obtaining a web domain - wotspur

I logged on to one site and found the domain sites that I wanted and was wondering which were the most important ones to buy ? Becasue this site had about 10 available and seemed to cost between 19.99 and 49.99 Per year - I was a bit surprised that it was a rental system -, does that mean the cost could increase, depending on how successful or not it is ? - I'm sure someone on here has obtained their own ones,
so what is there to prevent me from buying say, Tesco.com (apart from knowing when the year ends and the cost ??

Because Tesco can renew their domain registration about one month before it expires. You could only register it once it had fully expired.

There have been a few cases over the years where large organiations have neglected to renew their domain only to find that somone else had snapped it up and held the orginal owner to ransome.

The prices you quote seem quite high unless they include both the domain registration and the hosting.

I have a couple but they are only 2 or 3 £ a year. They are renewed automatically on Direct Debit ( 1and1.co.uk ).

Does seem high. Don't pay more than £5 / year, all in, for each domain.

Think twice about what details you supply for whois lookups when registering - some people supply a home address but don't realise this address is on the web for anyone to see (type "whois whatever-example.com" for an idea). Might not be an issue of course, depends on the domain and what it's for.

The cost could increase, but not by how successful your site is and is unlikely to move more than pennies. If your registrar tries it on, it's dead easy to change to another.

EDIT: An example of the address thing:

Buy from Namesco. Brilliant company for hosting too. Recommended.

I have been using UK2.net for about 8 years (about 10 domain names) - only one minor problem on billing in that time, and it was sorted out within 24 hrs. Not the cheapest but the uptime has been so close to 100% that I cannot fault them.

If they ever forgot to renew (they wont) and you nabbed the name Tesco, they would have you in court faster than you can blink for

1/Trademark infringement
2/Intent to deceive
3/Preventing them lawfully trading.

All of which they can prove because they were trading as Tesco long before you thought of the idea. You would need deep wallets, about a million a day for each day you held the domain name.

The idea of "internet ransom" was effectively killed about 5 years ago,

...The idea of "internet ransom" was effectively killed about 5 years ago...

Microsoft forgot to renew 'hotmail' a few years ago.

I think the guy who registered it gave it back to them, possibly because he knew a ransom wouldn't work.

Googling the obvious produces several versions of the story.
