New Type of Garlic at Lidl - Perky Penguin
For those of us who do cooking (Zero at al) there is a new type of Spanish garlic available at Lidl. It comes in a small woven basket and what makes it useful is that it is a single bulb, like an onion, rather than the multiple "wedges" of a normal garlic. They come in an assortment of sizes from a marble to almost a golf ball and a lot of peeling time is saved.

sounds interesting.

I hate peeling Garlic, tho I love smashing it with my knife and chopping it up.

I did some research on this, having once attempted to grow garlic and ending up with what is technically called "solo garlic" or "single-clove garlic".

There are two types, apparently. One is immature "normal" garlic, which has failed to develop from the individual cloves that you plant, expecting them to become bulbs each made up of many cloves. Conditions like drought can cause this.

The other type is the true single-clove. Apparently this originated in China (like so many things these days) and will never develop into multi-clove garlic. It is normally much milder than the latter and if you want your garlic really powerful don't choose it.

If you're interested, there is a variety of pink garlic grown in and around the village of Lautrec in the south of France which is extra-powerful.

If I was using solo garlic I'd be thinking of roasting it as a side-vegetable.

I never chop garlic. I always buy it ready minced in big jars from my local exotic superstore. Same goes for ginger. Very cheap and very convenient.

...and lacking flavour.

Thats not garlic. You cant stick cloves of it in meat, you cant roast it, you cant fry it, and you cant taste it.

Nonsense.
New Type of Garlic at Lidl - Zero
so how do you roast it then? saute it? stick cloves of it in lamb?

Clearly you cant, so clearly its not nonsense.

I only really use garlic in sauces. I don't ever cook lamb, we avoid red meat in our household with the exception of giving the children beef every now and again.

Your comment about it being tasteless is the nonsense I'm referring to.

In that case try blitzing some roasted or sautéed garlic in your sauces and soups.

Then you will realise the taste locked in garlic, that is released by being cooked.

The stuff you have is mush.

I used to chop/crush fresh garlic in the past, but I haven't noticed any difference in tase when using the preprepared stuff.
New Type of Garlic at Lidl - Zero
yes but did you used to sauté it, or roast it, or just chuck it in?

I always started my sauces by frying up some onion till transparent, then bunging the crushed raw garlic in for a minute or two with the onion before adding the tomatoes/stock whathaveyou.

Lots of wild garlic on the banks of the river by the caravan.

There is a type of garlic available in Russia from which you can eat the stem of the plant as well as the bulb. The stems are frequently chopped up and served as a salad. It looks like young green beans to the uninitiated and in fact the first time I experienced it was in a restaurant in Moscow where I actually thought it was green beans. Imagine my surprise when I bit into them. Excellent side dish to ice cold vodka though.

This would have been wild garlic, I imagine - you can eat the whole plant (cooked or raw) and it's fairly mild, though the leaves can be a bit stringy.

Speaking of Lidl, I have recently found their porridge to be excellent.

It retains a bit of 'grain' after cooking, which I like, rather than some porridges which cook down to a smooth slop.

This being Lidl, it's not called porridge, it's called 'wholegrain oats', sold under the Nordwaldtaler brand.

I'm sure the half-kilo bag was only 37p.

Highly recommended.

Seconded. Lovely stuff. Good for baking too.

...Good for baking too...

Never been much of a baker.

Oatcakes, I suppose, and maybe use some as part-replacement for flour?

When making a crumble, substitute oats for some of the flour - say, about 25% - for an extra crunchy texture.

We've just bought around a kilo of big, beautiful, purple garlic. from Pepe the onion man, (grown in Granada), for around 4.35€.
The thought of paying UK prices for weedy little white bulbs grown in China does not appeal, so I think a couple of bulbs are to be set aside for DIY growing.

Worth trying but my experience has been that not all varieties of garlic do well in England and it is better to buy varieties that have been produced here from a nursery. Iberian Wight is good
