if it`an Alkaline battery try a drop of vinegar on a Q-tip or Cotton bud then a rub with one with WD 40 or suchlike on.

Can't remember suffering a battery leaking for 20 years or so. I'd put it down to the demise of zinc carbon batteries, which seemed to be specifically designed to leave a layer of white goo inside any piece of electrical equipment within a month of being installed.

At work we have numerous portable equipment that use batteries. Some of the kit is stored for months at a time on shelves until required. Evey so often we get leaky batteries (we mainly use Duracell & Duracell Procell).

Depending on the severity of the leak we use warm soapy water (if we can separate the battery compartment from the electronics) or cotton buds soaked with either iso-prop alcohol or the soapy water. Main thing is not to get the electronics or any moving parts wet.
