He didn't like rtj70 poking fun at him here

and hinted at imminent departure.

Yes, so I gathered. But his last post, which I quoted from, was in a different thread and it didn't seem to really follow from the previous contributions.

yes, this one
www.car4play.com/forum/post/index.htm?t=6187&v=f
where the mocking of his style was repeated.
To top it, it was used to mock Bellboy's years of professional experience of advertising cars for sale.
|
JH - I think you're right. I didn't read the thread carefully enough. It would explain the "too many schoolteachers" comment as well.
What's a bit of teasing to one person can be an insult to another and it was the second time it happened.
I always thought BB's style, though idiosyncratic, was entirely clear and communicative. And I used to be an English teacher.
|
>> But his last post, which I quoted from, was in a different thread and it didn't seem to
>> really follow from the previous contributions.
My understanding of the "Car adverts" thread is that it's a significant part of what BB does for a crust with his car sales business, and his serious post about what was wrong with the original advert was ignored/abused.
I don't think there's anyone here who takes kindly to having their knowledge of what they do trashed by others, and there's a personal limit of how much time and effort you'd put in before you've had enough.
Having said that, my jibe about the >>>>>>'s (with respect to a previous thread) probably didn't help - ISTR upsetting oldman/bellboy previously - maybe it's just me?
Now, where did i put that harakiri sword?

I always thought he was hiding in Pakistan with his dodgy English.
Now he's bobbing in the Arabian Sea
|
I miss "Tooslow" (John) as well, he seemed like a genuinely good guy. I do hope he's alright.
|
Bellboy last visited on Tuesday of this week.
It's a bit early to predict he's retired.
|
Not seen the surveyor from Manch for a while either. One of the few memebers whose real name I know and I've forgotten his handle - it will come the minute I hit send.
|
Espada.
I remarked on his absence a week or so ago.
Not been seen now since mid-February, after a tetchy exchange with, oddly enough, Dog, who is also missing in action.
|
>> oddly enough, Dog, who
>> is also missing in action.
"he moved and his internet connection disappeared down a cornish tin mine"
As remarked by General Zod, before I get into trouble for using his line.
|
It's known as flouncing apparently.
"To flounce
When a member of an online community announces they are leaving, usually after a protracted disagreement with other members of the community.
"I'm gone. You all enjoy your little discussions."
from the Urban Dictionary

I agree with Humph. John certainly came across as a good natured, pleasant and personable fellow with a keen sense of humour. I, too, hope that he's OK.
Come back John, there's nothing to forgive. And bring Hobby and Dog with you.
|
>> Nothing since.
He deals with punters buying 2nd hand cars. I imagine he'll have thicker skin than a rhinoceros hide :-)
That being said it's a bit rubbish he's been left feeling his time's better spent elsewhere, especially when his manner was to rarely jab at anyone else.
Hopefully he'll soon be back with his riddles, witty comments and dispensing top notch advice in his unique style.
Although there's more and more missing :-(

When I think of the spats and insults ive had on here, only once, mainly due to some outside pressures, did I think of leaving although only for a break rather than stomping off into the distance.
There was a time I let far more get past than it does now, but I realised instead of trying to be polite, I should tap into the motor trade humour that I survived for some years and give as good as I get but with a big grin on my face.
There are some pretty spikey characters in here for sure, but I somewhat doubt they mean genuine upset to anyone, they just type things a certain way to people who read them a certain way.
:-)
|
We better set up a system whereby if you are going on holiday, or away from the 'net for a while that you report in to the mods!!
I remember on HJ, the Growler. I wasn't particularly a fan of his writings but he disappeared and after a while it was discovered he had passed away.
I wonder how many other members have done so over the years? Must change my will to include "post of my demise on C4P"
|
Nah, let them forever worry and wonder.
I want the epitaph on my headstone to read "I am still right"
|
Or perhaps, 'He was nearly always right, but he should have bought a Focus'
;-)
|
Or perhaps, 'He was nearly always right, but he should have bought Focus' !
|
How about "He lived without Focus"
|
I would absolutely hate it if Bellboy left. Sound quirky automotive learning and a near-genius with words.
I think he's far too solid to have flounced. He's taking a break or away on hols.
|
He's a second-hand car dealer.
He has long holidays.
One day I'll upset him enough to bite. ;>) Or let let me have his holiday home at a reduced rate.
|
Is there any way that the mods could contact BB, to see if he really has left the forum?
|
I missed his departure - I've sent him an e-mail.
|
>> I missed his departure - I've sent him an e-mail.
Would the same to John (Tooslow) be a possibility, PU?
|
Has Martin Devon also gone for a long walk - nothing since mid April?
|
...and a near-genius with words...
Can't let that pass.
His prose was dreadful - difficult and frustrating to read, doubly so because what he was trying to say was usually of interest.
It's not about pedantry, it's about being easy to understand.
A bit like the difference between first past the post and AV. :)
|
>> It's not about pedantry, it's about being easy to understand.
You want to read anything my kids send by tect or email then! Or, indeed, most of the output of a lot of my supposedly educated peers on Facebook (present company excepted!).
I'm a big fan of bellboy's no-nonsense writing style and would add my voice to AC's and others in hoping this isn't a permanent departure from the forum.
EDIT: I'm posting this from my phone, a device which not only makes the text a pain to format in my usual style, but also neglects to capitalise new sentences automatically. Does bb post from something sinilar?

...Philistine...
That's the nicest thing I've been called on here this morning.
And probably the most accurate.
|
>> Philistine. Pure, casual, poetry on occasion. Wondrous economy of words. Wish I could do it.
Try.
|
>> His prose was dreadful - difficult and frustrating to read,
Yeah, if only he used the default quoting instead changing it for a style of his own. No one else does that ;o)
|

>> on hols.
Yes. Can't see someone of his demeanor getting upset by a few posters on here. I did wonder at first why he wrote in a sort of limerick style, but I've come to enjoy it. As you say, his choice of words sometimes are mirth inducing.
|
>>I want the epitaph on my headstone to read "I am still right">>
Zero tolerance? ..:-)

Old Navy has not visited since April 16.
Might be too soon to send out a search party, but three weeks is quite a long absence for someone who posts most days.
|
You will need to send the search party to Perth WA.
|
...You will need to send the search party to Perth WA...
He'll probably be back - most people who visit Perth are happy enough to leave.
|
Actually a large percentage stay, Perth is a nice city. They may not want it sullied by ON tho.
|
...Perth is a nice city...
Bit too hot for us limeys though, isn't it?
|
Someone claiming to have resigned from C4P (I presume that's what he means) "a few weeks ago" is letting off steam over at HJ and having a bit of a pop at certain members. I can't work out who he is and who he's having a go at, but see for yourselves:
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=90898
BT beat me to it! And yes, it's obvious who's upset him now I re-read it.

...can't work out who he is...
I think it's hobby, partly because when he flounced out of here he asked the management to cancel his account:

|
BB took an extended break from the other place a year or so ago. He'll be back, I'm sure.
|
Yeah its hobby. Seems he is still upset about it.
|

I blame the Daily Mail.

I don't suppose that HJ thread will be around for long - though the moderators seem increasingly slow to react over there. I have reported blatant unofficial advertising and it was ages before anything was done.

I am getting lost by the handles, is it Hobby who was B308 or something?

HJ's current Ben 10 was Hobby, it seems. Was he called anything else before he was Hobby?

Whos personal Twitter site is this?
|
lord knows, its full of twits.
|
(RaS) presumably means Rattle - I know he posts a lot, but it's pretty inoffensive, often interesting IMO and I'm surprised the poster is upset over it. Strange.
EDIT and it's not as if his views go unchallenged

I think Rattle gets a harder time than most but he creates good material and discussion at times, seems a rather unfair attack.

I resemble that remark...
|
Over on HJ Ben 10 is now claiming not to be Hobby.
|
You realise Ben 10 ( I can only guess he/she is about 8 years old with a name like that ) is getting what they want if we keep talking about it.
Do we have our 'issues' as a forum, yes, absolutely, all forums do but this place was born out of a collective mindset by the participants to make it something great for the people, rather than an add on to the pontificating of a man in a funny hat.
Id keep the clubby atmosphere here for the police state moderation elsewhere any day.
Ben 10 - nobody really cares anymore about any rivalry, its boring, you will only make people over there curious about what goes on over here and you dont want them coming over to the darkside now do you? Much rather have another cup of coffee actually...
|
>> Over on HJ Ben 10 is now claiming not to be Hobby.
>>
.... Max Headroom on HJ claims Ben10 is captain chaos. I think Ben was Cpt. Flack on here as his last post here was a go at Rats. Thread on HJ now locked by Avant. FoR (stunorthants) says there "Lets see if they miss me. My bets are they wont :-)". Is he threatening a flounce like I did yesterday in an Iffy thread?
|
>> Over on HJ Ben 10 is now claiming not to be Hobby.

Well that's cleared that one up.
:-)
|
... I think Ben was Cpt. Flack on here...
Could have been, although hobby's last post here asked for his account to be cancelled, and Ben over there said he had just cancelled an account over here.
I'm now not sure who was who, but I'm not going to let it worry me.
I know who I am.
|
and we put more posts in on there than they had had in the previous month.
|
He is trying the dignified silence trick to see if anyone mentions him, but logged on yesterday at least.
Trouble is that he has changed his name so many times in the last 3 months that, no, on-one will miss him because we don't know which one of us he is.

I'm confused; it's becoming difficult to tell the difference between flouncers and non-flouncers.
Name changing should be disallowed.
:)
|
>> If I didn't know different I would swear you're all females in drag.
I'm mildly confused now, wouldn't that be females in dungarees, or cut off jeans and doc martins with a short back and sides and.....
Don't knock dragging it can be fun, so they tell me.

It's galling to think one may be the reason for someone flouncing. I took a look at Iffy's link though and fairly typically, it sounds, the post in question, like a description of some other site altogether. It seems some people are wedded to their own fantasy lives to such an extent that they are unable to make a sound judgment on what is actually before their eyes. The reality, for them, is what they imagine rather than what they see. They must make nightmarish witnesses in court cases.
So, I don't really miss such weak sisters however harmless they may seem most of the time. But I would miss Espada if he's gone, the superb Bell Boy whose poetic talents are not lost (Iffsky you old philistine) on everyone, and Dog of course. Surely Tooslow hasn't vanished? He doesn't post every day.
I have a nasty feeling that my lifelong capacity for saying too much seems offputting to quite a lot of people. Perhaps I should shut up for a while and leave the field free for better stand-ups like Zero and BBD and seriously annoying PITAs like John H.
Don't get your hopes up though, ths isn't a flounce.
|
I don't think the HJ site has been mentioned here much recently either, contrary to the comments in that thread?

Agreed.
Not that it matters what I think, but I quite liked hobby.
He has gone down in my estimation.
Stop posting by all means, but the wounded valedictory statement he made is just childish.
It wasn't as if AC was being particularly annoying - he can do much better than that, I know.
|
>>he can do much better than that, I know.
No encouragement, please.
|
>> No encouragement, please.

AC's tongue can be sharp, but the resulting wound he usually kisses better, he tolerates most of us quite well.
I like BB's posts, a lot, old fashioned common sense aplenty, cryptic though they could be.
Some of the petty sniping does wear thin after a while, pedantery and things taken way out of context, it's understandable if he needs a break from it, hope he do return with renewed batteries.
|
I hear that he's invited John H around for drinks this evening.

he he he. I am getting under your skin, no denying it. Not aiming where you are feeling the pain, though. It is all in your weak mind, but due to some juxtapositioning of nerves, it is getting referred to your posterior.

See what I mean? No proper discourse, just crawling and trying to itch like a bedbug. Despicable rubbish. Enough to make anyone ashamed of being a self-proclaimed tory.

But at least having the gonads to post his twaddle, unlike the coward who gave the snotnosed little twerp a gong.
Heh heh. Goodness this is childish. Just my sort of thing.

Now there's another one.
Right. Official rumble on the municipal recreation ground at dusk. Bicycle chains, zipguns, anything goes. We'll show those mouldy figs and geeks.
|
>> he he he. I am getting under your skin, no denying it.
The problem here is clear. John H desperately wants to be like AC. He goes as far as copying AC's trademark "he he he" (although AC's is actually "heh heh").
The arguing with AC is just like a boy pulling the hair of a girl he likes.
Ahhh...unrequited love... :)

Maybe he's got a job in one of those posh department stores where they still have lifts.
It's boring when people just quietly disappear - a drama-queen exit is far more entertaining. There were certainly a few over in that 'other place', particularly years ago.
Maybe he's just too busy - like me. I have very little time to post messages. Some might say that's a good thing... Be warned though - I retire this summer after 50 years hard.

he he he. Tchah. You are too clever by half. I have been rumbled. I am sadomasochist and have this fatal attraction for AC's grandiosity. The only problem is that the pain that I inlfict on him that he feels in his posterior is being kissed better by his sycophantic cabal. They enjoy licking it.

You don't get rid of me that easily. I was staying in the outskirts of Perth with no internet access and poor mobile phone coverage. Perth was excellent (for a visit) temp 25/28C at the moment, one rain shower in the last three weeks. The winter weather has not arrived in the west although they have had snow in the south east this week. I got back this afternoon.
