If there was any harm done to these lads it was by well meaning "carers" bullying them into thinking they were victims, had been traumatised and would be severely damaged if they remained in denial.

But listening to him give evidence, and evidence from his parents, left most of us in no doubt the experience had messed the lad up big style.
I agree there's probably no harm done in the majority of cases, but there are good reasons why it is illegal for an adult to have sex with a child.

Girls of that age need to be protected from the attentions of older men who can seriously mess with their emotions as well as possibly getting them pregnant.

Young boys can be badly effected by having sex with older women.
I've seen cases, albeit not many, where this is so.
Part of the problem can be the reaction of the peer group, which is very variable.
The lad is left confused and upset by that because some of his mates are jealous, others congratulate him, and many don't understand but pretend they do.
I've known of lads who have had to change schools because of this.
OK, that's not life threatening, but to suggest sex with an older woman cannot have negative effects on the lad is nonsense.

Had a 14-year-old Zero bonked a middle aged woman, you don't know what your mates in fourth form would say.

I assume, rightly or wrongly, from your posts that you would have no qualms of you or your son being one of the boys in question. However, if the tables were turned and it was a man exploiting young girls, you see things differently.

The norm for "coupling" all over the world is that the men are older than the women, whether by a few minutes or by many years - that is the norm.
Teenage girls develop sexually a good few years before teenage boys. The girls are interested in sex just as much as the boys and at an earlier age, but society (=fathers) allows boys to act differently.
The law - at least English law - has not distinguished between underage (under 16) teenage girls being exploited for sex or teenage boys being exploited for sex.

I agree with that, it's more differing shades of grey rather than black and white. The arguement then becomes the chances of it happening rather than damage always/never happens. I suppose that's why the law makes no difference with regards to sex of anyone involved in a similar act.

Yes, I think so. But boys or young men can be sensitive, emotionally confused or neurotic. Some for example may have been instilled with religious attitudes and have a concept of sin. That sort of thing can cloud the experience for the young.
Plus of course you won't be any use at it when you're fourteen, and 'some old slapper' to use a charming expression I have just read somewhere won't necessarily be polite about it.
Still, better than trying to undo the rubber-and-steel undergarments of a sneering, cleverish, marble-necked upper-middle-class girlie on a West End hotel dancefloor while sweating heavily in Moss Bros tails. I can vouch for that.

I believe that the make up of men and women is quite different in that men can see sex as a detached activity but women have more of an emotional link.

My thought on this is one of consequence, in my book every action has a consequence. First of all she looks like a drug user and just cos she likes bob hope who isnt saying she does harder stuff. Yes, and as nice but dim reminds us, perhaps much much worse.
One would hope that adolescents of both sexes will have been told very emphatically in good time by all advisers and role models that although there can be no such thing as safe sex, thank goodness, prudent sex, if they must have sex (take cold showers darling! Think about something horrible!), is strongly advised.
Two people I knew quite well both died in the same month about fifteen years ago. Each was a well-known modern artist. One was an American homosexual with a history of intravenous drug use, the other an African musician with a slick line in voracious polygamy.
Guess which one died in his eighties of a heart attack and which died before 60 of an aids-related opportunist infection.
