Do you manage your ipod? - BobbyG
Over the last couple of weeks I have made an attempt to manage my ipods content.
Up till now, I had always just loaded songs on it and when playing on full shuffle, if I didn't like one I would press next.

I checked for duplicate songs and it threw up 978 songs! So I worked my way through these deleting multiples of the same song.

I had up to 6 versions of the same song, either taken from different albums that I had blindly loaded, or different versions, uncut, live etc.

Now I have also deleted the ones that were called "Track x" with no tags.

Next task is to start going through, especially album tracks that I don't listen to.

However, there is an argument that says just keep all the songs until the thing is full and you need to delete, you never know when someone might ask if you have a certain song?

Or I could make more use of playlists but annoyingly, I realised that when I deleted multiples of the same song, I may have deleted the version that appeared on a specific playlist! Grr

So are you a manager or a "fill it upper" ??

Manage your song library on your pc, not the songs on the Ipod. You shouldn't have duplicates or "track x" without tags to load in the first place.

Yeah sorry, manage it all through itunes and then sync the ipod.
Track x comes up when you load a cd that it can't identify or maybe if the 'net wasn't connected for some reason.

Use a programe to clean up your library. I use"MP3tag". It can auto detect and complete tags on ripped cds. Also find duplicates.

Surely you are never going to fill up your pc's hard drive with music so why not keep everything including different version and delete only true duplicates?

That would depend on how big your hard drive is in relation to your music collection...

I have many different playlists and a 128 Gb Classic iPod. I keep some video on it (mainly old TV that I always fancy watching but never get around to (like Bottom and Frankie Howerd).

Although the iPod size means I don't have to worry too much as there is always something I've not heard fo a bit, I do occasionally swap out playlists. Most of my playlists are based on genre, so I can keep a mixture of different music (and comedy). It helps that I spend too much time tagging anything new and correcting old stuff, as you can manage the library more easily if the tags are correct from the start.

I do tend to keep all different versions of same tracks, as I like to keep albums intact - and with correct track numbers. There is inevitably duplication on the iPod.

Anal, moi? :-(

...Anal, moi?"

Certainly sounds like you think about it a lot.

My total MP3 music collection which will have a few duplicates (complications/best of albums) is only about 30Gb. A lot is what I've had for ages and I add to it when I buy something I like. So easy to keep on a decent size iPod etc.

But when you're looking for music at the gym or whatever, you have to decide on what you want to listen to. Easier to have a smaller selection of music appropriate to the environment I think at times. I have a 16Gb SD in the Android phone and less than half is music.

When I get the Passat CC in October I am thinking of having a few smallish SD cards for music so I can swap them over. I could have one large one but then you have too many albums etc to scroll through and select when driving. And if I keep the Android phone well stocked I can always stream audio (and control the Android phone) via the car's Bluetooth connection.

And this is why I use CDs. I cannot imagine the mess I would get into with an iPod.

I'm slowly loading a couple of thousand CDs in to my newly acquired Brennan JB7....brilliant bit of kit. I'll buy myself a decently sized hard-disk once I've done that to back it up. Best thing ever....

Wait till you have it loaded and try and find them again...

I've already loaded a few (!) - I think around seventy in fact - so far very easy to find them using the remote....the display is big enough to be read from the comfort of one's personal sofa.

"I'm slowly loading a couple of thousand CDs"

I took me a year to do mine, on and off. It's painstaking.

... I could have one large one...

...but then it wouldn't fit in the slot. Less likely to get lost under the seat, though.

I gave this issue much thought, 80gb of music - 40,000 tracks, caused all the same frustrations in the past that others have indicated here.

My solution was thus:

A single (network share) drive installed in the PC, with all my current music loaded into it. All music is loaded into subdirectories(folders) named by artist, then album. Compilations are loaded into another subdirectory Called "compilations" then divided into album name.

That was the consolidation point. New work is load into subdirectory chain headed YYYY/Artist (or compilation) /Album (YYYY is year of loading the new music)

All MP3, all with the tags fully completed. Itunes is then allowed to load this stuff into its library (various libraries - we have three ipod users all with their own IPOD library derived from the base drive with music)

This allows me to control the base music catalogue, the user base controls their own ipod libraries (and knows where to find new music to add to their libraries). It also allows me to find and use the base MP3 data to load to USB sticks (I have a 16gb micro USB stick attached to the car stereo), CDs, has allowed Media player to build its index, and then subsequently used by the TV (using DLNA) to feed the stereo.

Which is why I said, manage the base music, NOT the Itunes index, and certainly not via the IPOD.
