Do any forum members have experience of EDF Energy? I've done my homework and their on-line tariff offers me a worthwhile cost saving.
Thanks.

Used them with no problems until they started to gouge prices so switched to EON - 3% cheaper ..
My opinion? Check for price increases and don't sign contracts with penalty clauses..
|
Thanks for your response, madf.
(It seems unusually quiet around here this week!)
|
|
Also with EON, mainly because they came out cheapest for us on the price comparison websites. However their service (answering queries, ease of switching to cheaper tariffs) has also been good.

Agree with Focus's points above..
No hassle at all..
|
I may have jumped the gun this morning, but I have just changed to E.ON Fixed Price 5
which is fixed until 1 July 2013
It didn't look that good, but Scottish power went up recently nearly 20% and British Gas announced their increases this morning, so the fix looks competitive (to me).
Your mileage and opinions may vary.
|
I've never been keen on the idea of fixed prices for energy; I prefer to go with the flow.
EDF seems to be top of the pile for me if the various comparison sites are anything to go by.
|
Been with EDF for a while; changed from EON as they were cheaper at the time.
Big plus point is that their customer service, for me, has been exemplary - answer promptly, and on two occasions have called me back as they were busy, then left me direct dial numbers to a responsible person and their email address to deal with what was just a tariff and payment method change. Said person answered phone and her emails, and called me back again in an hour or so having done what was needed. Also advised me about a tariff I'd missed that was cheaper than the one I'd picked.
No issues at all with them. I'd stay even if they were a tad more money just for their customer service.
YMMV, as they say.

Within the last hour I have just jumped from British gas / edf to a duel fuel deal with Eon.
saved 252 quid PA.
|
>>Big plus point is that their customer service, for me, has been exemplary
That's what I was hoping to hear. My existing supplier has been equally good and that is why I have stayed with them for, perhaps, a little longer than I should have.
Thanks, Crankcase.

>> a duel fuel deal with Eon.
Does that mean the gas and electricity fight with each other?
|
Just an update.
After spending ages waiting for EDF to answer the 'phone, I discussed my requirements opting for one of their on-line tariffs, but as they subsequently sent me the wrong contract I have decided to remain with my existing (very efficient, but not the cheapest) supplier.
|
also updated - Eon price rises of 11.4% for elec and 18.1% for gas from 13 September.
|
|
EDF are slow to answer the phones but at least they're UK based (with one very well spoken call-taker) and the calls are free. They've eventually sorted out the problems we had here eventually.
|
I like EDF... they are very reliable in sending me a yearly cheque (pole farming) for a nice meal out while on our hols.

Rather than starting a new thread,I'll piggy back it onto this one.
British Gas has just sent a letter announcing their price increases.
We currently pay £58 a month by DD and we're in credit by approx £8.
They are saying that the DD will increase to £85 next payment (calculated on the energy we've used over the whole of the last year)
So much for an 18% increase. A quick calulation shows that an increase from £58 to £85 is approx 47%!!! I could understand if we we're in debt to them and they wanted to recoup their losses by increasing the DD, but we're not.
Phoning them to ask why they want to increase our bill by £47 a month met with much the same as the letter stated. If I went over to an on-line paperless billing tarriff then that would reduce it by 6%. They have also agreed to lower the new DD to £76.50 a month, but on the understanding that this would increase if it was incorrectly calculated.
This leads me onto my question, using a price comparison website ( www.energychoices.co.uk ) changing to NPower's Sign Online 23 tarriff comes out as the cheapest recommendation, based on £58 a month with BG, I could save approx £145 by changing over to NPower.
1. What are NPower like as a provider?
2. Are these price comparison websites accurate?
|
>> 2. Are these price comparison websites accurate?
They are as good as the information you put into them (accurate annual consumption, amount paid etc) but given that yes, Used U-Switch and my first DD is as estimated by them.
|
I use price comparison sites. Yes they are accurate.
Do I trust them implicitly?
Nope.
I plug my existing supplier and my proposed new one into a spreadsheet to see if I come up with the same results...
Sometimes ther are 10% differences.. I check and try again.
Becasue price formulas vary, some errors - small - may be inevitable...
|
>>British Gas has just...
My thread is sullied, DD. Shame on you!
|
We are with npower simply because we never switched after buying the house. After 12 months they gave us £100 credit for being with them for 12 months and paying on direct debit.
But we were with British Gas before and you paid the same amount each month. The idea being you paid more over the summer to cover the extra costs for the winter. But they reviewed the usage after the winter and pushed up the monthly payments to cover the increased gas used last winter. And now we're in credit so they've dropped it again!
Dave, when you say it's shot up.... is the £58 the same amount you were paying last summer? What about extra gas used this past winter? Our heating was on a lot and we used a lot of gas.
|
>> Dave, when you say it's shot up.... is the £58 the same amount you were

For a brief period of approx a month we changed over to Southern Electric, but my dad was convinced by BG to go back to them so switched back again. That was just before he died last year. I sorted out his estate and it was initially confusing as to who we were actually with for our gas and electric because of the chopping and changing my dad did. Prior to temp changing to Southern Electric he was paying something like £53 a month to BG, but when he went back to them it was £58 a month by DD. The payment of £58 a month has been the same since last July. In short BG have been getting the same approx payment of somewhere between £53 & £58 a month for the past 2 years, IIRC.
Ironically our electric stayed with Southern Electric when BG poached my dad back. They didn't get him to move the electric across back to them. Turns out we're paying SE less than we were paying BG for our electric.

Been with Npower for about 5 years now and have had no real issues. Currently on Sign online 21 – paperless billing. They give you a £100 discount for every 12 months you are with them. They send you an email every 6 months asking for meter readings. The only issue I would have with them is never give them meter readings on-line as it has never worked for me. I always call them with my readings.
|
I've been with nPower since I bought Iffy Towers about ten years ago, the previous owner was with them and I've not bothered to change.
Online account, paid by direct debit, no problems I'm aware of.
They ask for a meter reading by email, which I assume works because they reply to say they've received it.
Given my experience with insurance companies, I should fire up GoCompare.
But I'm not confident I could easily work out my annual consumption.
|
>> But I'm not confident I could easily work out my annual consumption.
No need to; the details of how much energy you have used during the last 12 months should be noted in your latest bill.
|
Difficult to know quite where you are with comparing prices for energy, at what point are they in their inevitable price increase cycles.
We stick with Ebico and will continue to do so, they are always one of the cheapest anyway, they have simple prices with no standing charges, but most importantly everyone pays the same including those unable to take advantage of budget accounts, even those who have pre pay etc still get the same one price, whereas they usually get higher charges, fair for everyone.
They are the only non profit ethical supplier.
|
I got tired of seeing £billion profits listed for every one of the main energy companies so I've switched over to the Co-op - they have a flat, simple price structure and no confusing discounts/schemes etc that seem to have no effect on the price.
And it turns out they're £10 a month cheaper than British gas for me on Dual Fuel (even with all the BG online 'discounts' etc) so it obviously makes a difference when shareholders aren't involved.
|
Thats new to me the Co-op we bank with them.Dual fuel at the moment with British gas.
Why are there no concessions for having a solar panel on the roof for water etc.Unless there is?

Hmm if I switched my gas to them from British Gas it would cost me 20% more. Cheap for low users they may be, but when you get over 2680 kWh for the year (most people do who have have gas CH) they get to be pretty expensive pretty quickly. Sorry but I have no intention of paying for the privilege of being fair to everyone.
|
>> We stick with Ebico and will continue to do so
Hmmm!
BG have estimated that we'll use 19868.24 kWh in the next 12 months. That's £942.08
Stick the kWh figure into Ebico's calculator and you get £951.29
That's £9.21 more than BG.
It's looking more and more likely that I'll be moving over to NPower.

I can understand changing if you safe a couple of hundred quid. But for the sake of a tenner?
We moved from NPower to dear for us.

They've just announced a 15.7% increase on gas charges and 7.2% on electricity from 1st Oct 2011.

Will wait a day or so for the comparison sites to update and then check again then.

Thanks for that, I will have a look.
Ebico and the Co-op as mentioned by gb and Snakey might be worth investigating, too.

Just fixed my tariff with EDF (the last of the big ones not to raise prices in the latest round) until 2014.
|
I'm on oil here and have been checking out prices www.oilpricewatch.co.uk/public/index.php
I've got just under half a tank, and with 60 bags of Taybrite a'coming, that may? see me through.
If conditions get really bad, I could always take the doors off and burn them like a neighb did in her council flat back in the 50's.
:-D

|
Welcome back, Dog. I was worried that you might have eaten something that didn't agree with you.
|
>>I was worried that you might have eaten something that didn't agree with you.<<
What, like one of the neighbs cats or something :o)
Cheers C/S.
|
Goodbye BG - hello NPower.
BG = £85 a month.
NPower = £62 a month.
Based on BG's forecast of our household using 19800 kWh of gas in the next 12 months.
Plus an added bonus of £50 back after 12 months uninterupted DD with NPower too.
Was told their "sign online 23" & "Go Fix 7" aren't afected by the 15% rise in October.

Their fixed tariff appears to have a huge hike on the daily standing charge.
To my eyes, the best rate, although it is variable, appears to be the Co-op tariff which was set only 4 weeks ago:

I've just fixed with EDF for 3 years, does their price guarantee only extend to their pence per KWh or is the standing charge fixed too?
|
|
Sorry missed this as far as I can see it's the unit price. Had a letter from them yesterday - £44.00 compensation for a missed appointment - 6 weeks free leccy !
|
i changed mine from sse to the co op energy, i was on the fixed tarrif august 2011 with sse and that tarrif will expire end of sept 2011, so with a bit of searching i opted for the co op worked out even cheaper than with sse.
All the big six have increased their prices, veery quick to put up prices but slow to drop them

I was so tired of this whole debate about which supplier is the best. So I decided to use Tower Utility. They did the hardest part, they found the cheapest dual fuel supplier possible so now I don’t have problems with my bills. I highly recommend it especially for lazy people like me who don’t want to or don’t have time for indepth research.
|
>> I decided to use Tower Utility.
Presumably you have no connection with this company?
|
|
I don't know if this has been mentioned already but EON give Tesco Clubcard points. Some inducement: my 5000 kw of electricity and 35000 kw of gas a year earn me enough for a bottle of own brand champagne a year.
|
|
I do. It's super hard to call them but by mail I do.
