Not sure if I should stick this here or in 'computer related' but anyway.

Tesco Direct are flogging reasonable spec. Dell 1545 laptops with change from 300 notes. Both my daughters have these machines and they're standing up to teenager use pretty well.

Main issue with theses are lots of DC jacks playing up on them. The chargers them selves don't seem to last either I am often replacing them. Done a few hard drives on that range but I think that is just because they are so common rather than a problem with the design.

As a cheap laptop at least they are very easy to repair.

I'm not surprised, whoever moved the dc jack from the back to the side needs a slap, it's now much easier to accidentally knock.

In case anybody is wondering:

store.apple.com/uk/product/MC461B/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

The Magsafe connector is neat, doesn't stick out and is designed to safely disconnect if the lead is pulled or the connector is nudged.

Looks neat, works a treat, but then this is Apple we are talking about.

OK, I admit I've read stuff about the connector overheating, but mine barely gets warm and it's plugged in most of the time.

...I recall there was quite a bit of chat about ELO a couple of weeks back, this looks like a good deal...

Thanks Spammers.

I've decided to have a dabble.

As you say, £9.99 (postage included) for a three CD remastered set is pretty good.

Now let's hope it turns up - not that I'm still a bit wary of internet commerce, but Richard Keys might recognise my attitude as 'prehistoric'.

But as he said, things have moved on.

3 CD ELO box set for a tenner - Zero
If it turns up...

Indeed. I ordered, from an ebay vendor, an IPOD interface for Nicoles Polo radio.

Nothing had show up after 20 days, despite an email from the vendor saying it had been dispatched. I sent them a polite email asking what they were doing about it, and got a few kiss offs, so I sent a rather more direct email, mentioning Paypal payment reversal, and poor feedback. I got an email back with a name to ring, spoke to him nicely and next day another one turned up by registered mail.

Crap post office, but good resolution (after a prompt) by the vendor.

3 CD ELO box set for a tenner - spamcan61
I've carried out the vast majority of my non food or clothing related shopping via the internet for 10 years now, transactions worth from 500 quid to 20p, with very little hassle.

The only eBay transaction that went wrong was for some guitar picks costing £1.69, so that wasn't a major financial issue.

I ordered a 3.5 to 2.5 inch IDE converter PCB from China via eBay, a whole 99p, that didn't turn up, emailed them after a few weeks, replacement turned up in a couple of weeks. Not ideal if you need something in a hurry.

3 CD ELO box set for a tenner - Fenlander
I'm glad you'moved on Iffy... any therapy involved?

Really don't know how we'd manage without our online shopping. Had an Xmas voucher to spend on Amazon and finally got round to browsing for some music concert DVDs (NOELO) around midnight on Monday.

One item new from Amazon, another new from one of their marketplace sellers and finally a used item from a marketplace seller.

Wed am they all arrived in the post tin.... everything in order.

And that is a good representation of the hundreds of online deals we've had (over 650 on ebay alone) over the last few years.

3 CD ELO box set for a tenner - Iffy
...Now let's hope it turns up...

I see the set has now gone up to £11.99.

Mine's not arrived yet.

Nor has an email to say it's been despatched.

(Shuffles off, whistling in an unconcerned manner.)

3 CD ELO box set for a tenner - Iffy
...ELO box set update...

It arrived this morning, and it is the pucker 3CD deluxe edition in a long case, with a book bound between the discs.

Good deal for £9.99, despite the wait.

Last time I looked, they'd put the price up a couple of quid.

Incidentally, it was posted from Jersey, I think stuff from the memorybits site comes from the same place.

Think I read somewhere internet retailers base themselves on the island for tax reasons.

I believe so; 7dayshop, mymemory, play.com and Amazon.co.uk all ship at least some stuff from the channel islands. I think Tesco for one also deliver DVDs etc. from a Jersey subsiduary.

Just checked the address on my last Amazon.co.uk order and it says:-

So shipped from Bedford but registered elsewhere.

Photo paper at Lidl - J Bonington Jagworth
You may have to be quick, as it was last week's offer, but Lidl's A4 and 6x4 photo paper is very reasonable, and works very well in both my Canon and Epson printers. The A4 (10p a sheet) is as good a gloss paper as I have used, and I print a lot of photos.

Lidl have a wireless keyboard and mouse on tomorrow at a penny under 20 notes.

I use a Belkin but I'm going to get one as some of the letters, particularly E.A.S.N have worn off the keys and I get earache from SWM, who can't touch type.
The Belkin has been very good so I'll keep it as backup.

Flaky scalp? Scabby bits? Dandruff?

You can buy Nizoral shampoo at chemists for about £12. It contains ketoconazole, 1%.

Aldi have "anti dandruff" shampoo in stock at £2.50 - it's ketoconazole 2%, which I had ages ago on prescription for flaky spots on the scalp. It works very well indeed. Bargain!

Plastic trays and mini crates. - henry k
For those who are not aware, FREE Plastic trays and mini crates are available from my local independant green grocer and probably one near you..
He tells me the trays are just dumped as there is no recycling capability at the market.

The most common trays are mushroom trays. 16 x 12 x 4 inches. They are OK for light item sand interlock when stacked.

Other small / mini crates are also there for disposal.

The other useful item from him is the boxes that spuds for baking come in. These are very sturdy, can take a reasonable weight and stack well. My daughter has lots in her storage unit.

B&Q - £3 a roll in store. That is a serious subsidy ( from the energy companies).

The software will know (roughly) what colour each scanned pixel of the negative represents in the original scene and will correct the scan accordingly. From personal experience getting an exact colour match can be tricky, but a close match to most negative types should be possible in the software - which needs to know if it is scanning a slide or a negative; this is automatic on some scanners and manual on others.

I have no idea what I actually paid for them, probably the full price but they (not checked if they have given me a discount).

The picture does not do them justice, I don't know how good they sound yet but I suspect they are as good as any 6 metre cable and banana plugs you wouldn't get change out of £30 for in a HIFI shop.

"Splitting" Tickets for train journeys - Perky Penguin
I am sure that many of you may be aware of the savings which can be made by splitting a train journey into parts and buying a ticket for each.

I just looked at a journey from Oakham to Llanbedr (West coast Wales) and came up with the following fares, with a senior rail card - journey involves a change at Birmingham whatever ticket(s) you buy

Oakham To Llanbedr £41.20

Oakham to Birmingham £4.30

Birmingham to Llanbedr £8.60.

Almost a £30 saving and I wouldn't bank on your booking office drawing your attention to the anomaly! I wonder who gets the £30? Any long journey, even one not involving a physical change of trains may be cheaper on split tickets

If not physically changing don't forget that the train has to be one that stops at the station where you swop from one ticket to the next. Only exception to that rule is where one of the tickets is a season and the other is not.

Aha. I had no idea that was an exception, thank you, it makes sense. But then, try persuading a ticket machine to give you a ticket from boundary zone 2... no hope, so it's down to a real person and a queue, so it's not often I manage that one.

I used to shoot missiles at the Jindivik drones that were launched from there, in a past life. Shot one down once too, my missile went for the drone's engine rather than the towed heat source. My sister has lived 3 miles inland from there for 25 years, at the foot of Moelfre mountain. My Father's ashes are scattered up on the mountain, as are my son's, and I shall be there sometime in future too. It's only being so cheerful that keeps me going!
