Mrs F has received some jpegs attached to an email. But when she tries to view them in her Hotmail account using the browser on her Desire, it just says 'content not supported'. I can't believe that's right - can any Android users help?

It should support the opening of the JPEG. Has she tried first saving the attachment locally on the phone?

Probably not. Should she need to? I would have thought just clicking on it in the email should be enough to open it, or perhaps offer the option of saving it. Not just display an error message.

Not tried opening an email in a browser and opening a message. I use a mail client. I'll try a quick test for you... Hang on.
|
I tried using my email account's webmail (Yahoo) and the attached JPEG was visible in the email. And I could download to the phone okay too.

Ok, ta. Any idea what's going wrong on Mrs F's phone?
|
Are the JPEG's viewable in a browser on a computer? I would have thought this should just work. Unless for some reason the phone is not recognising them as JPEGs.
|
has she tried viewing them on her PC hotmail account? They could be corrupt.

She's forwarded the email to me, and I can view the pics no problem - in my gmail account they appear automatically at the bottom of the email, and are displayed full size if I click on them.

I get the same problem trying to view jpegs attached to Hotmail emails. I tried to figure out how to download them but that didn't seem to work either.
If I get the jpegs onto the phone another way (say via DropBox) I can view them fine, so I think in my case it is some interaction with Hotmail that is the problem.
I Googled it, and saw that others have had the same problem, but I didn't see any definitive solutions.. Pretty poor show I reckon.

should have got an Eye Phone.

For non technical users, I would agree. A lot of Android users though will have no idea about technology.
I wonder if Focus' wife has security setup on the phone to prevent something needed by Hotmail in a browser working correctly? Have you tried a different browser?

Got to take cost into account as well though.

Not deliberately I shouldn't think.

Any recommendations? I know nothing about Android.

I don't remember you offering to pay us the difference when we discussed this...
Stepson has an Aye Phone - I'll get her to forward the email to him and check it does actually work on that.
Thanks SS.

I know - a bit like free advice I suppose :)

Works on my Android Sony Ericsson X10i though I have not tried it via Hotmail.
|
Just tested the iphone, sent a JPG to one of my miriad hotmail accounts, and opened it with the iphone, the piccy is opened and resolved automagically, so its not a Hotmail issue.
|
I think it may be an Android-Hotmail integration issue, and even then might be something that only affects some handsets.
Some have suggested a hard reset by removing the battery, but the battery cover is a real pain.
|
Thanks - she also has a gmail account so I'll suggest she tries that, although I know she prefers using her hotmail account in general.

I got a Desire S last week and it makes wonderful phone calls...
Seems to have a lot of functionality built in too, but I don't have the spare hours it will need to learn it all. Some great phone tracking stuff, for anyone careless enough to lose it - but probably not unique to the Desire.
|
The Samsung Galaxy S has a phone tracking facility. I've not tried remote wiping it but I have tried locating it and you see the phone contacting Samsung in the same way it would if you checked for firmware updates. And yes it find it. Can also remotely lock it.
There is a lot I've not really explored but have used alternative apps for things like music player and SMS as there are better alternatives that are free or cheap. Trying an SMS app that lets you schedule messages for send even. Handy to pretend you're working etc. :-) Almost as handy as sending a voicemail direct to another Vodafone without their phone ever ringing.
