I'm not talking about yachts, but even 10-yr old small boats (just for 4 people) cost in the region of £50k.
What makes them so expensive?
|
Expensive to built and/or supply and demand.
|
The price people are willing to pay.
|
Supply and demand or some other aspect of market forces?
|
Cottage industry production. If they were making 100k a year.. instead of hundreds at most...

its an up and down market

Wait for the January sails. (sic)
|
I'll float the idea past SWMBO
|
If you can afford to run a boat you can afford to buy it.
|
Would I wear boots, deck shoes or slippers on a boat ?

Preferably bare feet, otherwise something soft which is never worn off the boat.
Never wear shoes that have been used ashore on a boat.

On our last sailing holiday I was moored alongside a lovely 45-footer with polished teak decks one day.
The owners were an Italian couple with a little border terrier.
When they returned to the boat the dog waited until he'd been picked up and had his paws rinsed in a bucket of fresh water before he'd get onboard.

If I owned a boat like that it would not get near it, well trained though.
The grandkids are lucky to get in my car.

You..........Slippers?.............Never.
|
Depends whether it's a slipper launch or not.

Just had a quick look on ebay, sailings boats about half that, I take it you mean a power yacht job?
|
Just buy a Toyota Lancruiser instead :). Fit with a Honda outboard :)....
|
Or buy one of these:

Saw one trundling around the streets of Liverpool over Christmas.
Strange sight on dry land.
|
Had a trip on one of these in Boston - remarkable machines, with a remarkable background.
|
Have been on the London one, it launches on the thames via the slipway next to MI5.
|
...via the slipway next to MI5...
Is that secret agents' code for Vauxhall Bridge?
|
Vauxhall Bridge House, yes.

Say no more.
There were a few attempts to launch river bus and taxi services when I was living in London in the 1980s.
All sunk without trace (ho-ho).
I understand there is now a riverbus service, which presumably is viable/subsidised.

Raising a Point of Order - it is MI6 HQ.
|
No it isn't - it is a fact!
|
I wonder if the workers have melted it down for scrap metal yet? Eh Ar.
|
There used to be two DUKW's at Mablethorpe when I went there on holiday as a kid.
Remarkably versatile and rugged machine; according to Wiki, the Marines still have four of them in use!
Did I mention that they were built by GMC? ;-)

Been with them - quite entertaining and good value - typically American !
|
I was dragged back to Hunstanton last year, where they've had some old WW2 vintage DUKWs for decades.
I saw this monster, but haven't a clue what its history is. I can't believe it was purpose-built:

The link says it was originally a US Marine Corps landing craft used in Vietnam. Powered by two 300bhp V8 engines and with an original cost of $1,000,000, (sounds a bit much that).
|
Who needs a boat when you can have one of these?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-KczCp0OQ4&feature=player_embedded
About £110,000.
|
Why all speed boats have steering on the right?
|
Are you just coming up with more or less random questions? You haven't said what sort of boat you were asking about yet.
|
I'm not decided yet. Doing some R&D on boats :)
|
They don't.

Been about boats for 50yrs... big and small. £50K is far more than you need to get on the water for just 4 folks... what sort of thing have you found at that price?
|
>£50K is far more than you need to get on the water for just 4 folks...
Well said Fenlander.
Here ya go movilogo:
tinyurl.com/6kl88p8
Two double cabins plus saloon, electric fridge, furling mainsail and genoa, hot & cold pressurised water, gravity holding tank, electric windlass plus 16HP Yanmar.
Everything you need for 2, comfortable for 4, will take 6 using saloon.
I know the company and their boats are always spotlessly clean and well maintained.
A bargain at €24K if you're in the market. All you need is a dinghy and outboard to go with it.

Yes and if you are willing to go for something useable but a little older there are many 4 berth cruising sailing boats for less than £10k. Here is a classic example on the broads if that was a suitable cruising area...

And for the best fun 4 folks (in wetsuits) can have under £7k...
