What is your favourite smell? - corax
Someone on the motoring section stated that there are few smells better than new car smell. Each to their own, but here are a few that I like,

Chocolate
Coffee
Coconut
Winter Honeysuckle - After the long cold winter, it amazes me that this plant can give such a beautiful lemon scent so early in the year.
Lavender
Caramelised onions
The occasional waft of pipe smoke, but only if outside, so that it's not overbearing.

These are only a few of many. Do you have any favourites? And I don't think I want to know BBD's answer! (Only kidding).

Gunk on a hot engine that's burning 'R'.

Thinners, Castrol R40 being burned, various flowers, musk perfumes but not the correctly named Poison, leather (proper car smell), freshly laundered cotton, bacon.

Most of all the natural scent of a good woman.

Or even better a 'bad' woman.... I'm sure BBD will agree....

I am the saddo who said that new car smell was the best.

Other great and evocative aromas:
- The smell of exhausted steam from a locomotive
- New cut grass
- Mrs L's special Chicken casserole when she takes it out of the oven

The smell that tells me she's lit the fire when I get out of the car on arriving home on a cold night. I like a fire, and it also means I'm in the good books.

Frying onions never fails. Frying bacon too, although the stuff they call bacon these days hardly is bacon and smells a bit funny.

They used to say that going off the smell of frying bacon was a sign of liver damage. A rule of thumb to tell you whether you had been hitting the sauce too hard.

Garlic and asafoetida in vegetarian Indian restaurants, although not many Indian restaurants smell all that appetising. They sometimes burn incense which I can't abide. Only like sandalwood and proper Catholic church frankincense. The Hindu/hippy stuff is usually sickly.

That from a hot exhaust after a hectic bit of motoring.

Some people also like the aroma of hot tarmac.....

The first rain after weeks of heat, the smell from wood burning stoves in winter, and that unique steam/coal/heat/oil smell of a big loco.

>> that unique steam/coal/heat/oil smell of a big loco

I was just going to say that Zero. I've enjoyed having it wafting over my garden today as they prepare / play with a loan steam engine for short demonstration runs all day tomorrow at the mining heritage museum next door www.leics.gov.uk/transportfestival.htm Wonder if I'll see any of you lot there?

Poster paint (as used in infant schools) - evokes childhood memories I suppose.

Non-smokeless coal - having lived down South in smoke control zones for years, the smell of (good old-fashioned polluting) chimney smoke in the winter up here takes me straight back to the Aga in my grandparents' thatched cottage, when I was still in short trousers.

>>Calor Gas Fires<<

We have a Canon dual fuel stove with a gas hob that is run on LPG and it brings back many memories of holidays spent in caravans (listening to the rain on the roof!)

I used to like the diesel smell in the engine room.

Lavender.

Fresh coffee.

Unions frying.

Tar.

The sea on a windy day.I remember the steam smell of the old locomotives first time in the UK.

Leaving the old man with his ship in Port Talbot making our way to London.

Freshly cut grass.
The sun on cotton sheets.

The first minute or so of rain on warm, dry ground.
A motorbike parked up in a garage just after a long hard run.
Barbecue smoke
Roasting lamb.

For me it has to be the wonderfully fragrant lavender that we have in our garden. I remember that my grandmother used to make lavender bags from her many plants, and these would be placed in wardrobes and drawers throughout her house. Shirts, socks, handkerchiefs, etc - they all smelled of lavender.

I also like the smell of fried bacon, although I don't eat it myself.

Did your grandma put a lavender bag in the pantry as well then?

Certainly not. That area was reserved for my grandfathers' Davenport's India Pale Ale. Remember that, Zero; Davenport's Beer at Home?

Nostalgia:

The peculiar electrical smell from old AC/DC motors - ozone?

Farmyard smell of damp straw and diesel.

The waft of pipe tobacco in still cold air, lingering long after the smoker has passed.

Hot oil on bronze bearings.

Oddities:

The way when you unscrew a fitting from an old bit of gas pipe, there is sometimes a momentary whiff of old-fashioned coal gas, trapped in the threads for 50 years.

Like a few others that smell of coal, hot oil, and steam from a locomotive is tremendously evocative and always brings back memories for me.

Quite like the smell of cut grass - even though I do suffer with hay fever.

Unfortunately Port Ellen's become so rare it's now priced out of my range - the last bottle I got hold of cost me forty quid!

Take me out to the Ball game? Now that was worth the trip on its own.
