Royal mail well done. - Bigtee
Sitting here having breakfast at 9.15am and a knock at the door so naturally i answerd it was the Royal mail delivery man with my parcel i ordered other day delivered on a Sunday.!!

Is this due to the back log of parcels or has this been going on now for some time?

My father who was a postie said deliverys were never done a few years back.

Great service i say and why not post letters too every day as other services work too.?

My office have done well; they have put on a larger, leased, van and two posties instead of one, to try and clear the backlog. That said, I still haven't received an important document from HMRC which was posted on 24th November! The follow up copy arrived within 5 days of posting and the situation seems to be improving.

Great service by them just keep it going all year and drop parcels off when more folk are at home rather than work.

I think you will find that "two posties in a van" is a new delivery system which has caused chaos in the areas where it has been introduced.

>Great service i say..

My experience is somewhat different.

Our post seems to get delivered twice a week, on Wednesday and Friday, usually accompanied by items addressed to neighbours. Neighbours often get our mail (on Wed. or Fri.)

It's been happening for so long that we don't bother about it any more.

I've had "While you were out" cards stuffed through the letter box while I've been waiting for a delivery.

I've been to the local depot to collect parcels they supposedly couldn't deliver and queued for more than half an hour along with loads of other folks with the same story. The last time, I gave the woman in front of me a lift back into town. She'd had to catch two buses to collect a parcel they'd failed to deliver.

For anything other than regular bills/statements etc. I now use the postal service at work. We get two deliveries and one collection per day there.

Other than that, they're great.

Appears to have gone down hill here over the last couple of years.

Back in November we had a "sorry you were out card" left for some gift vouchers I had ordered. Called in at the sorting office the following day where after a long wait they couldnt find it. Suggested that I called back tomorrow which I did to be told they thought that they had lost them.......advised by less than helpful member of staff to call customer services and lodge a claim.

Called the sender of the vouchers (Halfords) to tell them they had been lost by the post office, who were really helpful and agreed to send out replacements, but would also make a complaint to the branch in question......hour later I had a call from the sorting office to tell me they had now "found" them.

Quite often get post for the neighbours in with ours and fed up with the rubber bands being left on the doorstep and littering the pavement! Rant over

waste of time this last 6 months
they have lost the plot
quicker its all sold off and i get my mail in a reasonable time the better
(what other country gets business mail delivered at 12.00pm?)
Royal mail well done. - Perky Penguin
I guess it is down to the volume of mail, a large proportion of which is unsolicited carp. It was said that in Victorian times one could write a letter asking someone round for dinner; get the first collection, out of 5, catch the 3rd delivery out of 5 and you friend turned up for 7pm eats!

Some EU countries don't have deliveries - if you want your post you go and collect from a numbered box in the local or main Post Office.

>if you want your post you go and collect from a numbered box in the local or main Post Office.

I've lived in a number of countries where we only had a post box or poste restante service.

You learn to accept that mail can take two days if everything goes well, or ten days if the "security services" want to read the contents and it misses the Monday train.

Royal Mail claim to have next day delivery for First Class mail in mainland UK. For business addresses that may be true but at home I've stopped bothering.

Our postman kept up deliveries during the bad weather even though our lane was virtually impassable. He sub-contracted to a friend with a LandRover, a sort of Mad Max special with enormous studded balloon tyres and a three-foot ground clearance.
It could have coped equally well with floods - high level exhaust up one side of the windscreen and a snorkel air intake on the other.

Incidentally I notice that lots of post doesn't have Royal Mail stamps or franking on it now, but the names of various courier companies, DHL etc. It still gets delivered by the usual postman though.
Are postal services now organised like other utilities - the electricity comes down the same wires, but it is provided by British Gas, Tesco, etc?
Royal mail well done. - Old Navy
A lot of our Royal Mail post is not franked, could this be to ward off complaints about late delivery?

At last someone has noticed!

The courier companies, DHL etc do not have the capacity to deliver to every address in the UK, so have an 'agreement' with Royal Mail that RM will make the final delivery.

Isn't that nice of the RM?
No.. not really, they are forced by to do so, and to top it all, they lose money on every one of their competitors letters they are forced to deliver.

That's not something that is widely known, the only reason I found out was through inside contacts....

Edit.... just found a link www.dailyfinance.co.uk/2010/10/18/royal-mail-seeks-price-rise-backing/

I thought it was well known that Royal Mail was providing "last mile" services for other companies, along with the advertising flyers, and other "non mail" items. I don't doubt they are charging for the service either.

They make very little on the flyers, and as I said LOSE money on the 'last mile' (or 10-20mile) delivery's.

Meanwhile the RM's competitors can pick and choose what they will carry, where they will deliver it to, and how much they will charge.

Do they? Despite having a virtual monopoly on that service. Not very efficient of them then.

Any sources for your statement?

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/mar/10/royal-mail-private-companies

''We look at it every day while we are at work. It stares us in the face even as we are preparing our rounds. It mocks us and taunts us as we push the letters through the letter box. You probably don't even recognise it. It's there in the right hand corner of what may already be a majority of the letters we handle every day, in the form of three letters beside the frank: DSA.

It stands for "downstream access" and represents the access that private mail companies have to the Royal Mail network, which is being subsidised at the rate of about 2p for every letter we deliver. The rate is set by Postcomm, the so-called "independent" regulator. Check out who the commissioners are. Almost every one of them has interests either in the private mail industry or in deregulation.''
Royal mail well done. - Cliff Pope
So the RM doesn't have a monopoly any more? These aren't just parcels, but perfectly ordinary letters. How does an individual post a letter by say DHL, and what does it cost compared with an ordinary stamp? I can't quite see how this works.

Or is it like these discount deals with BT arranged by other organisations? They apparently buy up a block purchase of so many hours of BT time, at a discount, and then can re-sell it still at a discount to subscribers, the actual service still provided by BT. It sounds bizare, but that's life now. Can someone buy 10 million letter-miles from RM, and then sub-contract it back to RM to do the actual handling?
Royal mail well done. - swiss tony
>> So the RM doesn't have a monopoly any more? T

They have the worst kind of monopoly you can have.
That's the 'last mile' monopoly.

other post handlers do not have to deliver to the address on the post.
RM does.

The likes of DHL, charge less per letter, knowing full well that the RM will have to, by law, do the final sorting, and delivery to the door.

I was once on the post, and have friends and family who still work for RM.
I don't think many people understand the amount of handling an item of post undergoes....

Royal Mail has a protected monopoly on the "last mile". The private competitors would like to see it removed, but RM Unions don't want that to happen, do they now?

Most of the postmen I know, just want to have a job, and to know that, that job is relatively safe.
Like all of us I suppose.

Stuff the unions, and stuff the management, on the whole, neither really care about the workers.
look back in history, and you will see that has mostly always been the case!

Oh, BTW, when the RM does get privatized, don't hold your breath expecting to get a door to door service from the likes of DHL.

If and when the RM gets the right to refuse 'last mile' then you, and I will have to collect our own mail, or perhaps get a once a week delivery.

And that is where the problem lies.
People don't like paying current postage charges.
And couldn't take a letter from Reading to Henley for the price of a stamp, let alone Lands End to John O'Groats....

Just a matter of time. The union leaders will protest to try and protect their fat salaries, not workers jobs.

Exactly BB, hence my posting saying that.
Pity some people think that the service we get today, is the worse possible, even though for the cost it is normally very good.

That said, i am getting very cheesed off getting other peoples post - be it next doors, or from the cul-de-sac up the road......

Is 23 Oak Road, the same as 21 Oak road, or even 23 Oak Road Gardens???????
NO Mr Postman it isn't!

Got Xmas card today - 19 days to come 45 miles - is this a record?

Having moved house in November we set up a 3 month redirect costing £33.64. But I got an email from the new owners of the old house before Christmas warning that they had got 20+ items that had slipped through the net (and we don't get that much mail). In fact they wondered whether there was a redirect set up - they had asked the postman and he said there wasn't.

Things have been better since I emailed Royal Mail, but I shouldn't have had to.

RESULT !

I was just outside pressure washing the salt of of the motor. A rental van containing one postie stopped, (the first one I have seen for over a week), gave me one of the half dozen packages that have been in the RM system for weeks, asked for directions to a nearby street (not a local postie) and disappeared into the distance.

I wonder which of the local warehouses that have been rented, and are being used to stockpile undelivered mail the rest of our mail is in.
Royal mail well done. - Old Navy
ANOTHER RESULT !

It must be our turn for RM deliveries.

A second postie on foot (not our normal one) has just delivered three Christmas cards (two from the local area and unfranked), and half a dozen bulky junk mail items.

Just the half dozen or so packages to go (I hope).

A rental van
>> containing one postie stopped, (the first one I have seen for over a week),

Thats interesting that you say that - because our postman was using a rented van, instead of the "standard issue"
Are most of their vans of the road?, is there not that many to go round? nice little earner for the rental companies perhaps?
Royal mail well done. - R.P.
It's common practice. There is a finite number of vans. In some (if not most depots) it's common for posties to have to use their own cars to get to their "walks" if all the vans are taken - they are not compensated for this.

I've heard beat coppers complain of the same thing.

why would there be beat coppers?
surely a commodity like beat is a low value article or do they get a sweetener for protecting it?

Received 2 Christmas cards today - one posted 20/12 first class about 5 miles away, the other had no postmark (just a scribble over the stamp). Our postman takes out only the "junk" mail several times a week; real post is restricted to about 3 days a week.
At least I have the consolation of knowing that I participate in the postal survey so the length of time certain letters take to arrive either from me or to me is being monitored. I also get free first class stamps, which is a bonus.

Sent a faulty Ubisurfer netbook via 1st class recorded on the 6th Jan. The company in London still haven't received it (some 2 weeks later). Told by RM to wait another week, then I should be able to seek compensation if lost. Only will pay up to £41 though ;o(

Annoying that I've just renewed a warranty and 3 yr subscription on the Ubisurfer at a cost of £80. I hope I can claim that back from Datawind if the netbook has got stolen.

We have just received three outstanding items from mid December, thats just the stuff we know about. The RM is getting a lot of flak in the local press with responses from posties blaming the "management". The management is blaming the council for not clearing the roads, (areas nearby had the same snow and no or minimal mail problems). Management or workers (that sounds like managers don't work) are sleepwalking into privatisation. If, or when that happens it will be a case of do your job or out the door no matter who you are. Then see them squeal.

And all the time their work is going elsewhere.

No it is not the postie's fault, it is your fault for not writing a clear message on the letter.
You should have said "Not known at this address - return to sender".
