Bexley - anyone been there? - PeteW
Hi all,

As the title says, has anyone stayed in Bexley (kent)?
I'm there for a month on a residential training course for my new job (British Gas) and wondered if there was anything worth looking at/going to in any spare time I may get in the evenings etc.

Given that I have an eclectic mix of interests any suggestions (bar strip clubs!) gratefully received.

Pete

It seems to be a cultural and tourist attraction black hole. Nearest thing I could find for you was this

You could try the on line "Good Pub Guide" (free!) to look for decent ale and pub grub

Bexley is only nine miles from Greenwich, lots to see and do there.

The National Maritime Museum is enormous, needs either a full or half day.

The Observatory could easily take care of an hour or two.

You are fairly handy for the Thames Barrier at Charlton, or you could take the Woolwich Ferry - if it ever runs these days - and have a mooch around Canning Town and possibly the Isle of Dogs.

The Island is home to Canary Wharf, which is worth a look for its skyscraper and surrounding buildings.

Fairly good access to the West End's fleshpots as well.

Probably not quite as well.

Another one would be the Greenwich foot tunnel under the Thames.

I was fascinated by its Victorian construction - simple, round cast iron sections held together by enormous nuts and bolts.

Almost the way a child would build a tunnel.

Nothing to see on foot the other side, so it's just a matter of turning around and walking back.

Used to ride our bikes through the tunnel when we were kids.

Always used to feel amazingly fast.

that tunnel is so atmospheric.
i cant imagine working on building that.
bexley is a bit of a dead space.
safe to walk around when it suits you but not much to see. i lived in orpington for several years.
greenwich is well worth a trip out.

We did that years ago, tube to Greenwich, Visit to Observatory and parkland, walk through tunnel, and DLR to Canary wharf. You could get back to the West End by boat.

people live in Bexley, but no-one goes there.

In your position I'd look for another job. A month in or near Bexley would bore me senseless.

Eltham Palace, an art deco gaff built by Courtauld will occupy you for an hour or two, as will Greenwich. You could try plane spotting at London City Airport and then sit in a lay-by on the A2 watching all the foreign lorries. You might spot the Eurostar trains just off the M2 too.

If you insist on keeping the job I think you should take a few books or a Kindle.
