 Inspection light. - R.P.
My garage is windowless and has a high ceiling. The place is lit by two strip lights. Close work on the bikes is difficult and at the moment I'm using an old Ikea halogen angle poise thing - which isn't ideal.

Any recommendations for an inspection lamp, don't particularly want a re-chargable one (unlikely to be charged when needed etc...), don't want a ciggie lighter one either. So it seems to be mains power...

I've an old inspection lamp with a low energy bulb fitted. I was initially cautious, because I thought it may be susceptible to strobe effect like fluorescent tubes, however NC or Screwloose convinced me it wouldn't be a problem, and it hasn't.

The old filament bulbs don't last as long when you drop the blasted thing!

60 W bulbs being phased out next month - not sure about heavy duty ones.

A cheap solution would be a (cheap, obviously) head-light as used by walkers.

Mine was about £3 from Tesco or ASDA.

Quite handy for arriving/departing from the caravan in the darker months because you have both hands free for carrying stuff, using keys and so on.

We were never keen on mains power in a workshop setting - the oil and grease rots the cable - not to mention hands which were often wet.

Favourite lamp was a 12v one with two crocodile clips, clamped either to the car's battery, or one of a handful of old batteries which were always knocking around.

I think the lamp took a 21w brake light bulb - plenty bright enough.

A linear light source is much better (ie Fl tube or length of LEDS) as it reduces the shadows when working.

Be very wary of mains powered inspection lamps when working in a (wet!) pit - both the explosion and electrocution risks. Similarly a 12v bulb is not explosion proof!

I was thinking more of a free-standing one, I have very handy decorating stand which doubles as a mini work bench, the angle lamp sits on this at the moment (also convenient for computer - web guides) so a proper light should ideally sit on this......

Dunno if they're any good (I mean the lights, I know Toolstation are OK) but the Toolstation equivalent is very cheap:-
