Ta. we're planning on flying to/from Spain in July but the dates in that article don't seem to include our planned dates. Stroke of luck, for once.

No, we'll never do it - Spain hasn't any oil.

Mine too. Who are Spain attacking - Gibralta, Libya, or is the civil war not over yet?

"The Minister for Development, José Blanco, whose partial privatisation plans for AENA are at the centre of the dispute, said on Wednesday that he would ‘guarantee the right of the workers and the continuation of services in the airports’ though a process of ‘determination and dialogue’.
Blanco made the comments in the control session of the Government in Congress on Wednesday.
President of AENA; Juan Ignacio Lema, has called the UGT, USO and CCOO union representatives to a meeting on Thursday in an attempt to try and get the strike threat called off."

Perhaps they'll try the military option - worked with the traffic controllers last November

Self-interested question, sorry! Does anyone know if a flight from Gatwick to Madeira would be affected by a Spanish strike? I am Ok going out and on a strike day coming back I am guessing that they weight might not be affected or could re-route a bit or even the whole thing might be resolved by May!!!

Indeed, but the aeroplanes fly over Spanish air space, which involves Spanish air controllers.

But its not Spanish air traffic controllers who are going on strike - its the airport groundworkers

Having seen them at work, would anyone notice?

Probably not but you don't need to worry about flying over Spanish airspace to your holiday destination.

I'm guessing PP knows that!!. I think the question is whether AENA also provide en-route ATC and whether a flight from UK to Madeira will transit Spanish airspace and be affected by a strike.

Possibly a flight could route far enough out into Biscay to be in Oceanic airspace in which case control would be split UK/Ireland (Shanwick) and Acores/Portugal (Santa Maria). Would depend on a/c type, fit out and crew qualifications??

Can Alfa Floor provide an opinion?

Pretty sure you could overfly Spain on one the recognised routes using visual flight rules, without the need for Spanish ATC.
