I need to get a replacement adapter for a cross trainer. The input socket says 9V 1000ma, but all the spare adapters I have are 12V.

I can't seem to find a website that seems to specialise in this kind of stuff. There are a few 3rd parties via Amazon and nothing on Dabs. Maplin seem to be an option (nothing in stock at my local store), but I was hoping that a specialise website might get it cheaper and faster.

A BT Home Hub power supply is 9V/2A so should work fine if you have one lying around, though you might need to chop the end off and replace it with the correct size for your machine. eBay probably the best place for these, just do a search for "9V power supply". About £3 posted.

Search for the adaptor for your exact model of crosstrainer. Most of them are out there somewhere, may as well get the right one.

Interestingly, I have just called the manufacturer and they claim that the power supply should be a 6v 500ma one, even though the label next to the input says 9v 1000ma.

What does the old charger say?

I'd go for the Maplin option. For my location either at home or at work the website shows surrounding stores as well as the local one. Staff at the Northampton store were pretty good in sourcing me the right one for my Sony World Band Radio. The one they offered initially was switched mode and created the most awful audio mush on the radio. Further searching pinned down a ^v regulated supply with conventional x/former rectifier.

Cost them a packet in lost battery sales as well!

It says "stop looking for me, you'll never find me again, just go out a buy a new one" :)

Having said all that, in the grand scheme of things 3V either way is unlikely to hurt it and most things can tolerate the wrong polarity briefly. Try some of the ones you have knocking around and see if one works? As long as it can manage the 1A continuous output it'll be fine.

Alfa reminds me that polarity needs watching as well!

Not sure about 3V either way being unlikey to hurt. 12 is a 33% increase over 9; how does an Airbus respond to a 30%+ overvolt?

The complicating factor is that customer support was pretty adamant that it should be 6V and 500ma. They are going to get back to me.

Wouldn't really want to fry the machine by using 12 when it should be 6.

Have you got a 6V thing to try with it?

I found one, but the connector was the wrong size.

Do you reckon this would be any good?

Bound to be a voltage regulator in there which will keep the voltage at whatever it needs. Excess power is distributed as heat (about 2-3W?).

Has the fuse gone? Has the socket packed up? Has the cable broken inside the insulation? Has the cross trainer (whatever *that* is) packed up?

No it's much worse than that...I've lost the charger... :)

where did you lose it?

The regulation on some of these power supplies is awful, I had one '9V' one that was actually 12V or more when sourcing a few mA but would drop to 5V if the load exceeded about 100mA, it was allegedly a 500mA supply.

Properly designed circuit should handle a bit of reverse or over voltage but like BB I wouldn't risk it.

excuse me for butting in - but what is a crosstrainer, please?

It's vaguely reassuring to know I'm not the only person that doesn't know that.

It's a piece of gym equipment, like an exercise bike or a treadmill.

I think 'cross trainer' means it gives you two types of exercise, or summat.

Ah right, that would explain why I've never heard of it.

Make sure you get at least 1000ma, if you use a power supply which cannot give the juice the worse case scenerio is a fire.

And me, all that type of training does is wear out your knees and hips. An invitation for medics to make them worse given the chance.

'cross trainer' did make me think of PE teachers at school, which led me to YouTube looking for Dynamo Doug Digby clips, this reminded so much of my PE experience:-

lousy quality; I must try and get the proper DVD of the series.
