What is the furthest North/West/East/South? - RattleandSmoke
You been?

Worldwide my points are:-
West - Dublin
North - Edinburgh
South - Barcelona
East - Berlin.

In terms of UK

West - Newquay
North - Edinburgh
South - Newquay
East - Wisbech or possibly parts of East London.

I have been to many places within those points though, I very rarely go abroad as I hate the package holiday type places, but I have been to a lot of major European cities.

I am sure somebody on here will say they have been to both poles :). I tried to get up to the North Pole but once I got past Carlisle it got a bit cold so I gave up.

I am so annoyed I didn't go to Lands End now, I was close to it, but I just didn't have time. It is apart of the country I want to go to again but its so expensive to get there.

North is not cold, providing you don't venture further north of Cheetham Hill :p

Of course though, living in Manchester the city itself warms things up by 2-3c.

I am glad there is nobody on here who hasn't been further north than Watford Gap .... so far

By UK I suppose I was really meaning the British Isles, otherwise you could count places like Gibraltar which gets a bit silly.

That sounds just like John O' Groats, which is not the furthest point north on the mainland, that is Dunnet Head which is nearby. It has derelict WW2 military buildings on it which were part of the Scapa Flow complex.

What is amazing about the UK is how varied it is for a comparatively small collection of islands and how much there is to see. I know Norfolk quite well but there are still villages I've never been too, roads I have never driven down and even pubs I have not visited.

Already said above in my last post, assume I meant British Isles when I said UK.

RJ isn't Newquay further South than Plymouth? If not then I need to change mine, as I have stayed the night there, it was so rough it is how I ended up in Newquay.

Edit just checked on the map, annd Plymouth is about 6 miles further south, so I now need to edit my top post to say the furthest south I have been in the UK is Plymouth or a village called Parr where I had to make a connection.

>> RJ isn't Newquay further South than Plymouth?

I looked at that and thought 'yer wot' but actually it's within a whisker. Too close to call from Google maps - need something with lat/long markings. And as longitude lines converge things are not what they appear on map projections. The most westerly point on the British mainland is not Cornwall but Ardnamurchan in NW Scotland.
 What is the furthest North/West/East/South? - rtj70
I looked at Google maps and it looks like Plymouth is further south to me... but as said above there's lat/long to consider.

Initially for world places I wasn't going to put Hawaii as furthest south... but it is for me.

Little things I noticed, like the bus stops around Menai where in a bit of a sorry state. The other thing that amazes me is how every bus manages to be at least five minutes late. Do they not think of building delays into the timetables?

I have found the native Welsh people there though to be extremely helpful in the main but have also experienced some resentment against the English or tourists in general.

I keep pointing this out. East/West are different concepts from North/South.

"West" isn't a place, it's a direction. When you think you have got there, you can always go further. There is no "West Pole".

Agree with you Pat. Really anywhere that has lines of hotels lining the waterfront and the beaches are full of sun loungers and those umbrella thingies.

We went to Blackpool a few years ago, it was all I expected of it, dirty, tacky, full of drunken chavs and everywhere seemed to smell of hot chip fat.

Having said that, I hope places like that flourish as people who like that environment for a holiday won't be going to places that I prefer.

Having a grumpy day!

Think I agree with you about Blackpool and Rhyll though having been to them both. If you hate them I would add Great Yarmouth to your list! Cruise is my idea of hell as don't' like idea of being trapped with the same crowd of little Englanders for weeks on end and am also prone to sea sickness. Seems to be the mode of travel for people who don't really like anything foreign.

Ibiza's reputation as the clubbing capital of the world is certainly off putting but actually it is a pretty island, especially in the spring when the flowers are out. Stayed in Santa Eulalia many years back and it is (was?) a very pleasant place to spend a week. Wouldn't cross it off your list!

Blackpool is ok for events, but it is not the place I would choose to holiday otherwise.

Blackpool is what you make it, and it is very easy to avoid all the chav none sense, still a dump though.

I do really like Llandudno though, it feels very different to other British seaside resorts.

It is not a place I am likely to go again, only went early this year because it was stupidly cheap. £30 return on the train (From Manchester!!) and £20 a night in the Travel Lodge. Was a bit rowdy at night, but it is a sea side town you expect that.

I was there yesterday actually, collecting my broken Seamaster from being repaired (don't ask), collecting a water butt stand from B&Q and trying to change a PIN at Bank - but someone had torched the ATM. Plenty of wrinklies about though, it is a nice town - in a way.

It is a seaside town, but the sea is slightly more blue than a lot of Britain places and you have Snowdonia as a back drop.

My cousins all run businesses their, but they get away with it because they have a Welsh surname.

I think it is biggest seaside resort in all of Wales and is in unusual that most the buildings there are all still owned by the Mostyn family, the result is that it is virtually untouched since Victorian times but is also very well maintained.
