leaflet through the door for 'Vphase' - a device which will apparently cut my electricity bill by about 10% 'by reducing mains voltage from 240/50 to 220 and maintaining it, saving energy and money as a result'
What gives ?

If it worked there would be a queue for them.
That is my response to time share sales people, "Let me know when there is a queue for them".

Google produces 43 million answers and none of the ones I could be bothered to read said anything other than guaranteed 10% reduction in bills and no quoted price so, plural and bouncing!

PP, you need to learn to drive Google.
|
No I don't! I just look at the first page of results, works for me!
|
Oh right!
You read the ones that people have paid to hit the top of the search list then.

Probably so in this case but, normally, Google can produce a dramatic difference in the number of hits depending on the subject but, as you are no doubt aware, the most relevant appears first and then in descending order.
It has been so since it was conceived at least 11 or 12 years ago.

Err no that's not the case Stuartli, the sponsored links appear first. That how the business model was conceived at least 11 or 12 years ago.
Remember Google is a business.
Then you get pages from web site who use tricks to appear high on the google search list.
Frequently relevance has nothing to do with it.

>>Remember Google is a business. >>
I'm perfectly aware of that, but I'm referring to searches for subjects that are NOT business related.
I've currently got two books on how Google was conceived, developed and brought to the world, both written by Google employees high up in the executive chain.
In fact it's quite fascinating - and occasionally somewhat disturbing - exactly what can be found out through Google using a range of search methods about individuals or businesses...:-)

My experience of USA is limited mainly to Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada and Utah. Could it be a that "concrete very white, and it stays that way" is because of hotter/drier climate compared to UK?
Visitors from California are often surprised/fascinated to see the moss and lichen on the north facing side of walls and tree-trunks.

ALL searches, business related or not, come back with the same results.
Sponsored hits first, then the sites that cheat to get up the google rankings.

So how can this cheating benefit my business then?

You can imbed lots of text in your page. You can do it so that only web crawlers and spiders can read it.
Lots of info on google - search "how to improve my web ranking on google" or some such phrase.
You can even pay companies to bump you up the search page.
