I have been s/e for 20 odd years , and whislt I'm sure the accountancy firm who I use is a fantastic co, for larger companies than me, and I never get... well if you do this you'd save this ... its basic book keeping and ensuring I pay the correct tax and VAT - I'm thinking of changing , there's a small local co "TAX ASSIST ACCOUNTANTS" , I beleive they've like a franchise, does anyone here have any knowledge of them, or do you use JOE BLOGGS advertising in the newsagents ??

I just use my mother but I do the book keeping myself. All the rules are on the IR site so its not that hard.
My turnover isn't high enough to warrant an accountant but if I ever end up paying serious amounts of tax then an accountant would be worth it.
I am not VAT registered so it is only NI and income tax I need to pay.

It used to be the case that the revenue had to 'do' your books if so requested. Whether that is still the case I don't know, but I suspect that it is.

You are correct that Tax Assist are a franchise, so they may or may not be any good depending on who bought the franchise for your area. If you are thinking of changing, I suggest you ask around your contacts - Financial adviser (if you have one), bank, solicitor, other business people and follow up any referrals to people who are know to give good service to small business and individuals.

What about the area of work you're involved in ? There must be chatter amongst similar placed people. I would suggest that you'd probably get a better service from a dedicated local accountant...
