the story of Spartacus, creates absorbing TV

Yeah seen both series. Kind of Roman history by Sam Pekinpah meets Quentin Tarantino.

There are greats, real greats. I have been watching (missed them the first time round) Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Smileys People. What fabulous Television. And I have also been watching "Special Branch" series 3 and 4 from the 70s.

Colditz the BBC series has to rank there...watching the box set at the moment.

Sorry but would have to disagree pretty strongly with that. The first series was OK but it then became a formulaic drama set in a prison camp with absolutely no credibility. Tried watching the re-runs on TV - unwatchable tosh with unbelievably poor production standards.

Alas I have to agree with the "boi"

I saw that Colditz was being re-run on Freeview, and with fond memories i settled down to watch it. Clearly memory is a kind healer because I found it exactly as CGN states. Even by the standards of the time.

It was a severe disappointment and thy got dumped from the PVR

When the Boat Comes In

Seriously, well acted, superb scripts.

Quite like the Tudors at the moment, but get embarrassed about the rumpy pumpy bits if the kids are about ;-)

Morse and Lewis and the Sweeny is being re run on ITV4

Current:

The Tudors - Interestingly produced by a Canadian broadcasting company, but outstanding acting and production throughout.
Luther - A Excellent Series IMO
Top Gear - I'm sorry but it is good - even if you just base it on worldwide sales.

Classic:

Only Fools and Horses - Genius
Father Ted - Genius
Blackadder - Genius
Minder - Brilliant
The professionals - I really love this

Underrated
The Detectives - Spin of series of Jasper Carrots Sketch series. this was just brilliant.

To name but a few

Funny old world isn't it when we are quite relaxed about letting our children watch actors graphically playing people killing one another, blowing them up, shooting them or chopping them to pieces but we get embarrassed about the same actors portraying people having sex which in the main is a far more sociable, normal and ultimately acceptable activity. Not saying my attitudes are really any different but it is a bit odd when you stop for a moment and think about it.

s'funny you should say that Humph. Having seen footage of the recent riots on almost every channel, I then happened to catch the 'advertising' clip of an upcoming Eastenders episode and lo and behold it features two female characters having a right go at each other with all the verbal abuse and fists and hair flying (a typical half hour episode I gather).

I sometimes wonder where we went wrong in society when we show contempt and horror at the scenes which took place in our cities and yet we can be shown the same level of violence on primetime TV which kids can watch and its called 'entertainment'.

Life on Mars - refused by Channel 4 (what do they know ?) - absolutely near perfect programme, brilliant scripts, excellent characters....nice cars !

Lewis is glossy Sunday night tosh. Mrs Lewis must have been livid when Robbie got the promotion, because she knew he wasn't tormented enough for the title role, so it could only be a matter of time until she was run over by a passing ice cream van.

Doesn't stop Mrs Beest and me watching it for a giggle, of course. Lewis adopted Morse's foot-waggling funny walk, and now Hathaway has caught it from him. And there was a priceless scene at the end of an episode in the most recent series had Lewis and Hathaway in a pub garden with a spectacular sunset behind them - and their long shadows stretching away from the camera towards it.

Somehow The Sopranos passed us by at the time. We're working through the boxes now and being more and more impressed. It's all about believable characters, even if they live in a world I'm very glad not to inhabit.

Don't watch a lot of TV, and most modern offerings pass us by as they are undiluted drivel, home grown being too PC by far to be credible, soaps have reached an all time low and are unwatchable.

Agree about Tinker tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People, i have them both, some of the best television ever made.
Blott On The Lanscape is an all time great romp, worth buying.

US made series have come on in leaps and bounds, not constrained by PC in the same way ours are.
Two And A Half Men is really very funny, doubt it will be the same without Charlie but we'll see.
The Wire was excellent.
The Killing, currently showing on Channel 4, is brilliant...last one of this story i think this Thursday, well our series link button couldn't find any more.
