99% of rivers are the last resort for overflows of sewage and flood waters.
The sewage leaks from farm fields (especially after high rainfall), homes into most rivers and streams and naturally breaks down eventually - unfortunately for beach users not quickly enough.
Glasgow invested masses in sewage treatments it is ground down rather than fully treated but it appears the results is plastics, paper etc removed and smaller pieces of turd - the Clyde and tide do the rest - eventually.
Edinburgh used to take the sewage to sea and dump in deep water from the "Jeanie Deans" sewage barge - stopped on environmental grounds 15 years - new sewage plant cannot cope so result overflows from sewage works enters the river @ Portobello beach rather than 40 mls out to sea!
North sea dumping is in the opinion less harmful than the current sewage burying and burning in a coal fired power station -Longannet.
