Using up to date phone as a modem - smokie
What speeds am I likely to get if I use use an HTC Desire (or similar) as a modem for a laptop? Would it be as good as a dongle?

As dongles are invariably rubbish, the answer is yes.

My dongle speeds vary.

If you happen to get a good signal - 3G+ Orange call it - speeds are quite close to broadband.

I suspect dongle traffic is like road traffic - much heavier down south.

The networks are clogged by all the stupid twonks sending photos from their smartphones.

Make sure your mobile phone provider counts tethered data usage in your tariff. Mine (Vodafone) seems to. If you get a good 3G signal then as said above you should get speeds comparable to low end broadband. But it can vary.

I'd use it only if I really needed to. But I'd often be near a WiFi hotspot I could probably use anyway.

Our corporate Vodafone tariff definitely does not include tethered data, and in fact we are warned it's horrendously expensive by Vodafone themselves, so perhaps best to double check.

Depends totally on how good your 3G coverage is, what flavour of 3G your operator has implemented and how many active users in the cell at the same time as you.
