Another word deemed offensive - Iffy
Following on from the Dire Straits/faggot thread, another word has fallen foul of the word police.

tinyurl.com/6k5arbh

I'm as easily offended as anybody, but 'panties'?

Surely not.

"It is PC gone mad" I say, in my Meldrew voice!

Recall that Korean chappie who offed all the kids at Virginia Tech a few years back?
Bizarre. We are allowed to know that he had tooled up and blown a lot of kids away BUT we weren't allowed to hear him say F*** and S*** on the video he'd amde before doing so!
So... offing people is offensive, we can report that. In gory detail.
BUT saying F*** is an absolute no-no... in case it offends somebodt!

Oh. Life imitates Art. Fry and Lawrie did a thing ~20 years ago, where the Countdown conundrum was "Sloblock".

...My PC often goes mad when I press the wrong keys...

There's a few PCs on here who go mad if you question any of their posts. :)

I am still grumbling a bit over censorship of the word 'b****iness' when I used it last week, while the word 'b****' was not molested in another thread.

One law for the polemicist and another for the dog lover if you ask me...
Another word deemed offensive - Pat
AC, can you just do one post without a word in it that I have to Google please:)

Pat

I see though that this happens automatically as in the other place.

Did the dog lover get it reinstated by dint of special pleading? I think we should be told.

:o}

I dont think b**** ( b i t c h) is rude, offensive or any form of swear word.

It should be removed form the swear filter.
Another word deemed offensive - Pat
It's quite easy to do......I've removed a lot on our forums and although the other trustees were against it, I waited a few days and they haven't even noticed yet!

That was two years ago:)

We also have the facility to have the offendin word replaced with a different one.
We had a vote on this among the members and they asked for SAUSAGES

So a post will now read I've had a sausages bad day today.

It's not what you say, but the way you say it, and that applies equally to this word.

Are not most perceived swearwords the same?

I remember some years ago when one contestant came up with W*nkers.
The other guy got it too and just said ' We're a pair of w*nkers '

It wasn't edited out, the word was legit and no-one bothered.

I'm going to need more tissues to dribble into, if Rachel and panties come up in the same sentence !

I can't see why the swear filter here doesn't like the word used when evacuating wind from the lower bowel ! Surely no-one's offended these days .

Well...

'Numbers girl Rachel Riley was left blushing and host Jeff Stelling was left smiling as the rude word was produced yesterday.'

'Viewers sat with bated breath waiting to see what the two contestants would go for - and were stunned when the naughty word popped up.'

So not quite the end of civilisation as we know it :)

"I'm as easily offended as anybody, but 'panties'?"

I'm not normally offended but would prefer "panties" to be removed swiftly in this case.

THE GLASS OF BEER

The lanky hank of a she in the inn over there
Nearly killed me for asking the loan of a glass of beer:
May the devil grip the whey-faced slut by the hair
And beat bad manners out of her skin for a year.
That parboiled imp, with the hardest jaw you will ever see
On virtue's path, and a voice that would rasp the dead,
Came roaring and raging the minute she looked at me,
And threw me out of the house on the back of my head.

If I asked her master he'd give me a cask a day;
But she with the beer at hand, not a gill would arrange!
May she marry a ghost and bear him a kitten and may
The High King of Glory permit her to get the mange.

Some brilliant Irish chap. Chapeau!

James Stevens, 1882-1950. Apologies to the shade of a great polemicist.

Several meanings. See:

dictionary.reference.com/browse/b**** (just add the obvious missing letters; section three is the one that applies in this instance in the case of being offensive as I would know it).

The swear filter here is a "Legacy" of the Backroom, we'll sweep it out one day come the re-fit.

Panties? offensive?

Might get a giggle but even my Granny would have used the word. She's have been mortified to know the King used all those words in overcoming his stammer!!!!

Who exactly decides what is 'politically correct' or not? Are they accountable to anybody?

!!! All I did was report what the guy at Sea Life World in Hawaii asked for! :-)

He wanted people to (ahem) "throw" fish to the seals. So he wanted "throwers". Well not exactly. Am I being too obtuse in my efforts to circumnavigate the swear filter? Obviously I should have complained about him but SWMBO and I decided to settle for a good giggle instead.

If it's a word beginning with "toss", I fell foul of it earlier.

I don't know who the delicate little flowers are who get offended by words like that, but maybe they should stick to Sunday school and WI meetings, and leave the real world to the rest of us.

paul,

I thought your earlier word began with a 'w' - and I was surprised you wanted to use it.

Well, no, and this is why I got so grumpy about being denied the use of it. Besides, the common assumed meaning of it is incorrect - doesn't refer to disciples of Onan, but to dipsomaniacs.

Yes.

Throw, chuck, lob, sling, ah, toss, is that it?

Paul got it. I think you're being coy Iffy. But I won't carp.

If you have a copy of Hell is a City, filmed in 1959, illegal gambling features strongly in the form of tossing schools on the moors above Oldham.

Often raided after a tip off...The tosseur threw a couple of old pennies in the air and bets would be taken on the heads or tails result.

Nothing vulgar, crude or non-PC about that !

as I said earlier the swear filter will be re-visited at some point.

>> Who exactly decides what is 'politically correct' or not?

I don't even understand why the word "politically" is used in that phrase/description. Where does politics come into it? Wouldn't "socially acceptable" be a more understandable phrase?

>> Where does politics come into it? >>

It doesn't. The word comes from "politic", not "politics".

Politic means something that is expedient and acceptable to the intended audience.
Politics is the business of pedalling expediency on a big scale.

Another word deemed offensive - Tooslow
peddling. Sorry. Couldn't resist. :-)

Pedantic posts on the forum seem to be acceptable, as long as they're accompanied by an apology.

.....And a smile.
