They live among us... - Manatee
I will always be amazed and saddened by the stupid or gratuitously malicious things people can do.

I just saw a news item on the England - Wales match, in which a spectator was aiming a laser at a player's eyes. I do hope they managed to hoik out the perpetrator with extreme prejudice.

way back when these things first came out (early 90`s?) was sitting out on hotel balcony in Salou, and some clown from the hotel across from us kept doing exactly the same thing to meand the then missus, - i went round there, kicked open 3 hotel room doors until i found the pillock and gave him a "good seeing to" the first time i`ve ever really lost my temper! - needless to say i found myself "locked up " for the night and it evenyually cost me 10`000 psts, but boy was it worth it!

I'm not sticking up for the laser idiot, but the lower power ones are deemed to be not dangerous.

Possibly true, but it's a bit like waving a replica gun - the person you're pointing at doesn't know whether it's a 1mW office pointer or something more powerful. The odd bods who like to point them into the night sky, sometimes at aircraft including the police helicopter, often buy much more powerful ones and if you're on the receiving end you can't know what it is.

Google laser pointer and you will find a link on page 1 to a site that will sell you a 200mW laser.

In any case it's offensive to shine any sort of annoying light deliberately in someone's face. If done persistently it's an aggressive act just begging for a punch in the nose.

Having worked with lasers in the military I think I can safely say that, if you can see a green light on someone's face as I did on TV yesterday, a laser device is in use which could damage their vision in a bad way.

They're a big problem to today's civil aviators as well PP with numerous airports reporting them being shone at aircraft on approach.

The wind band I play in rehearses in a nice modern church which unfortunately is located in the same complex as the big local Asda. So as well as having our own percussionist, members of the local loitering yoof community join in by banging on the walls and windows.

However we were also treated to a laser light show as well on one occasion, which was a bit unnerving.

I read about a spate of this around Heathrow quite recently. This, and other similar behaviour only leads me to conclude that a worrying number of people were dropped on their heads at birth. I really can't see what people get out of things like this.

It is happening near many airports and Police helicopters are also targets.
Some of these idiots are extra thick and get caught as the heli boys call in the ground team.

There are many reports on aviation web sites

WASHINGTON (AP) — People who knowingly aim l@ser pointers at aircraft would be committing a federal crime subject to up to five years in prison under legislation passed by both the House and the Senate.

The House on Monday approved by voice vote the Securing Cockpits Against l@ser Pointers Act, a response to a growing number of incidents of pilots being distracted or even temporarily blinded by l@ser beams and concerns that terrorists might use l@sers to bring down aircraft.
