An employer can no longer force you to retire at 65 www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12177927 . link edited - it didn't like the full stop right at the end of it

Interesting, when so many jobs are being cut and companies are downsizing, that there are moves to increase the longevity of the workforce.

Doesn't sit too well alongside articles like this www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-12177853 where Manchester council are desperate to cut costs and have asked for anyone over 55 to consider early retirement.

This is expected.

Govt. does not have enough money for pension to pay an aging workforce.

This will rise to the event that employers are extermely unwilling to hire anyone around mid 50s (unless it is senior director level jobs off course).

Please explain.

Earlier, when hiring someone, employers knew they would retire at 60-65.

Now they won't be able to force someone to retire.

Some people will insist carrying on forever. But biology says that for most jobs, employees' performance will degrade with age. They can't also be dismissed on performance ground as this will spawn lots of age discrimination lawsuits.

This will make hiring older candidates risky.

So employers will try to avoid them in the first place.

Yes they can... Its just that the Company will have to be careful when going down that avenue just as they have to be now... If a person wants to work beyond 65 then they have to accept that they will be expected to do the job as well as any younger person and the consequences if they don't... But I think the older workers already know that!

I suppose some people like working late into life, but after watching my Dad die after just 9 years in retirement, and for over half of that he was partially disabled, I for one will be getting out asap!

I asked movilogo as I'm 55 in 4mths and will take my deferred early pension then having taken redundancy at 40 to *do my own thing*. I find now that I'd like a part time or flexible job for the next 5yrs or perhaps more. Hence my interest in your thoughts on 55s being excluded from the job market.

I think it could go either way with any specific job or applicant. I know in real life I can offer an employer a degree of life/work experience they'd find hard to achieve in someone at the other end of their working life. And for me I don't care about job security so in fact I'd be less needy than a younger person with a new family & mortgage to support.

In my job this has been the case for many a long year. Over 50s are seen as being behind the times.

I have no problem with this but I fear it will make it even harder for younger talent to get jobs.

My other issue is what if one wanted to retire at 65 would they still get a state pension?

Read all about it here. tinyurl.com/yasdwgs

P.S. With your lifestyle you may not live to age 65!

Funny... since I've been taking part in this old folks thread the ad box top right is offering *last longer in bed" cures. Don't miss a trick do they...

...the ad box top right is offering...

I'm still getting cellphone jammers and free bingo.

I suppose the former means you avoid interrupting the person calling the latter.

I think that folks like Pug and Zero who have recently taken retirement are the winners here. For the rest of us, I think we will all be working till we drop dead.

Doin't know what I've done to my cookies but I'm getting the *last longer in bed* ads too:)

Slightly off thread but this reminds me of the Not the 9 O'Clock News sketch of the union steward representing 'Brother Jameson' who had died at his post and was strapped to a radiator to keep him warm.

Enjoy

That is the general idea :) Live life to the full then dead. Would be better than spending 20 years in an old peoples home.

Actually I am not on unhealthy, a bit over weight (but cut down a lot on junk food lately) I drink a bit at weekends but I don't do drugs etc.

I am probably no more unhealthy than the average person my age.

Its ludicrous.

Trade, Industry and commerce needs young, fresh blood with energy and bright newer ideas (plus they are cheaper). Clutter up the workings with old people and you kill this fresh fish, who end up unemployed and permanently listless.

Edit, not getting the "last longer in bed adds" clearly they know its not required here.

Knowing how hard it is for my even well qualified friends to get jobs I agree with you. We will end up with lots of poor under 30's and we will end up with massive sick pay jobs for the 91 year olds who refuse to retire despite the fact they no longer capable of working.

That said providing a person is healthy and is able to work thnk it is also wrong to just pension them off at 65 automatically.

I can see both sides.

It's hard for everyone to get jobs and make a living nowadays. It matters not what age we are.

Good luck to everyone. There's no point dividing us all up in to categories and getting all dog-in-the-manger with everyone else. Everyone deserves a fair shot at any job they are qualified and/or experienced enough for.

I want to retire early on not late on and enjoy some life.

This is ideal for the needy and greedy but with zero the younger need to be brought in not the old codgers.

I am sure that employers will find a way to sack under performing employees as they have always done. It's just one reason they can't use. I know peoples circumstances differ, but 60 was the right age for me to retire. At least I am fit and well enough to enjoy life and travel worldwide at the moment, make the most of it while you can !

This recession aside, there are plenty of jobs to go round for young and old. But lazy governments (particularly the last one) take the easy option of importing foreign labour instead of training us natives up to do them.
