 Fence painting - Focusless
We've got 20 fence panels at our new place, and they could do with sprucing up. We've already got a 5l pressure sprayer, one of those you pump with a handle sticking out the top, which we've used to spray some stuff on to kill the moss. However its instructions state you can use it for almost everything, apart from fence paint (although it doesn't explicitly prohibit it).

Would it be a mistake to try using the sprayer with fence paint, even the 'sprayable' variety?

Alternatively, Argos are doing the Cuprinol fence paint sprayer for half price, £12.49. It has mixed reviews - anyone used it?

I would probably play it safe and use a brush, but Mrs F has some time off next week and wants to do it, and she fancies using a gadget.

Hmm, the fence should be nice and dry, better to leave it a month or two.

Have something similar but using a D cell powered pump/compressor. Excellent at producing a fine spray of fence paint. But heed the warnings about limiting use to calm conditions; five years on I've still got fence paint spindrift on the 'lingo.

Doesent even need to be calm, I had to have the next door neighbour pay for a specialist valet to get small drops of dull red off the Black Altea.

The sprayer throws out small drops for some yards.

Hmmm, not sure how the land lies re neighbours but some years ago, I managed to upset the ones on both sides of her house by using a sprayer on my mother's fences. Didn't think for one moment the stuff would carry that far. Got their washing, their cars, a conservatory, a path, some trees, my own car....not good...not happy bunnies so to speak...

:-(

forget the sprayer! - drain your sump, fill with new oil and filter, spread ex-contents of sump via brush to fence! - lasts 4 years!

If Mrs F wants to use a "Gadget" - a 10mm spanner usually fits!!

Sounds like a job for my new compressor - and decent a public liability insurance policy.

As regards turning old engine oil into creosote, I believe it needs to be thinned with either paraffin or diesel.

Thinning with paraffin sounds like something Bobby's neighbour might do, using diesel looks a safer bet.

Thanks for the help chaps - looks like we're going to give the Cuprinol thing a go, so just off to a garden centre (with a cafe) to find one.

Let us know how you get on. I used one and it was carp - kept clogging up. I ended up using a brush. But make sure the car is nowhere near the area. I did the same as zero* - flicked drops of paint through the gaps in the fence with the brush and hit my car parked behind. I'm still finding micro spots of paint 4 years on....

Use a decent quality paint as well. It's a pain having to do it again within a few years.

*EDIT - zero's neighbour I mean. Of course zero wouldn't do a thing like that. He's perfect..

Wonder if Obama is re-painting the fence now he's come off it...

He's not. There is oil on the drive after the last oil change. Cant blame that on the neighbour.

Have you forgotten how persistent the evil smell of that stuff is?

"Fence paint" is rubbish. Use creosote[1] instead, or any similar oil-based preservative (but *not* used engine oil, which stinks).

Has anyone used "Creocote" and how good is it ?

Some comments on creosote etc.,

IIRC creosote must NOT be sprayed under any circumstances. I believe the mist permanently damages the lungs.

The only bit of fence ever worth treating is the posts, about 3" below ground level, where damp meets oxygen.
