The Cleveland force has been a troubled one in recent times, but I had the impression they'd turned the corner.

I covered a trial of some fairly heavy duty drugs dealers from Middlesbrough.

Like so many of their ilk, they are a big noise in their own patch, but mean nothing a few miles up the road.

Jury nobbling was feared, so the trial was held 'out of area' in Durham.

This mean't plenty of away day skiving opportunities for Cleveland CID, and they took full advantage.

Regrettably, their conduct at court left a lot to be desired.

They had an arrogance and swagger about them which did not go down well among the staff.

The court is a comedy of manners, and the way to find favour is to treat the staff - particularly the ladies of a certain age - as princesses.

But the boneheads from Cleveland did just the reverse.

All this took place outside court, but the judge got to hear about it, as good judges do.

So when one of the Cleveland coppers let his mobile phone ring in court, the judge threw him out.

Usual procedure would be to accept an apology and move on.

I imagine the copper concerned is still wondering why he was treated so harshly.

Wait... I think I know this one....

Give a man a uniform and you clothe him for a day.
Teach a man how to make a uniform and he can clothe himself.

What's a plain uniform?

In the world of the uniformed, the plain clothes man looks over-formal.
