>>.well they usually have mirrors behind the bars but they are all non smoking establishments nowadays so anyone that can read a pricing menu doesnt need to see that a pitcher of booze is no better value that a single glass of slosh

Slightly off topic but one of the pubs I sometimes go to called Fab Cafe actually sells halfs slightly cheaper than pints. If a pint was £2.70 a half would be £1.30.
The trick with Wetherspoons is to always study the drink offer list before going to the bar.

Ever wondered why the likes of Wetherspoon sell wine in large glasses?
Their research found wine was mostly drunk by women, and women do not like approaching the bar - too many Gray/Keys types hang out there.
The availability of a large glass means the woman customer can get a decent quantity of wine without having to make more than one visit to the bar.

>no tricks needed the proper beers are plainly priced with good descriptions
obviously if you drink babycham as your favourite tipple then i respectfully suggest you do read the ptricing menu
me i know value and im a fan of timmies
i was in the old post office in banbury last week and then in the wetherspoons in warwick last sunday so i know the crack and timmy makes his dosh on food not hand pulled ales

Must be some profit in the booze though. A rock club in Manchester I don't go to as it is full of students (too young) is £3 in and £1.50 a pint all night. How do they make money out of it if Tim can't make money selling Fosters for £2.70?
I tend to drink German or polish beer when I am in spoons.
|
you mean bottled beers then
bottled beers are for home
real ale is for pubs
|
Have you noticed Tim's places are trying to go upmarket, look at their new menus.
I did get a pint and a coffee for less than two quid in one just after Christmas, you can't get a pint for that there now.
|
yes bt the menus are much better and still clean :-)
im sure the bitter is £1.80 a pint for marstons,i cant get it for that in my wm club
|
I don't like the new menus, BB, they are not as clear as the old ones, especially if you have some sort of restriction on what you can eat such as gluton free... The old ones were much easier to read I feel...
As for the beer, yep, round our way its still less than £2 a pint... and I entirely agree re Real Ale and bottles... Its a shame we can't just ban cans altogether as they ruin the taste of beer (if thats possible with some of that cheap lager)... Just like plastic glasses do (or polycarbonate as Timmy said in the latest mag!)...

Have seen that before years ago, the prices give it away.
Friend was adamant that he would never pay more than a £1 for a pint, I wish, beer went up to £1.05 a pint but a half stayed at 50p, friend marched up to the bar and ordered two halves, promptly paid his pound then asked for a empty pint glass and proceeded to pour the two halves into the pint, he the turned to us and said, 'Told you I'd not pay more than a pound a pint!' The following week a half was 55p......
Wonder what would happen if you asked for two halves in a pint glass?

Went out in Leeds last night for a skin full (day off today) & no up selling was offered on a pint of carling what can they offer nuts or crisps?
The pubs were generally quite busy for this time of year & carling was £2.60-2.85 depending on pubs but as a shocker one pub we go in on Greek St offers beer at £2.00 a pint all night, Needless to say it was busy and tasted just fine to me.
If they can offer it at two quid so can some of the rest & im not paying over three quid a pint those pubs are in Leeds too.
Tonight staying in with our Gert & off to Asda later for a box of stella & wine for her which be much less than i spent last night about £35.00 inc short ride in taxi £2.70 & chicken Kebab about £4.00 & free ride home on the train no Taxis from Leeds which is £12.00.

I hate very much too-loud music in bars and I hate overheated bars too. I don't mind venturing in to get drinks but unless there's a quiet end or an outside area I won't drink in places like that. Of course it's silly expecting a big Portobello Road pub on Friday evening to be as church-like as a country pub snug on a slow Monday.
I always know what I am going to drink and I usually know how many drinks I am going to have, never more than three these days, usually two.
Anyway all those tricks, so-called, including the unmannerly jostle at the bar and the unprofessional conduct of bar staff quite often, seem calculated to make me label the place a latrine and never go there again.
As if one needed to be encouraged or manipulated to drink! What do these wallies think one has gone in a goddam boozer for? Tchah!
